What are the jobs like:

English teaching jobs are typically at private language institutes with students paying private tuition to learn a language by a native English speaker in a 100% English immersion classroom (you don't need to speak another language). Your English language students are typically adults in Europe and Latin America and either children or adults in Asia and the Middle East.

Your day at work: You typically teach 5 classes a day for 45-50 minutes, 5 days a week. There are anywhere from 5 to 50 English teachers at each language school so you will have lots of new friends to make. Most cities will have anywhere from 500 to 5000 other English teachers like you.

Wages: Most industrialized countries you get paid a middle class wage to support yourself, pay your bills and break even (just like teachers in America), many Asian countries teachers can save 30-50% more than the cost of living which can be up to an extra $ 12,000 to $ 15,000 in a year!

Popular Countries to Teach English with a TEFL TESOL Certification:

Fantastic, trusted program to teach abroad

My review is based on my experience signing up through the Chicago office and then doing the program in Barcelona.

I strongly recommend the TEFL training. I had an amazing experience - the course is demanding and challenging which ensures that you are well-prepared to begin teaching as soon as you complete the program.

The trainers, Stephen and Kerry, are absolutely experts in their delivery of the material, but more importantly, in the way that in just 4 weeks they are able to mold you into the teacher you hoped you would be. I greatly respect Stephen and Kerry, they are highly qualified for their positions and will give you the best training possible.

I really like that the program is smaller than the big TEFL companies because the trainers are able to provide a more personalized approach and take the time to meet one on one with the students and address all types of concerns - professional ones and personal ones too.

Practice teaching was a great experience as there are small group classes that you get to teach while Stephen or Kerry observes and steps in if necessary. Leading up to the class, Stephen and Kerry take you through every step of the planning to make the class as successful as possible. You are then provided with immediate feedback following the class and it is always constructive and useful, giving you a goal for the next time you teach.

I taught in the U.S. for more than 10 years and definitely came into the experience thinking that I could just breeze through it - that wasn't the case. I say that so that potential students are aware that you have to work really hard, but if you're willing to do so and want to learn from the best, then this program is definitely the place for you.

And as an added bonus you have the awesome location of being two blocks from Sagrada Familia.

TEFL Academy Online Course

This course has covered many areas in which I have struggled during my own experiences tutoring English in the past. The staff has been extremely helpful along the way and I believe that after completing the 20 hours of classroom practicum I will be knowledgeable in many different techniques of teaching.

Online TEFL Certification through ITEFL Academy

I took the Online Course from the International TEFL Academy. I researched numerous programs and found that the ITEFL Academy was the most affordable, organized and accredited. The course was exactly what I expected; challenging at times and covered a broad span of topics. If your heart is truly not committed to teaching English, then the course would have been extremely difficult and time consuming for you. Otherwise, if you are a student eager to go abroad, everything flowed smoothly. The staff was and has been extremely helpful. I have graduated months ago and am still in contact with my adviser, emailing her laundry lists of questions and scheduling phone appointments as well. They are extremely helpful post-graduation which is just as important for them guiding you through the course.

Got my money's worth

My experience with ITA was mostly very positive. After much research on other programs and several Q&As with my helpful and knowledgeable admissions advisor, I enrolled in the online course in early 2011. I feel that I got my money's worth.

The curriculum left a bit to be desired. I found several typos and thought most of the assignments could be more challenging; but overall, I would recommend the program. The staff seemed very willing to review and update the curriculum.

The employment resources that they provided also needed to be updated. After receiving my certificate, I used their directory of international schools to search for employment in S. America. I sent resumes to one country and nearly all the email addresses listed were incorrect, as they bounced back to me. Perhaps the listings have been updated since then, though... Ask!

I also greatly appreciated the instructor's willingness to hold online office hours for any questions on a regular basis, as well as the requirement to review peers' homework submissions. It was very interesting and valuable to see how others interpreted the assignments and to learn from their ideas.

I really appreciated the practicum, as it was lengthier than other TEFL/TESOL programs that I researched. I feel that I got a lot of experiential education that enhanced what I learned online. I also simply enjoyed teaching and observing the students!

Alumni Interviews

Meet Jonas Van Weerst, International TEFL Academy-Online TEFL Course alum

GO: Why did you decide to pursue teaching abroad?

Jonas: In Belgium I am a teacher (not English) so I realized that I have good qualifications for teaching abroad, but I didn't have the TEFL certificate yet. Realizing that I have good qualifications and being fed up with with only losing money during travels, are the main reasons to pursue teaching abroad.

GO: Why did you decide to get TEFL certified through International TEFL academy?

Jonas: At that time, I was living in Berlin and I didn't have much money. So the online course suited me perfectly because it was the cheapest option. Also important for me was the first personal contact with International TEFL Academy's contact person, John Bentley. He was very supportive and gave me a professional impression of International TEFL Academy.

GO: From what you have experienced abroad, how will your TEFL certificate help you?

Jonas: I am not a native English speaker. What I did learn, is that when you aren't a native English speaker, the TEFL certificate is quite important. I'm guessing that a lot of schools reason that when one has the certificate, he or she is skilled enough to teach English.

Meet Samantha Efrusy, International TEFL Academy - Online Course alum

GO: Why did you choose the International TEFL Academy?

Samantha: I decided to get my TEFL certification through the International TEFL Academy because there was an office very close to me in Chicago and the online classes were convenient. The people there were very helpful and friendly.

GO: How did the course prepare you for teaching abroad?

Samantha: The classes taught me how to handle some situations, but to be honest I've learned much more through experience. I teach both children and adults and both are do different so I am happy I took the extra young learned and business professional TEFL classes.

GO: Describe your day to day activities as a teacher?

Samantha: I currently teach a preschool and kindergarten class at a Montessori school in Coban, Guatemala. I have a Spanish teaching assistant but I am in charge of lesson plans and most of the teaching. I have 12 students between the age of 4 and 6. In the evenings I teach intermediate and upper intermediate adults. I have 1-2 classes every night. I also host a conversation corner for adults. All levels can come in and I have conversation topics or activities for them to participate in. I am working full time and I am very busy. My only day off is Sunday.

GO: How has this experience impacted your future?

Samantha: As for my future, I know I want to teach and travel for a few years, but I do not see this as a permanent occupation. I still plan on going to medical school at some point. I tend not to plan too far ahead, so anything can happen!! I do love Coban and I may stay here for a couple years.

GO: What is one piece of advice you would give to those thinking about pursuing a TEFL certificate?

Samantha: As for my future, I know I want to teach and travel for a few years, but I do not see this as a permanent occupation. I still plan on going to medical school at some point. I tend not to plan too far ahead, so anything can happen!! I do love Coban and I may stay here for a couple years.
