Why did you decide to study abroad with Adelante in Scotland?

The Perth races in Scotland

Shayna: Upon receiving a study abroad scholarship from my home institution, I immediately began researching study abroad programs. As an aspiring veterinarian, I was interested in veterinary or animal related programs. When I discovered the Equine Summer Program through Google, I knew it was the right fit. I had wanted to study in Europe, and the program included courses in Equine Anatomy, Physiology, and Fitness. Once I found the program, I contacted Adelante with a few questions and the response was immediate and quite helpful. The combination of the subject matter of the study abroad, the location, and the program provider made me decide to study abroad in this program.

What made this study abroad experience unique and special?

Shayna: This program was special in many ways. Living near New York city, it is difficult to find other individuals interested in horses and horse care and this program allowed me to meet people who were pursuing similar goals to mine. I made great friends who I have a lot in common with. This program also included multiple trips which truly allowed us to experience Scottish culture. Living on the same campus as Scottish students also allowed for an insight into what Scotland is like. The trips were also flexible, with the teachers who drove us allowing us to pick different locations if we so desired. Many of the trips we went on were equestrian related, allowing a very hands on approach to learning that was truly remarkable. We visited dressage stables, eventing stables, the Royal Highland Show, and the Perth Races. These experiences gave us ample opportunities to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom. Lastly, the riding was absolutely superb. Having had no prior experience riding, I came home knowing how to walk, trot, and canter comfortably and correctly

How has this experience impacted your future?

Shayna: This program has had a major impact on my future. The trip gave me a feeling of independence that I do not have living in my parent's house. I made great friends from all over the country. I have learned skills and gained practical experience working with horses that will greatly help me when dealing with large animals in veterinary school.

Scottish Highlands

I have also gained a foundation of knowledge in equine anatomy, physiology, and fitness that will help me through future courses as well. The program even included a tour of the Royal Veterinary College of Scotland which really gave me an insight into what it might be like to attend veterinary school overseas which, as there are only 28 vet schools in the US, is a distinct possibility.

What is one piece of advice you would offer someone considering studying abroad in Scotland?

Shayna: I would advise anyone studying abroad in Scotland to research where you would like to go ahead of time, so as not to waste your precious time there. In addition, I would advise future students to exchange money ahead of time, and bring a debit card, not just a credit card.
