SIT Study Abroad Senegal: National Identity and the Arts

Looking for a unique and amazing study abroad program in West Africa? Then look no further! SIT Study abroad is proud to offer students the opportunity to live and study abroad in Dakar, Senegal. Despite it's small size and population, Senegal plays an important role in West Africa's arts, culture, and politics. For the last three centuries, Senegal has inspired poets, novelists, and researchers, emerging as one of the most significant patrons of the arts in all of Africa. Led to independence by internationally acclaimed poet and philosopher Leopold Senghor, Senegal has throughout its history emphasized the role of arts and culture in society.

Sounds pretty amazing, right? We certainly think so. Visit the SIT Study Abroad website to learn how you can study abroad in Senegal next semester, and fill out an online application.

SIT Senegal

SIT is an incredibly well-run organization. The staff are very supportive, knowledgeable, and available. Throughout my semester in Senegal I felt well integrated into the community and was able to gain access to cultural events, sites, and cultural centers that I would not have on my own. The semester and syllabus are mapped out very well, and I improved my French skills more in one semester than I had in years of taking French at home! I would wholeheartedly recommend SIT.

GO: Why did you decide to study abroad with SIT in Senegal?

Rachel: I decided to study abroad with SIT in Senegal because I wanted to study in francophone west Africa, and I'd heard positive reviews of SIT's programs.

GO: What do you think made this experience unique and special?

Rachel: What made this experience unique and special for me were the local staff and the thought that was put into designing the program. First of all, staff were always available at school to chat or give advice, and they were very supportive of the students. The semester included home stays, village stays, day trips to museums and cultural centers in Dakar as well as an excursion to Goree Island. The timing of the trips was mapped out perfectly, and I felt as though I was learning a great deal every day! The classes were interesting and relevant, and it was a great opportunity to improve my French skills, as well as learn a new language - Wolof!

GO: How did this experience impact your academic development?

Rachel: The experience impacted my future by enhancing my passion for learning about other peoples and traveling. I drew upon my experiences in Senegal in my studies at Washington University, and felt that I'd gained a broader world view. Now, I actually work for Projects Abroad, helping volunteers travel overseas to have their own life-changing experience!
