Experience in Barcelona

Spending time in Barcelona has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. From the very beginning, everything was well-aligned to make my stay comfortable, productive, and memorable. My housing was conveniently located just a short walk away from both my internship placement and my Spanish language school, which made my daily routine smooth and stress-free. Not having to commute long distances gave me more time and energy to fully engage with everything the city had to offer.

My internship experience was particularly impactful. I was placed in a professional and welcoming environment where I was given real responsibilities, not just busywork. I felt like a valued part of the team, and I learned so much about the industry, local work culture, and how to collaborate across languages and cultures. It was challenging in the best way—pushing me to grow both professionally and personally.

In addition to my internship, I took Spanish classes which were incredibly helpful. The teachers were engaging and patient, and the classes were well-structured to improve both conversational and grammatical skills. Being immersed in the language every day also helped reinforce what I was learning in class.

One of the unexpected highlights of my time in Barcelona was the people I met. I made great friends from all over the world—some through my internship, others at the language school, and many more through social events in the city. Barcelona has such an international, vibrant feel that it was easy to connect with people who were also here to learn, work, and explore.

All in all, my time in Barcelona was a perfect blend of professional development, language learning, and cultural immersion. I came here hoping to gain experience and improve my Spanish, but I left with so much more—new friends, unforgettable memories, and a deeper appreciation for the city and its people.

The best summer ever

I spent the summer in Barcelona shadowing psychologists at an assisted living residence. My coworkers were kind and helpful, and the patients were charming and sweet. The local program advisor was very helpful to me and my friends in the program anytime we needed anything. I also completed 2 weeks of Spanish classes prior to my internship. My Spanish improved tremendously, as did my professional skills. I feel that this program exceeded my expectations and helped to prepare me for a career in psychology. In addition to this, Barcelona was just an incredible city with so much life and character--I never ran out of things to do or places to see.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment was the first day of Spanish classes. I did not know anyone, or how the classes were going to work, or if my Spanish was going to be as good as everyone else's. I overcame it by realizing that all of the other students starting that day were in the same boat as me, so I started talking to some of them. The students I met and talked to that day ended up becoming my closest friendships of the trip. Also, the teachers and staff are there to help, so I had to learn to not be afraid to ask questions!

I had a wonderful experience!

My internship did not correlate with my actual career. I am pursuing Medicine, but interned in an Art Gallery. I have always had a passion for art. I had a couple of jobs here and there for art, but nothing serious. I chose, alongside the help of Adelante Staff, to intern in Art to broaden my resume. To also get a chance to do what I love before fully pursuing my medical career. I had a wonderful time. I met some of the best people, both in the language school and my placement. I would recommend Adelante Abroad. Broaden your knowledge and enjoy life!

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moments, were always when I went out with my coworkers or friends. We always would laugh our heads off watching each other dance like crazy.
Pros
  • Gain overall knowledge
  • Make new connections
  • Buil resume
Cons
  • Weather may surprise you
  • Can miss family and friends depending on length of stay
  • Can be a little lonely if solo traveling

Did not gain any experience!

I did a language assistant internship in Barcelona and hardly gained any valuable teaching experience at all. I thought I would be learning how to plan and organise lessons and help out more during class with the kids. Thinking this would lead to teaching English in the future. This was not the case at all. Especially for the price I paid, I would not recommended this to anyone wanting to learn more / gain experience in a language school. The social media was not helpful either. Hardly any recent people posting or communicating there. It wasn’t a community.

Response from Adelante Abroad

Dear Rolene, we received notification of your review below and were surprised for two main reasons: 1) your program ended 7 months ago and 2) we sent you checking-in emails regularly during your Program, and to each, your responses were incredibly positive (including happy face emojis!) So, I am going to respond here to your apparent dissatisfaction which we are just now learning about: you participated in a short, 6 – week summer internship with us last year and your Spanish level was Beginner / no Spanish. You wanted to do a Fashion internship or Marketing which, per our website and what we communicated to you, is not possible without at least some Spanish. Since you really wanted to get abroad, you opted to do the only option available for our Beginner speakers, which is Teaching English. We were VERY clear that you would not be in a school setting with children, as we not do any kind of deep background check on our candidates, rather you would be working at a private language institute mostly with adults, teaching them English. We offered to also try and include some Marketing duties as that was one of your original internship sector requests, which was an extra effort on our part and to which, again, you responded positively the various times we checked in with you about that. Everything you signed up for and paid for, you received with us in Barcelona, plus some add-ons, and all in a timely and professional manner. Our experiential programs abroad are some of the most economical which is possible to see in a few minutes of comparing programs and why candidates sign up with us. Again, this review does come as a shock to us given all the positive communication you gave us during your time abroad.

