Why did you decide to volunteer with Love Volunteers in Tanzania?

Tanzania kids

Amanda: I have always wanted to volunteer in Africa and when I was researching volunteer companies Love Volunteers jumped out at me as having the same beliefs I had about volunteering . It is run by past volunteers, is not for profit meaning the fees you pay go to the people in your placement community. Love Volunteers were friendly and helped me decide where I wanted to go based on what I wanted to get out of my trip and stayed in touch while I was away making sure everything was ok.

Describe your day to day activities as a volunteer.

Amanda: While I was in Tanzania a usual day involved breakfast, lunch and dinner at my host families house. At the orphanage for the morning were we would teach lessons, play with the kids, help with laundry, lunch and dishes. After lunch we had a bit of down time, as the kids had a nap, where you could explore the local area or head to the nearest internet cafe to get in touch with family and friends. In the afternoon we would head back to the Orphanage to play with the kids and help with dinner and then put all the kids to bed. On weekends you could stay at the orphanage and play with the kids or head off to do some sight seeing and touristy activities like the Massai market or visiting the national parks.

What made this experience unique and special?

Tanzania orphanage

Amanda: Volunteering in Tanzania was unique because of the flexibility in the programs, During my stay there I was able to help at the Orphanage, school, daycare and widows programme. Being a volunteer rather than a tourist you become part of a family and community and build amazing relationships. The kids I volunteered with also made my trip special, they are so happy and love having you there to teach or play.

How has this experience impacted your future?

Amanda: My trip to Africa has changed the way I see and feel about things. The people over there have so little and live such hard lives and yet are happy, strong, giving, proud and beautiful people. I have learnt not too worry about the small things and to appreciate everything we have. Tanzania and Kenya will be a big part of my future, I already can't wait to go back to visit and to explore other parts of Africa.
