TEFL Institute - Online TEFL Certification
The online TEFL Professional class is conducted in a Virtual Learning Environment hosted on TEFL Instutute Online. TEFL Institute Online TEFL classes (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) are ideal for students seeking to teach English abroad professionally as a paid English teacher, those who wish to train part time with the ease and flexibility of distance learning, and with a significantly lower cost than the traditional 4 week international TEFL certification course. The 150 hours of training is the industry standard for professional TEFL certification worldwide. (130 hours of class work, 20 hours of practicum.)
The 130 hours of online TEFL academic coursework translates to approximately 12-15 hours a week of work over a 2 month period. You will also have a 20 hour Practicum (student teaching and observation at a local ESL classroom in your town or community).
Your online TEFL coursework can be completed at any time of the day but follows a weekly timetable with your classmates. A TEFL Institute online student will be part of a class of 20-25 online students from North America, Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East.
You will have 1 chapter (Module) per week of reading, 2-3 timed quizzes, 2-3 projects (lesson plans, essays, short projects), and a requirement of providing feedback to at least 2 of your peer's work for every assignment.
The four cornerstones of language learning will be covered:
Speaking, listening, reading and writing. TEFL training covers the basics of language methodology, linguistics, phonetics, vocabulary and grammar. Teaching skills of lesson planning, curriculum development, classroom management skills, personality, and language assessments are covered.

Alumni Interviews
Meet Danielle Jadusingh, TEFL Institute Online TEFL Course alum
GO: Why did you choose TEFL Institute?
Danielle: At the time I saw the advertisment for the TEFL Institute - I was an English Assistant in Colombia and I thought if I am going to teach English I should be qualified to do so: if you are going to do a job - do the job well. The online course seemed like a perfect way to get qualified while teaching. It was affordable and I was able to relate my studies immediately to my work.
GO: Why are you interested in teaching abroad?
Danielle: It is a convenient way to work and travel at the same time. I get to do something I love ie teaching English and really have a chance to explore the country I am in.
GO: How has this experience impacted your future?
Danielle: Doing the TEFL Certificate has really opened doors for me and now I am truely interested in pursuing a long term career in teaching English. Personally, I have grown as an individual and a teacher and am glad that I invested the time and energy to do the course.
GO: Where would you like to teach and why?
Danielle: Wow - If I could I would go all over the world to teach hahaha - Let me list maybe 5 of my favorite interests outside of China and Colombia my 2 favorites as I have friends there:
- Turkey: That country is a terrific blend of East and West and has a lot of historical places to explore.
- Japan: Another cool place to learn and explore.
- France: I went there as a child with my family and it would be great to explore the place on my own as an adult and improve my French.
- Morocco: Another interesting place to check out which is close to the Mediterranean.
- Brazil: Awesome place for Carnival, capoeira, Brazilian Jujitsu, Samba, history culture.. man I have a long list haha.
- I have others that grab my attention: Russia, Romania, India, Taiwan, Hungary, Ecuador... too many countries to list.

I would not recommend this course. I had a TEFL advisor who pushed me into paying for the course early, because there were "already almost 10 students signed up" for the onsite course and if I wanted to get into the course with 2 others, I needed to pay for it in Jan. When I got to the onsite course there were only 2 other people there i.e. we were nowhere near capacity. If I had waited until Feb, as planned, I would have gotten the course at a discounted rate. I was told by another student in the LA course that this also happened to her and her advisor was a different person, so I guess this is a tactic they use to get you to sign up before the course is discounted. My advisor also told me that all of us (myself and the 2 people I signed up with) had to buy the course book. Luckily I was the only one who bought it, because all of the reading was free online (and ironically, riddled with errors.) To me it was obvious that instead of trying to help me, this woman was just trying to sell me as much as she could. I brought my complaints to TEFL Institute and they said they were looking into these things, but that was three weeks ago. She finally said that she was sorry for my troubles, but didn't take any action that lead me to believe that she actually cared.
As for the instructor, he may have been knowledgeable, but his lack of participation in the course didn't demonstrate what his impressive resume did. I was not impressed by his feedback and the tardiness with which it was given. In the final week of the course, I only had grades on 3/15 assignments. How can we improve without feedback? How can we keep from making mistakes when our instructor hasn't told us what they are and at this point we've now had to turn in multiple lesson plans? When he finally started grading our assignments, some comments were as simple as a "Yup" or a "Three pointer no net." Other lesson plans were not given any comments just an arbitrary grade in the grade book.
There was a definite lack of leadership. It seemed as if there was no online instructor and I got more out of hearing from other students, since he was never around. This very instructor also didn't show up to the Chicago onsite course for two days and no one was able to get a hold of him. The students in the online course were aware and a lot of us thought that something terrible must have happened to the instructor since he hadn't been online or graded any assignments in over a week either. I called student services to see what would happen to the online portion of the course. A woman told me that the instructor was being replaced, but she would email later to let me know for sure. She didn't. Eventually, the instructor came back online as if nothing had happened and didn't offer any explanations for his absence. I eventually stopped asking him questions, because for the most part, students never received answers or the instructor couldn't answer them.
This led me to contact Student Services again which was awful. They hardly ever answer the phone and when they do, they don t get back to you or answer any of your questions in a timely manner. Most of the time I was shuffled around to others, who then took a long amount of time to get back to me. Since the online portion of the course was so unorganized (nothing on the calendar, due dates never specified and an instructor who was never online and had no knowledge of the workings of TEFL Institute), it was necessary to contact Student Services more than once. I was told by other students that they had the same experience.
Thanks to my on-site instructor, I got a lot out of this course, however she is not a regular instructor with TEFL Institute.
The idea of TEFL Institute is great, but the reality was not as great and the only great parts were dependent upon chance. I had 5 amazing days with an incredible onsite instructor, but five weeks of uncertainty, disorganization and basically no online instructor.
