About Program
Have you ever wanted to wake up to the sound of tropical birds greeting the day, or see the sunrise over the warm waves of the Caribbean?
SFS programs in Panama take place in the diverse environments of the Bocas del Toro archipelago – coral reefs, mangrove islands, inland rainforests, and sandy palm beaches. Courses and fieldwork focus on key environmental issues faced here such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, tourism impacts, and ecosystem health. Climate change and increased tourism on the islands have led to ecosystem and natural resource degradation while also threatening islanders’ traditional livelihoods. Our research on the environmental impacts of tourism and development on the natural ecosystems in Bocas provides the community with data necessary to support more sustainable policies and protect the beautiful islands so many call home.

Program Highlights
- Assist with coral nursery maintenance at the Caribbean Coral Restoration Center, surveying nearby reefs for coral health and recruitment rates.
- Trek mangrove islands and rainforest trails, collecting species data and linking habitat health to local policy impacts.
- Record plant uses and agroforestry practices on cacao farms, sampling products and documenting cultural narratives.
- Chart waste flows and coastal pressures during inter-island field trips, from fishing docks to seagrass beds.
- Conduct Directed Research: frame a stakeholder-driven question, collect and analyze field data with faculty guidance, and present actionable findings to local partners.
Popular Programs
On Isla Colón in Bocas del Toro, coral reefs, mangroves, and tropical forests create a highly biodiverse Caribbean seascape. Students move from reef transects to frog surveys, ant trails, and mangrove mapping, often spotting parrots that reveal how connected these systems are. But development threatens this fragility. Each project highlights how conservation and local livelihoods must be balanced on islands under global pressure.
Study abroad in Panama and immerse yourself in the dynamic community of Bocas del Toro. Snorkel and hike through the diverse environments of Bocas – from coral reefs and mangroves to beaches and rainforests – and study human impacts, such as tourism, on the island’s ecosystems and communities. Meet the local residents who depend on both tourism and natural resources and learn about current approaches to sustainable development in the archipelago.
