South Africa Travel Wiki

South Africa (officially, the Republic of South Africa, or RSA) is the southernmost country in Africa. Affectionately known as Mzansi to its residents, it is bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Swaziland, while entirely surrounding the country of Lesotho (one of only three such arrangements). Sporting eleven official languages and a few more unofficial ones, South Africa is head-spinningly diverse, though English has emerged as the de facto lingua franca.

Though South Africa has a stable government, a well-managed currency, and the largest economy in Africa, it is still working through the devastating aftereffects of the Apartheid regime. Its inequality and crime rates are among the highest in the world. Unemployment, persistently around 25%, is a deep and continuing problem. Racial tensions still simmer.

Nevertheless, South Africa is one of the world's most beautiful countries. From the skeletal spare desert south of Namibia to the Mediterranean wine country in northern Western Cape to the organized, safe and temperate Cape Town; from the stark, drenched Tsitsikamma and Port Elizabeth to the warm sun of Durban to the bitter cold of the winter Drakensburg; from the high riot of Johannesburg to the constrained wildness of Kruger to the cool fog of the winter highveld outside Nelspruit; South Africa is a land of contrast well worth visiting.

See & Do

South Africa has the world's largest game park, Kruger National Park.

Hermanus is a must. It is the perfect spot to sit and watch the great Southern Right Whales launch from the ocean.

Food & Drink

The Springbok shot is a favorite among travelers in South Africa. The shot consists of three layers that consist of white creme de menthe, amarula cream liqueur with a dash of cream and while consuming the drink you must place your hands up on your head, like the ears of a Springbok.

Health & Safety

Women are not required to stop at stop-signs in their car when it is dark.

Sports

Soccer is the most popular sport, with the national team of Bafana Bafana always drawing wide support. The interstate league favorites include the Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Rugby is also popular, particularly among the white population, and the national team is known as the Springboks.

Though Bafana Bafana has not as yet been very competitive on the international stage, Mzansi's rugby team is one the world's best. The Springboks are a three-time winner of the World Cup, most famously in 1995 as portrayed in the movie Invictus.

Broadly speaking, the lowveld area, which is a ring around the coasts, has dry summers and wet winters. Further inland, the highveld has dry winters and wet summers. Within those categories, though, there is still variation: Cape Town, on the southwestern coast, is usually windy and cool, while Durban on the northeastern coast tends to be more tropical.
