Internship in Spain

My internship abroad has been the best experience and opportunity! The Intern Group has made it so easy and fun. I felt supported through the entire journey. Would definitely recommend! Also having roommates who are also doing internships has made it so much easier. We did a lot together and really created strong bonds. The Intern Group also made an effort in planning social events with all fellow interns and we got a chance to meet and get to know everyone. The housing was also super neat and had everything we needed.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I definitely would stay longer than 3 months!

Outstanding Experience with InternGroup

My experience with InternGroup has been more than just an internship opportunity—it has been a meaningful step in my personal and professional growth. From the very beginning, their team made me feel supported, welcomed, and confident about the journey ahead. The process was smooth, well-organized, and they were always ready to answer my questions and guide me whenever I needed help.

What I appreciated most was how they genuinely cared about creating a valuable experience, not just placing interns somewhere. Through this journey, I gained new skills, learned how to adapt in a professional environment, and became more confident in myself and my abilities.

InternGroup gave me the chance to grow beyond academics and see what I’m capable of in the real world. It’s an experience I’ll always be grateful for, and I would sincerely recommend it to anyone who wants to challenge themselves, grow professionally, and create memories that last a lifetime.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment for me was taking my very first international flight alone. I had never traveled that far by myself before, so everything felt exciting but also overwhelming—navigating the airport, going through immigration, and arriving in a completely new country.

But once I landed in Spain, that fear quickly turned into confidence. This internship didn’t just fly me to Spain—it opened a whole new world for me. It gave me the courage and opportunity to solo travel to other European countries during the program, something I never imagined I could do before. What started as my most nerve-racking moment became one of the most empowering experiences of my life.

Civil Engineering Internship in Madrid

My 10 week program was an absolutely life-changing time of my life. Before choosing this program, I wanted a whole cultural experience, I wanted something new and I wanted to see a different side of the world. I had no expectations of what I was going to experience in Spain; I knew nothing about it, I didn't know how to speak Spanish, and I knew nobody going into it; and yet I can say this was the most life-changing experience I have had.

I was placed with INES Ingenieros Consultores, a fascinating engineering consultancy with a specialisation in transport infrastructure and restoring built heritage. I was tasked to assist them with flood modelling for 4 different regions around Spain. The country is quite known for their flooding from its mountainous geography so it was quite fascinating to see the focus on construction and infrastructure assets. The company also showed me the different projects they worked on and different contracts they have with clients regarding asset management, consulting, and design services which was very insightful. My co-workers were very friendly and advised me a few times with their day-to-day lives and general travelling around Spain. My mentor was very smart and experienced in his field and I learnt a lot from his teachings. Overall the work was a 10/10 experience, it's a vast contrast to the work I've experienced in Australia and I feel quite accomplished having done this internship. I felt motivated most days to come into work and learn from the opportunities they provided me with.

From visiting the historical villages and getting to know different people from various backgrounds, this program was an absolute pleasure for organising events to meet other interns and see the main parts of Madrid. The organisers were extremely helpful and provided valuable insights with travelling. I've made lifelong global friends with this program with different backgrounds, and absolutely want to visit their home countries. I was very happy with the hospitality provided by this program.

In terms of Spain itself, it was an absolutely insightful experience to travel around the country. Weekends were an opportunity to explore different cities around Spain, to see its unique landscapes and explore the night-life of Madrid. Madrid is quite famous for its night-life, and its no disappointment; the streets felt safe, the music and culture is lively, and I'm quite happy to have seen this. For an adventurous and outdoorsy person, Spain is definitely on top of the list to visit. Hiking is plentiful and quite rewarding in this country. From the famous Picos de Europa, Pyrenees Mountains on the French border, and even mountains just one hour north of Madrid; just the experiences were absolute eye gazing moments. The landscapes were lively and the animal-life was abundant even during the late-winter/early-spring season. For a historical and cultural person, everywhere in Spain is abundant with life and heritage. Stone structures are preserved throughout time, religion is a big part of Spain, and the food is most Spanish the further away from the city you go (from my experience at least).

