My number one favorite place in the world is Berlin. You HAVE to spend a lot of time there. And I would definitely not go to LA.. it might be one of the worst cities in California and you'll spend all your money on the dumbest things.

id pick countries to land in that may not be your chosen destinations but are in between or near them and other great countries so in the end you see much more than 15 countries on your trip
for example, from thailand you are in between Cambodia, and Myanmar as well as Laos and Malaysia and its really easy and cheap to travel between them all
from Peru you can get a direct bus down through bolivia (incredible country) to argentina
New Zealand is an island and i know nothing about eastern europe :P
