On a weekend trip in Stratford-on-Avon, during which Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was set to take the stage by The Royal Shakespeare Company, Madeleine McManus and her friends Elise and Richard, who was also celebrating his birthday, walked down an empty street in search for a lively crowd -- at the very least a drink -- in an otherwise barren district in the English countryside. Through the dark, a little bar with few patrons who had just gotten done with a few rounds of their daily pints.
The three walked up to the owner who was locking up his place. They said that they were looking for...

The Royal Palace in Bangkok, Thailand
Leaving home to move to a different country, whether it be for teaching, volunteering, or studying, can be a stressful and sometimes overwhelming endeavor. When the country you're moving to is completely foreign and different than your own, it makes that move even more challenging.
The challenges of becoming an expat are also part of the fun, but it pays to do your research beforehand and learn as much as possible about the culture of the country you're moving to. Thailand, while very much on the tourist trail and with plenty of western amenities and...

What Happens If I Stay?
My roommate Rachel has a hypothesis: People who choose to live abroad are either running away from something or running toward something. I moved to China for the latter reason, searching for freedom, novelty, and a sense of fear and awakening. When I announced that I was planning to live abroad, the responses from family and friends were generally positive: “Yay, you’re trying something new! You’re so brave! It’s going to be such a unique experience..”
Since arriving in China, however, I’ve been bombarded with the constant question (usually with a twinge of guilt) “...

Why Did You Come Here?
Since moving to Australia a few weeks ago, that’s the question on the lips of most people I meet here. I heard the opposite question when I was leaving Philadelphia, my home of nearly a decade, to pursue a life abroad for a year while attempting to make it as a freelance writer and editor: “Why are you leaving?”
Each question obviously has a different answer, but they are related. A basic underlying inquiry in each: why would a 28-year-old who’d already been through the breakup of a major relationship and job layoff in the last 12 months tempt fate some more with such a...

It has been nearly twenty years since I decided to try living in Spain. At the time it was increasingly fashionable: people in Britain were tired of working lives which seemed to promise nothing but continual toil in a country with a high cost of living. Many retired people wanted their place in the sun, away from Britain's rainy shores, and, for young people, Spain seemed to hold the promise of excitement. How have these impressions stood the test of time, and does Spain still hold the same attraction it did twenty years ago?
Undoubtedly much has changed in twenty years. The cost of living...

Tales From the Front – Life in Botswana
These days it’s getting hot. I am melting in my shorts and T-shirt, even inside the house. Everyone tells me it will get worse in the next months to come. Seems like after all, Botswana is a land of extremes. When I first got here, it was freezing. One of the first things I bought was an electric heater to keep me warm during the day because the house was so cold. And the nights were even worse! I wasn’t really prepared for this – this was Africa, right? Where it’s supposed to be warm?
The locals have some interesting opinions when asked about the...
