If you’re reading this, you are most likely in a position where you are looking to go overseas and live life for a while. Maybe you are already familiar with the ex-pat lifestyle and are simply looking for a new scene or maybe this will be your first time going abroad – either way, might I suggest you seriously consider Taiwan.

In promoting Taiwan I am torn between the pride I have for living in such a fantastic place with the realization that, in many ways, I would prefer Taiwan not be heavily promoted and remain a travel secret for as long as possible. I have come to the conclusion, however, that Taiwan deserves a good dose of positive promotion. Below are my top 5 reasons for considering Taiwan:

1. Charming, friendly people

Undoubtedly the top reason to be in Taiwan. If you’ve ever lived abroad and felt isolated or even unwanted by the local community, you will have no problems interacting with and being welcomed by the Taiwanese.

2. Good food

If you are a fan of Chinese and/or Japanese food, Taiwan is a melting pot of both. Cheap, delicious food is a hallmark of Taiwan and easily accessible from just about every corner.

3. Easy access to hospital/medical care

If you are working in Taiwan, you are entitled to join the national health care plan. Clinics and hospitals are easily accessible and visits to a doctor often only require a small fee. As far as I’m aware, all physicians are required to have a knowledgeable command of English.

4. Easy access to other global hot spots

Have a vacation coming up? Long weekend? Taiwan is conveniently located close to just about every major destination in Asia. Quick getaways to Hong Kong, Tokyo, or the beaches of South East Asia are fairly easy and routine.

5. Relatively high living standard

Time and again I have heard that English teachers, among other professionals are able to live better for less money compared with other Asian locales. Moreover, safety is rarely if ever an issue. When the above are coupled with the fact that mountains, beaches and hot springs are all within 1hour drive (in Taipei – but arguably from any spot in Taiwan) – it is easy to see why so many who have traveled to Taiwan speak highly of it.

I would encourage anyone reading this to add their thoughts (good or bad) in order to give our broader traveling community some useful advice!
