Spending a semester at the University of Cape Town is a literally once in a lifetime opportunity. Affectionately known as the Mother City, Cape Town was founded in 1652 and is South Africa's oldest city. Rated as one of the most beautiful cities in the world with a backdrop of flat-topped Table Mountain juxtaposed by the sweep of the Atlantic Ocean. You can hike or take a cable-car ride up Table Mountain to enjoy the breathtaking view of the city and peninsula, take a ferry to the historic Robben Island, or visit the Cape of Good Hope. The University of Cape Town (UCT) is South Africa's oldest university and one of the continent's leading teaching and research institutions.

Lack of safety in the housing in 2008. Hopefully much improved by now. The location was good, however the housing I received was subpar and was not officially "ready" for inhabitants when we got there. The program staff was helpful as much as they could be, but they were a bit too small in number when we really needed action taken.
Cape Town is amazing though, and despite the grievances I had an awesome time. Go CIEE.

Someone who wants a different culture experience, especially one in an English speaking country. I really have only positive things to say about my abroad experience. Cape Town is incredible, and South Africa and Africa in general blew me away. I would recommend going to UCT and InterStudy to almost anyone.