Barcelona, Spain Physical Therapy Internship

I was placed in Barcelona, Spain for an internship in Physical Therapy for three months (Feb - Apr). I was hoping for a clinical placement, much like a typical Physical Therapy clinic in the US. However, I was placed with a Soccer team and was doing stuff that is more similar to what an Athletic trainer would do in the US. Despite not getting the placement that I wanted, the Spanish classes that I took at Kingsbrook were extremely well done and my host family was exceptional. I would recommend!

Pros
  • Friendly and helpful staff
  • Excellent host family, friends, and people I met
  • Improved Spanish speaking ability
Cons
  • Poor placement within Physical Therapy
  • A bit disorganized upon my arrival; I stayed with a different host family my first three days.

International Teaching Assistant

I loved this internship & the program was amazing for the price. Although, I did have 1 big issue with the program. I was never told that housing could be co-ed. When I was informed on who my roommates would be, I was told it was 2 females. When arriving there was a male living there and the program coordinator told me there was nothing he could do and that I should’ve asked for female only living, when I never knew that was something I would have to clarify. Besides this I loved Barcelona & my internship placement

Pros
  • Increasing Cultural Competence
  • Improving Spanish
  • Resume Builder
Cons
  • Adjusting to life abroad
  • Housing issues
  • Locals disliking foreigners

Hi Anneka, thanks so much for taking the time to leave a Review and we are ever happy that you loved our long-running Intern in Barcelona program! Our housing, in all cities worldwide, is always, default, going to be co-ed. Primarily because our Programs begin the first Monday of every month, so even if for one month a housing may be one gender, by the following month it could easily be co-ed as new participants arrive each month / each new start date. If a candidate wants only one gender that does need to be requested and we do our best to accommodate. When you and your friend, another Adelante candidate, arrived into your apartment and understood it was co-ed, it would have been good to hear from you that you wanted to change housing! Even with an intense housing shortage in Barcelona right now, we could have tried to move you both. Many apologies for the mis- understanding! Good luck in ALL future endeavors, with your new, upgraded resume, solid Spanish speaking skills and life-long Barcelona memories:) Team Adelante

A Unique Experience

I traveled from Canada all the way to Barcelona to do a 3 month social media internship and this was definitely something I will never forget. I've made a lot of memories, mostly good, some tough. My internship placement was exactly what I was hoping for, but unfortunately, there was a lot of disorganization within the spanish supervisor team as I had to move accommodations 3 times with little notice.
My work also allowed me 3 days to travel so during my internship, I got to visit 3 different countries and the plane tickets and train rides are extremely cheap!
But overall, i would do it again in a heartbeat, minus the bad accommodation ;)

Pros
  • Everything is closeby
  • Internship placement was what I was expecting
Cons
  • Staff disorganization
  • Can be very stressful if you can't adjust to new environments easily

Response from Adelante Abroad

Hola Alesia and thank you again for taking the time to Review your Intern Abroad program with us. I am so pleased that you loved the program. I apologize for the housing changes! We know one of them was to live with a friend of yours for a bit, and one was our fault. The housing situation in Barcelona, specifically this year, and definitely this summer, has been incredibly turbulent. Pricing for accommodations is up over 200% in many student and long term rentals and we strive NOT to raise our prices based on what we hope is temporary. This commitment has lead to several last minute housing changes as owners vying for higher rents are unafraid to lose good partners, while they attempt to recoup losses left over from massive vacancies during the pandemic. I am truly sorry you felt that acutely and hope it didn't diminish too much from the rest of your program with us. Good luck in all future endeavors and thank you again - Team Adelante

I had an amazing time studying abroad!

During my time studying in Spain, I was able to not only gain relevant work experience in my field, but also connect and make friends with people from all parts of the world, put my Spanish skills to the test and grow as a person. I highly recommend everyone to take the chance and go out of their comfort zone by studying or working abroad. You will learn so many new things not only about yourself, but also about different cultures. I would have to say my favorite part was meeting all these new people who will be my friends for many years to come.

Pros
  • Practice a second language
  • Gain work experience
  • Learn about new cultures
Cons
  • Lower living conditions
  • Sometimes hard to find a job placement in specific fields
