Huge help in crazy year

Graduating in 2020 and trying to find a job felt like a disaster. My graduate program with a large financial firm was cancelled and hiring had ground to a halt. Luckily, City Internships were able to connect me with an equally impressive firm who I have secured a full-time position with after completing my internship.
I would have fallen far behind my peers without the experience gained through this program. I feel very thnakful that I was able to learn from the teama nd call on them for advice through the process and the internship itself.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would have spoken with the CI team even more. They taught me a lot and were a lot of help when preparing for interviews and with problems or concerns I had during my internship. I'm definitely going to keep in touch during my early career

I haven't stopped talking about this program!

My friends and my younger sister will be going on this program next year because I can't recommend it enough! I had an amazing time interning in New York, made so many friends and was even offered a full-time job by my company (unfortunately I had to return to university). The staff were great with me and really helped the transition to New York. I can't wait to return to the Big Apple!
I interned with a marketing company in a really cool office. I was able to meet lots of clients, go to meetings, work on creative projects and overall learn a lot from the senior team.
The CI events were an added bonus where I could meet up with friends and explore the city some more. We also had one on one sessions for things like resume building and interview preparation

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
New York is a huge, scary city but from day one I felt very comfortable in the CI accommodation. The staff met me and my parents on my first day and were really helpful. Then we had our Welcome Orientation on the second day and after I met everyone else on the program I was completely at home in the city!

Awesome internship in New York

I was really struggling to find a position after graduating from college but City Internships helped me out so much. They set up interviews for me and I had a few companies to choose from in the end. I chose a medium sized company and had a great experience which resulted in a full-time job.
The summer internship was awesome. I learnt a lot, very quickly and met some great people. I have no doubt that it will help me moving forward in my career.
New York is a really fast-paced city but the staff at CI helped us settle in and were always there for us. The accommodation was pretty nice and an easy enough commute. I made good friends with my roommate and we explored the city a lot together.
I have a lot to thank CI for - keep helping students and graduates!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was surprised at how cool my internship was to be honest. I was happy to get an offer but really didn't think that it would go so well. Other people on the program thought the same and it was definitely a nice surprise

Summer Program 2019

I loved my time on the summer program with City Internships! My internship experience has caught the eye of many employers in my city and helped me to land a lot more opportunities. I'm much better prepared for my career as a result of my placement and know what to expect for future jobs. It's been really beneficial to pick up international experience, and I feel far more employable thanks to the workshops and events during the program. It was my first time going abroad and I was nervous to be in a new and intimidating city. The City Internships staff was helpful when I had questions and were always available. They were great at giving advice on things to do and see when I had time away from my internship. The orientation and events were a great added bonus. I even got help with my resume and elevator pitch! It was a very informative and exciting summer. Everyone asks me about my time in London!

What would you improve about this program?
I was also lucky enough to make lots of friends - I just wish that I had stayed a little longer and gone travelling with them after the program as I know that a group went around Europe together. But I've stayed in touch and I can't wait for them to come and visit me next year.

Insightful Internship! Incredible Summer!

I joined City Internships with the intention to try something different and get international exposure. Everything about the program was helpful, from the internship experience to the social events! My experience in the program, especially the internship, will really help me in my career. Before the program, I was limited in my experience. The internship CI helped me acquire will definitely make my resume much more attractive to future employers. There are skills that you can only learn in a hands-on environment, like in an internship. But, don't just focus on your internship, explore ALL the opportunities that CI offers you and attend the seminars! I met many established professionals who could answer my questions. Overall, it was a well-rounded experience with resume workshops and career-orientated seminars!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Network! Relationships really do matter. Pay attention to networking sessions; networking is key! You must focus on relationship-building throughout your internship.

Why did you choose this program?

I had a few different options for a summer abroad, but none totally delivered what I wanted. I was struggling to find an internship, but I also had a desire to spend some time away from home. Originally, combining both of them seemed totally out of reach, but then I found City Internships and was quickly convinced that it was a good route to do both of the things I wanted.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

City Internships were pretty great, actually. There are limits that they can't help with, but they were pretty reasonable - lots of the other interns were from all around the world so we had to sort our own flights. They do accommodation though, which I did take up as I'd never been to London before, and was really glad I did.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

City Internships were really good about the internship placement process, and I learned loads during that, but I think I could have made my life a bit easier if I'd thought more clearly about what I wanted.

Overall I probably had really high expectations but I quickly found in my internship that getting the chance to trade options wasn't going to happen, so that was a steep learning curve that I realize now, had to happen. That's definitely one thing the program gave me, a much more mature perspective.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

The internship was pretty much normal working hours. My host company was pretty flexible but I think it'd vary on who you're with.

Every week there was either a social or a career type seminar, sometimes both. They weren't mandatory, but I quickly made friends by attending them, and loads of the seminar content was new to me.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

I've always enjoyed traveling, so I don't think the prospect of leaving home really bothered me. The scariest part was leaving a structured environment that I was used to from school - essentially being told exactly what to do and where to be, but in reality, the program had enough of that to get help if I needed it, which I rarely did. "Overcoming" that was really just a matter of getting on with things - by the time my first week in my internship ended, I knew the independence in another country was the least of my worries, and focusing on what I was learning was more important.

Any other tips for other prospective travelers?

I would encourage everyone to push themselves into the unexpected! Coming into the program with a really rigid idea of what I wanted to intern in and what skills I need as a result was probably unnecessary. City Internships encouraged flexibility and openness, and I wish I'd listened to that earlier. I loved my internship, and I don't think I would swap it or have any regrets, but at like 21 years old when I did the program, it's clear now that I did not know how to conquer the world, as much as I thought I did - maybe I would have explored a different career or something and City Internships would have been a great way to do that.

So yeah, my lesson learned is to be open-minded and consider everything!

As well as sourcing amazing internship placements for participants, he brings a wealth of international experience and is an invaluable resource for interns in need of career advice. As with everyone at City Internships, Paul also plays a big part in running the social side of the program, putting on events and helping out at careers workshops.

Did YOU intern abroad?! If so, where and what inspired you to go?

Paul: I spent a summer at Disney World, Orlando, Florida on an International College Program whilst at university. It provided me with a unique perspective on international working life and I made many long-lasting friends. The most important thing I took away is that all businesses are built on having solid relationships with both your colleagues and your customers/clients – even for a business as a large as Disney!

What unique qualities does your company possess?

Paul: City Internships is uniquely placed when it comes to graduate internships. With an international team helping students from all around the world to land their dream internships, in many cases their dream jobs, we feel we are in a position to make a very positive contribution to the careers and prospects of those involved.

Paul: My proudest moment at City Internships recurs annually at the end-of-program party. It’s a genuinely fulfilling experience to be able to look around a crowded room and see the friendships that have developed between interns, some of which I know from personal experience will be longstanding.