Overall, this solo adventure will forever be a big part of me and will sit deep in my heart. A huge thank you to The Intern Group Madrid Team for giving me this opportunity, for organising housing, events, and the internship itself; I will be forever grateful for the memories I've made on this journey and I will always want to return. It is such a lively country, suitable for almost everyone, and there will always be something to do in Spain.

Hasta luego, España!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Do not be scared to travel alone. It's daunting at times to go to new places and meet new people, especially when you don't speak the same language. But it's these experiences that make it what its worth.
Pros
  • Abundant culture and history
  • Scenic landscapes
  • Lively nights
Cons
  • Not enough weekend trips within my 10 week program, if only I could have more weekends.
  • Not enough sleep, always something to do every night.
  • Too much to see, not enough time to see everything.

NGO Internship in Tokyo

The internship I completed in Tokyo was fantastic! Thanks to the Intern Group and all their support and provisions, I was able to undertake an engaging and fulfilling internship within one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in the world. The Intern Group were extremely skilled at analysing my resume, as based on my strengths, they suitably paired me with the NGO Seibo Japan, where I was able to grow and develop my skills and interests in marketing and fundraising. I would highly recommend taking part in an Internship with The Intern Group, and I can't wait until I return to Japan!

Response from The Intern Group

Thank you for sharing your experience, Grace! We’re so glad you enjoyed your time in Tokyo and that your internship with Seibo Japan was such a great fit. We’re wishing you all the best for your future!

Best experience ever

My internship program in Madrid was in experience I’ll never forget. I wish I could do this 100 times. My program was amazing, accommodation was great, everyone at my internship was so kind and supportive, and the social scene was incredible. My program leaders, Corrine and Lalita were so helpful and kind. I met so many new awesome people who I will stay friends with after the program is over. This was genuinely the best experience I’ve ever had the opportunity to be a part of and I would recommend it to anyone!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
if I could do one thing differently it would be to go on every excursion included in my program. I wasn’t able to attend them but it would’ve been lovely to explore more of Spain
Pros
  • Social life
  • The city has everything
  • This program was so supportive with all our needs and questions
Cons
  • Being exhausted

Alumni Interviews

These are in-depth Q&A sessions with verified alumni.

Why did you choose this program?

I graduated in July 2018 and I wanted to gain experience while traveling. Asia is quite strong in the industry I will one day be working for, so this program was an amazing opportunity. The intern group offers lots of destinations and their website is well organized. It was easy to apply and I got a reply the day after. Each program is based on the city you pick and they offer to get you an internship whatever your field is. They’re friendly and for any extra questions, you can contact them by email or Skype.

What did your program provider assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Being an internship program, the agency helped me with finding an internship role in my career field, an accommodation and they kept in contact with me throughout the whole interview process.

Although I had to sort out the visa myself, they helped me figure out how to fill in the visa application, what kind of visa I needed and what documents I needed in order to apply.

The program includes activities such as trips around near cities, dinners together, Chinese/ language classes, mainstream tourists activities haha and you will be sharing all these adventures with all the other interns too so you are literally never alone.

The guys from the agency here in Shanghai love to organize extra dinners or cinema nights with us as extra activities just to keep in touch with us, which is appreciated by all of us, interns.

I had to sort out my own flight, but as soon as you’re done with that they will organize a taxi ride from the airport to the hotel and vice versa for your departure back home so you don’t have to worry about missing your flights/ finding your accommodation. You get a SIM card organized as well with credit for the first month and a metro card with credit for the first month as well.

In the welcome pack, there’s a bunch of apps they recommend to download.

They won’t tell you to get a VPN, but your workplace probably will.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

The agency explains everything you need to know, they tell you which apps are blocked in China, they organize a language class / cultural class in your first weekend so that if you have questions on how to behave in China you can get answers and tips.

I probably just wished I knew how cool and fashionable people are here.

The only piece of advice is to get a good VPN; even Google is blocked and, trust me, you don’t want to have to research stuff in Chinese on Baidu (well, unless you speak the language).

