Why did you decide to intern abroad with Adelante in Barcelona?

Rob: I wanted to experience life in another culture whilst gaining valuable work experience that will help me professionally in the future. I chose Adelante for my work placement because they have internships in a range of different companies and industries, and everything is arranged beforehand, including accommodation. Everything was well structured and I spoke on the phone for around 2 hours with someone from Adelante, this reassured me about making my first independent trip abroad.

What made this internship experience unique and special?

Rob: Everything about the whole experience is exactly as described. The accommodation I stayed in (with a host family- a lady called Luisa) was excellent and in the heart of Barcelona. The 2-week intensive language course at the start of the programme was in a fantastic language school and this prepared me really well for the internship. It is also a chance to become accustomed to the city and meet other people from different countries, before the work placement begins. This is not provided with many other internships where you may be thrust straight into work. The internship was well located and in a good company, again as described, although it could of been more challenging.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Rob: It is definitely both a personal and professional investment in yourself. Having international work experience is a big bonus for potential employers, it can set you apart from other people for many reasons, including the strength of character it shows. The opportunity to live independently in a new culture really allows you to grow as a person and I have benefited hugely from this. I'm now working in a Spanish school, and I don't think this would of happened without Adelante! It opens so many doors, whether looking to work abroad or heading back to your home country.

What is one piece of advice you would offer someone considering interning abroad in Barcelona?

Rob: Get involved. When you first arrive there will be things that you are not used but this is part of the experience! Be positive, embrace the culture and you will be doing things you never thought you would do in no time...Catalan people are friendly!

What is your favorite travel memory?

One of my favorite travel memories was a trip to Bali, Indonesia, where I immersed myself in the island’s rich food, art, and culture.

In Ubud, I wandered through vibrant markets and galleries, captivated by the intricate wood carvings and colorful paintings that tell Bali’s stories. I savored every bite of local dishes like nasi campur, a flavorful mix of rice, meats, and vegetables, and babi guling, the smoky, melt-in-your-mouth suckling pig.

I also visited temples like Tanah Lot and Uluwatu, where the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful surroundings left a lasting impression. I took part in a traditional offerings ceremony, learning about the spiritual significance behind the daily rituals.

Bali’s culture, art, and cuisine came together to create an unforgettable experience—one that left me with a deeper sense of connection to the island and its people.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Since working at Adelante Abroad, I've experienced significant personal and professional growth. One of the most profound ways I've changed is in how I view the importance of experiencing different cultures and countries. Being part of a company that facilitates global education and cultural exchange has deepened my understanding of the transformative power of travel.

I've come to appreciate how immersing oneself in new environments fosters empathy, broadens perspectives, and enhances personal growth. Working closely with students and seeing them embark on life-changing experiences has reinforced my belief in the value of stepping outside one's comfort zone and embracing the unfamiliar. This role has not only allowed me to contribute to others' journeys but has also inspired me to continue exploring the world and embracing the rich diversity it has to offer.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

One of the best stories I’ve heard from a return student comes from a young woman who participated in our internship program in Oaxaca, Mexico. During her art internship, she truly excelled, impressing her mentors with her creativity and dedication. As a result, she was offered the incredible opportunity to create murals that will remain in the community for years to come—such a lasting and meaningful legacy!

Beyond her artistic achievements, she also made incredible strides in her Spanish language skills, immersing herself in the local culture and improving her fluency. The experience helped her grow both personally and professionally, building her confidence and expanding her career opportunities. It was truly inspiring to hear how her time abroad shaped her in so many positive ways, and it’s stories like hers that remind me of the profound impact these experiences can have on our students.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

If I could choose any program that our company offers, I would definitely choose the Scotland Golf Program. As a big fan of the sport, I’ve always been fascinated by its history, and Scotland is where golf truly began. I’d love the opportunity to visit iconic courses like St. Andrews, and experience firsthand the beautiful landscapes and rich golfing heritage that make Scotland a golfer’s paradise. It would be a dream come true to play where the sport originated, while also immersing myself in the culture and traditions of such a historic location.

I was especially proud of our team during a particularly busy season when we managed to successfully place all our students in meaningful internships and housing arrangements despite numerous logistical challenges. I believe the biggest factor in being a successful company, especially in the context of encouraging new experiences, is fostering a strong sense of curiosity and openness to growth.
