Best Experience of My Life!

This was one of the best experiences of my life as not only was Madrid itself one of the best cities I've ever been to, but the internship experience was one of the best intern/company experiences I've had. My internship was in sports and as it is one of the most difficult opportunities and career sectors to find opportunities in, I was nervous about how detailed/good my intern role would be. But it went above and beyond. I had the opportunity to learn new skills and be in a role that not only helped me strengthen my resume, but also gave me the confidence to be able to now go out in the job market and know I have the skillset to compete with other job applicants. Furthermore, my fellow interns, coworkers, and managers were some of the best people to work with and were always a reliable source to go to when I needed help or had questions.

Outside the internship, the apartment I stayed in was very well kept, clean, and in the best location within the city center. The only con was that the stovetop had a burner that did not function. But all other appliances that you could need were provided in both kitchen and room.

Overall, the internship and life experience provided me with some of the best times of my life. Both in career and social life.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
The one thing I would change is my confidence/outgoing-ness at the beginning of my internship. Moving to another country, speaking a different language, and being a long way from home for such an extended period of time is very nerve-wracking and it caused me to not be as outgoing and confident in getting out of my comfort zone at the very beginning of the internship. When I finally did feel comfortable and more confident, I felt as though it was later into the experience than I wanted. If I could go back, I would tell myself to push myself out of my comfort zone, take on the new tasks, volunteer to complete the "scary" projects, and explore the city with more confidence and extroverted-ness a lot sooner because the experience, and the 3 months, goes by faster than you think it will.
Pros
  • Location of apartment and walkability to work, historic locations/landmarks, shopping centers, etc.
  • Internship placement and ability to be proactive and learn new skills within the sports industry
  • Ability to connect with and network with other interns, coworkers, and locals.
Cons
  • Some apartment appliances are different/"outdated" compared to what someone may be used to in a country like the United States.

Incredible Internship Opportunity in Madrid

Adelante gave me the incredible opportunity to work with industry professionals in my field. I worked directly with professionals in my field and was fortunate enough to get to work with my first choice company. I was also able to make friends with all of my roommates and other's I met through networking around Madrid. In addition to the internship, there is the mandatory Spanish classes, which helped me strengthen my Spanish and meet new people from all walks of life who were also there to learn. The classes range from complete beginner to complete fluency which helped me as I was able to strengthen the basics and then move forward to where I believed I needed the most help.

My Internship Abroad

I was excited to work in the field of electrical engineering, at a drone designing start-up. I was met at the airport and driven to my flat in the center of Madrid. I made friends with my flat-mates and enjoyed their company. However, choosing to go to Madrid in the Summer was a bad idea, due to the excessive heat. My room had no air conditioning, and I had trouble sleeping at night due to the heat. My job was poorly structured, and my boss treated me and my coworker with little respect or respect for our time. We were supposed to work 20 hours/week, but ended up working up to 50 hours a week on our project which was to 3D design a drone. This project was given to us with no instructions, guidance, or software licenses, so I had to buy the software license out of my own pocket. The best part of my trip was definitely exploring the city itself, as I didn't have the best experience in my job.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Travel alone. Make friends at your destination, and put yourself out there. If you solo travel this way, you won't regret it at all. I enjoyed talking to the locals too, that took some courage to do, because I was afraid they would judge my spanish, but many locals are warm and good company.
Pros
  • Learning culture.
  • Speaking to locals.
  • Making international friends.
Cons
  • Some locals are more cold.
  • Spanish is different in Spain in comparison to Latin America.
  • Jobs are hard to find here.

Response from Adelante Abroad

Hi Francesco and thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We have heard from your company's Internship Supervisor on-site in Madrid that they were happy with you and felt sure you learned quite a lot that will carry over on to your Resume and into future professional experiences, which is always the goal. The heat in Madrid this summer was horrible and more intense than it has been in years. And while some housing has air conditioning, it still isn’t an automatic guarantee, so we always provide fans, assistance with learning when and how to move about in the heat and local tips on how to manage when it gets really bad. I am sorry that it was so so hot this year and that it affected you negatively. As to your work assignment, we are very surprised to hear your above comments in large part because 1) we checked in with you every single week and you mentioned nothing about above; 2) our on-site Adelante Director also checked in with you, and sent Whats App screenshots regularly, where she specifically asks “is everything going well, do you need assistance with anything” and you wrote “I have no complaints”; and 3) there was another candidate in the same work assignment at the same company at the same time as you, who has mentioned none of the things you write about above. This is the first time we are hearing about you having to buy licenses, so please know that we WILL reimburse you for any licenses you may have purchased, of course! If you had mentioned that at any time during your program, when it happened or after, we would have immediately required the company to reimburse you then The Dr. who was your Supervisor in the electrical engineering placement set your hours at 10 – 2/3 and stated that if you needed to go overtime to finish projects you would have to, and that if you finished early you would have days / time off. The hardest part of all of this for us as a team, is that if you would have mentioned your unhappiness at any time to any of the weekly checking-ins, from both our Madrid team and our HQ team, we certainly would have worked to make things more to your satisfaction.

