Internship in Shanghai – exceeded all expectations

As a business graduate from Austria, I wanted international experience before starting my career. GAC placed me with a trading company in Shanghai's Pudong district. From day one, I was working on real projects – market research, supplier negotiations, and client presentations. My mentor taught me how Chinese business culture works, which is completely different from Europe. The team handled my visa, found me a great apartment, and checked in weekly. Three months later, I landed a job in international trade back home. My China experience was the main topic in every interview. Worth every euro.

Pros
  • good behaving colleagues
  • great placement
  • support and communication

The best decision after my gap year

After finishing school in Germany, I didn't want to just travel – I wanted to do something meaningful. GAC's gap year program in Beijing was perfect. I interned at a marketing agency, studied Mandarin at BLCU, and explored China on weekends. The team arranged everything – my internship, classes, shared apartment, even weekend trips to the Great Wall and Xi'an. I came back with real work experience, improved Chinese, and job offers. If you're thinking about a gap year, do this and share what you loved.

Pros
  • good behaving colleagues
  • no boss rules
  • yummy food

My daughter grew so much in just 4 weeks

I was nervous sending my 15-year-old daughter to China alone, but GAC made everything safe and easy. Her homestay family sent us photos every day – cooking dumplings, visiting the Great Wall, practicing calligraphy. She went from knowing zero Mandarin to ordering food and making friends with local students. She came back more independent, confident, and with a second family in Beijing. Thank you GAC for an unforgettable summer. it was incredible and I would be more than happy to do it again with Go Abroad China.

Pros
  • visiting the Great Wall
  • practicing calligraphy
  • Her homestay family sent us photos every day

Internship in Shanghai opened doors I didn't know existed

From Sweden to Beijing – best decision I ever made

I studied Mandarin at Peking University for 4 months through GAC. I arrived knowing nothing – not even how to say hello properly. My homestay family was incredibly patient and made me feel like part of their family. My teacher was fantastic, making class both challenging and fun. By month three, I could order food, take taxis, and have real conversations with locals. The GAC team organized weekend trips to the Great Wall and Summer Palace. I came back to Sweden speaking more Chinese than friends who studied for years. Highly recommend.

Pros
  • Fast support and supportive team

Go Abroad China

Why did you choose this program?

I had to go abroad as per university course requirements. I first started my research and involved my career advisor who is also on campus, and helped a lot with finalizing the formalities of going abroad from my school.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Go Abroad China did manage to give me all the important things: getting my study visa didn't present any problems, I got picked up at the airport in Shanghai since it was my first time there anyway. I think the weekend activities can be even more organized.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

Not to be scared and enjoy China because once you are there and studying everyday, time tends to go by very quickly. Within no time you will realize you are already preparing to go back to your original school after the summer holidays.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

I had around 20 hours of class time per week, which was definitely a lot since I went to summer school and expected it to be a little less strict. But actually, it was fine in the end and I had a blast learning Chinese with 20 something other classmates from a lot of different countries.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it and/or how did your views on the issue change?

Going to China for the first time was of course something I really thought about and got nervous about, but strangely enough I wasn't shocked as I had predicted. I was worried about life since I didn't speak Chinese, but actually Shanghai is so modern, the Chinese there speak English.

What is your favorite memory from your time abroad?

Being in Shanghai and learning about the city, its hang outs, history, new locations and other little nooks in the city with new friends was a great experience for me.

What is your favorite travel memory?

One of my favorite travel memories was exploring Beijing’s historic hutongs while meeting local families who welcomed me with tea and stories about their traditions. It reminded me that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people and cultures on a personal level. That experience gave me a deeper appreciation for the kind of cultural immersion we provide at Go Abroad China. Just like I felt welcomed and enriched, I want every student who joins our programs to leave China with unforgettable memories, lifelong friendships, and a stronger sense of the world beyond their comfort zone.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Working with Go Abroad China has transformed the way I see education and global careers. I’ve grown more aware of how meaningful international experiences can be in shaping young people’s futures. I’ve developed stronger communication skills by interacting with students from different backgrounds, and I’ve learned the importance of tailoring opportunities to match individual goals. On a personal level, I’ve become more patient, adaptable, and culturally aware, qualities that I believe are essential in today’s interconnected world. Every time I help a student take their first step abroad, I’m reminded of the impact this work has, and that motivates me to continue growing professionally and personally.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

One of the most inspiring stories I heard was from a student who joined our internship program with little confidence in her skills. She was placed at a Fortune 500 company in Shanghai, and at first, she was nervous about meeting expectations. But with support from her mentor and colleagues, she grew into her role, contributed to major projects, and even received a full-time job offer after graduation. When she shared her story, she said that the experience completely changed her career path and gave her the confidence she never thought she had. Stories like hers show the real impact of our programs—not just on resumes, but on personal growth and self-belief.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

If I could join one of our programs, I would choose the Chinese Language Immersion Program combined with a homestay experience. For me, language is a gateway to understanding culture on a deeper level. While internships give valuable professional skills, living with a host family and learning Mandarin directly from daily life allows for a unique cultural connection. It’s an opportunity to not only improve language fluency but also gain insight into traditions, values, and perspectives that shape modern China. Personally, I think this program best represents the heart of Go Abroad China—authentic cultural immersion, meaningful connections, and lifelong learning.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

What makes Go Abroad China unique is the way we combine professional development with cultural immersion. We don’t just place students in internships—we make sure they are supported with mentoring, accommodation, language training, and community activities. I was especially proud of our team when we continued supporting students virtually during challenging times, ensuring that they still had access to meaningful internships and learning opportunities despite global restrictions. That adaptability and dedication showed me that our team is deeply committed to student success, no matter the circumstances. We truly care about creating transformative experiences, and I believe that’s what sets us apart from others in the field.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I believe the biggest factor in being a successful company is trust—both with partners and students. Students and parents need to know that we will deliver a safe, reliable, and valuable experience. Companies need to trust that we provide them with motivated interns who are ready to learn. Building that trust requires transparency, consistency, and genuine care for people. At Go Abroad China, we’ve built long-term relationships with Fortune 500 companies, startups, and universities worldwide because of this principle. Success doesn’t come overnight; it comes from years of proving our commitment to quality, student satisfaction, and cultural exchange. Trust, in my opinion, is the foundation of everything we do.
