Program Description

UCLA Summer Abroad Program in Cape Town, South Africa

Description:

Students will join UCLA to study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa and examine the historical roots of racial discrimination, particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and investigate the ways in which African resistance in the latter half of the 20th century brought to an end white supremacy and the political system of apartheid.

This is a two-week summer program starting in Cape Town, before moving to a rural African community where students will work on community service projects, focusing especially on one-on-one work with children. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more study African culture while giving back to communities in need. I really wanted to study abroad in Africa and found a program offered during the summer through UCLA. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life! Professor William Worger is a wealth of knowledge and makes his lessons engaging and interactive. While in Cape Town, we learned about Robben Island (the island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned) and then visited the site in the afternoon. The unique part of this program is that you actually visit several cities over the course of the program. My journey started in Cape Town and ended in Johannesburg with my most memorable stop being a few days at a game reserve (a nice break from studying!). I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to see Africa, learn about its incredible history and meet amazing people (your fellow students and the locals).