An amazing time abroad!

My time abroad in Madrid with Adelante was amazing. I couldn't have been more grateful with the organization I was placed with, and the friends I made with others in the program. Being able to go to work with easy access to the metros and busses was perfect and added even more to the experience. To people thinking about going abroad and interning/volunteering: do it! Going abroad opens a door to new connections and opportunities that you might never find anywhere else. And being out of your comfort zone pushes you to try new things, and it’s amazing to see what comes out of that!

Summer in Madrid

Having studied in Madrid the previous semester I really wanted to come back and have a different type of work experience during the summer. I enjoyed the laid back environment of my internship with Fundación Tríangulo yet I gained valuable insight about public health and sexual health in Spain, among many other skills which will benefit my future career/studies. I did enjoy the centrality of our apartment but it was quite small, I know this is normal for Madrid. I enjoyed all the new connections

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make the most of your transportation pass. Visit new neighborhoods and cities in the mountains with Cercanías. There is so much more to Madrid than just shopping on Gran Via and Retiro park.

Why Madrid Was Worth It”

What made Adelante Abroad stand out was how real it felt. I didn’t go with friends or classmates—I showed up not knowing anyone. That meant I had to put myself out there, meet people, and build my own experience from the ground up. And honestly, that’s what made it so rewarding.

The internship pushed me professionally, and living in Madrid pushed me personally. I had to learn how to navigate a new culture and new people—all at once. It wasn’t always easy, but it was never boring.

If you're looking for a program where everything’s done for you, this might not be it. But if you want something real, where your growth depends on the effort you put in, this experience will stay with you.

Fair (and fun) experience at Adelante

Adelante Abroad has a great team of people running internship opportunities all over the globe (and they didn’t even pay me to say that).

I did a 3 month internship in Madrid related to the English language education and found it to be a suitable fit for my mandatory year abroad as part of my degree (I had completed 7 months working in France and needed a shorter stay in Spain to make it back to my university on time).

The support given pre-departure was well thought out and helpful, especially since I had to liaise between Adelante and my university to get everything approved before arrival. The team is responsive and is happy to help provide extra information if you just pop them an email.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
In Madrid, after receiving your personal transport card, under 25s can travel on all public transport in the WHOLE Madrid community for an entire month for only 10€ (July 2025, it was 8€ when I first arrived). This allows you to visit historical sites far away from the centre. Indeed, the cheap price was shocking.
Pros
  • Meeting a diverse pool of people at the 2 week language course
  • Accommodation right next to the Puerta del Sol, connected to 3 metro lines and 1 urban train line
  • Thoughtful check-ups from the Adelante team every month
Cons
  • Any initial questions sent to the email listed on the Adelante website resulted in less specific responses than once you have your first interview with the team (makes sense but can be frustrating at first)
  • Many of the accommodation options are very close to the city centre, where concerts often are held. Do the maths 🧮
  • In summer, the school which Adelante partners with in Spain does not fix the air conditioning in the rooms. You need to adapt to the heat (up to 40C)

Enriching Intern Experience in Madrid

Adelante did a great job placing me with a company that matched my interests perfectly--a foundation researching topics related to both Criminology & Psychology. I learned quite a bit about these systems in Spain, and felt very welcomed by the school and company during the whole process. The two weeks of Spanish school before my program were very fun, and helped me to meet a few people in the city I was staying. Additionally, the location of my housing was perfect as it was very centralized, with easy access to all sights.

What would you improve about this program?
I felt a bit isolated during my time here, to be honest. Some of my suggestions to improve this sensation moving forward: have Eureka keep in touch with students after they finish their two weeks there (I didn't hear from Angel once), connect Adelante students in Madrid together, provide some links to events to meet people (Lync, Wed night @ Calle 365, etc).

Also, I wish Adelante would've made it clear to the company I interned at that I was to do work in Spanish. Maybe this was a miscommunication, but I felt as though Adelante was advertised as a Spanish internship experience focused on building language skills. However, in my company, about half of the work I did was proofreading something in English, which was not beneficial to me.
Pros
  • Eureka Spanish school professors
  • Ability to travel on the weekends
  • Learn about Spanish Culture
Cons
  • Isolation
  • Work in English
