Carpe Diem Education - Gap Year Program in Central America

Description:

Carpe Diem gap semester in Central America gives students the opportunity to explore Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica while participating in a variety community service projects and engaging in experiential learning. This program is ideal for those taking a gap year or for current college students.

The trip begins in Guatemala, where students learn about Guatemalan culture while living in a home-stay and spending type with Mayan families. Community service projects include building projects; however students will explore more opportunities throughout their trip. The trip moves to Nicaragua where students live with a local family in the town of San Juan del Sur; the focus of the local community is on healing, arts, and eco-living.

The second half of the trip takes students through Costa Rica, where you have the opportunity to get involved in Turtle conservation efforts by volunteering with an environmental preservation organization. Students also have a week to dictate their own group travel plan in Costa Rica before arriving in Honduras for a week of relaxation on the beach and obtaining Open Water SCUBA Certification.
