Alumni Interviews
Interview with Drew Kidd, ISA Dominican Republic alum

GO: Why did you decide to study abroad with ISA in Santiago?
Drew: I decided to study abroad in Santiago because I am a Spanish Education major and it is part of my degree requirement to study abroad for a semester and/or year. I chose Santiago because I am a college baseball player and wanted to go somewhere that would provide opportunities to continue playing and Dominicans love their baseball or "pelota" so I knew it would be a good fit.
GO: What do you think made this experience unique and special?
Drew: This experience was so special to me because this had been the first time I had traveled outside the country and happened to be so blessed to be placed with such a wonderful host family. The Aybars were so open and accepting and did everything they could to make me feel a part of the family from day one. I am forever a part of their family and that family was the sole reason my trip was a success.
GO: How did this experience impact your academic development?
Drew: This experience impacted me in many ways. First, it impacted me personally. My speaking abilities tremendously improved and I am still functioning at a high level because of that trip. Next, it impacted me professionally. While in Santiago and studying at PUCMM, I had the opportunity to observe and teach in a number of different classrooms. I taught five university level English acquisition while at PUCMM and through the ELAP program, I was able to teach an English acquisition class at the elementary level. These two opportunities have given me an invaluable amount of confidence before I step into my first teaching job.