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

I wake up, quick breakfast and then I go to work until 6:30pm, then I usually meet up with few internships to have dinner and a walk around the city, Tianzifang by night is absolutely gorgeous.

We go on an adventure on Saturdays and Sundays. Shanghai is massive and visiting all of it can take quite the time.

Saturday nights we usually go clubbing (and clubbing in Shanghai is an experience as well, haha). It’s great for foreigners and the agency knows few PR’s us interns can ask for deals and free entry clubs.

There are lots to do so we always try to organize things together, but going on exploration alone is something I always do, so some Sundays I just wander by myself.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Personally, I am used to travel to other countries.

I have never been outside Europe before, though, so I didn’t know what to expect. You know, you can read about things and try to imagine, but it is never how you expect it to be so I just let it happen.

I had no fear. I got told that Shanghai is an international and strong city and I just went with it.
It’s a rich city and, although poverty is a reality here as well, I got to realize how safe Shanghai is.
Maybe the only big question in my mind was “what if I don’t like it?”.

Well, guys, at the end it’s only a short amount of time and it’s all experience gained. You might have to stand some behaviors and you have to be understanding of another culture, so it might go against your beliefs and point of views, but traveling is all about adapting and understanding.

Luckily, it’s not my case. Shanghai is amazing and I love the people, the food, everything! It’s a real shame I will have to go back to normal life soon.

I totally recommend visiting Shanghai.

What's your advice to other travelers?

Don’t be afraid to travel. It’s an eye-opening experience and the most interesting people I got to meet were all travelers.

I am from Italy, but I moved to the UK about 6 years ago and I have traveled to Germany a few times and France and places, haha. You get to realize things, seeing the world from different prospectives helps you to understand. I’m glad I went to China, I had no clue what a beautiful place it is and what a culture!

Hopefully, I will be able to explore Japan and South Korea soon too, with all the other countries here in Asia. You’re never too young or too old to visit new places. Mixing an internship experience with traveling was a great idea and not only it looks good on your CV, but it really does improve who you are as a person.

What is your favorite travel memory?

One unforgettable memory from my Europe trip was visiting Prague's Alchemy Museum. In those dimly lit underground rooms, I saw real 17th-century potions and elixirs. A local guide shared fascinating stories of forbidden experiments and hidden mysteries, sparking lively chats with fellow travelers from different countries, all mesmerized by this living piece of history. It was simply incredible! A true immersion into the magical, enigmatic world of medieval alchemy that made me reflect on how the past still inspires our curiosity today. Of course, I couldn't resist buying some elixirs of long life as a special souvenir for my parents, who loved the story behind them!

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Since joining The Intern Group, I've really grown into this people-first focus, thanks to the amazing teamwork! Everyone's so passionate about helping people tap into their full potential, from the candidates we guide to our own colleagues. It's sharpened my coaching in a fun way, turning their doubts into global adventures. I've found real purpose here watching those transformations happen every day.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

There are many amazing stories, so it is very hard to pick one. We hear stories of people who moved with a job offer to the country they were interning, people who achieved incredible opportunities through networking with our alumni community just a couple of months after interning, and also stories of people who met their best friends or significant other because of this opportunity.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I would love to join our Tokyo program! There are so many amazing places to explore and such a unique culture to experience! I also love japanese food, so being able to try the traditional cuisine would be incredible for me! Besides that, working in Japan would teach me more about subtle communication styles.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

We're the leading provider of international internships, where our passionate team loves helping people grow by guiding them through every step of their internship journey. We are all very passionate about cultures, travel, languages, and people in general, making us deeply people-oriented and always ready to truly care for and understand our applicants needs.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I believe the biggest factor is a people-first culture that genuinely invests in everyone's growth, both team members and clients alike. At The Intern Group, this shines through our shared passion for guiding interns on transformative journeys while supporting each other's development daily. It builds loyalty, sparks innovation, and turns challenges into triumphs, creating a thriving environment where everyone is aiming to reach their full potential.
