The CEA CAPA World Blog promotes stories and personal experiences from the perspectives of diverse student bloggers and vloggers.

Studying abroad in Seville

I loved my experience studying abroad in Seville! I felt as though the city was the perfect size for what I was looking for, and I constantly found new things to try out. CEA Capa was very supportive and I created strong relationships with my professors and CEA Capa staff during my time abroad. I also met so many amazing friends through my program! Seville is very walkable and I loved exploring the city by walking or biking with my friends. I also loved how Seville has an accessible and easy to navigate airport for traveling.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve-racking moment for me was leaving to study abroad. I was unsure of what the semester would look like for me, and how I would adjust being so far away from home. Upon arrival I felt instantly welcome and at home in Seville.

Sevilla!

I absolutely loved the city of Sevilla. It was small enough to walk everywhere, but still felt like there was so much to see. It has such a rich history, and I enjoyed getting to know every part of it. I felt completely safe all the time, and I made the best friends. The people in Sevilla are so nice, even when you struggle with your Spanish. If you are looking for a going-out scene, you can definitely find it. There were tons of study abroad students from all different programs, so it was easy to find people to connect with. It was the perfect study abroad city!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
At one of the restaurants in Sevilla, I ate kangaroo. I'm not one to go that far out of the box, but my friends encouraged me to try it. It ended up tasting like beef, so there was no big whoop in the end. I thought it was a cool experience, and now I get to tell people I've tried kangaroo!
Pros
  • Safety
  • Very community-based
  • Walkable
Cons
  • Spanish if you're an English-only speaker
  • There are some places you can't bike or drive, only walk

My Time Abroad

Studying Abroad in Sevilla was one of the best decisions I ever made in college. I decided to go abroad alone(with no one from my school) and although I was initially scared I do not regret it at all. I got to meet new people, make new friends, and connect with people of various different backgrounds all across the U.S. and world. Making new friends and experiencing the same thing with them (being abroad and traveling) is a memory I will never forget. Don't be afraid to try something new, just do it!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Come with an open mind. Be open to trying new things and new activities with new people. Even if you would never think of doing certain things back at home, be open and try them abroad!!
Pros
  • Cultural immersion
  • Beautiful city

My Experience in Sevilla, Fall 2025

Studying abroad in Sevilla has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Living closely with three strangers and my Señora pushed me far outside my comfort zone and strengthened my Spanish through daily conversations at home and in the community. Sharing home-cooked meals, adapting to busy city life, and exploring historic streets, parks, and plazas changed my perspective. I grew more confident, independent, and culturally aware. Sevilla no longer feels foreign—it feels like a second home that has shaped who I am.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Remain open-minded and seek out new experience constantly.
Pros
  • Welcoming, warm community
  • Central European location for travel
  • Splendid weather (after heat of summer months)
Cons
  • Summer heat
  • Less diversity

First time leaving the south

I was fortunate to get a scholarship through the University of Alabama and CEA CAPA so I essentially got to go abroad for free. I have never traveled outside of the south, let alone go without my family. CEA CAPA supported me throughout my journey and helped me connect with people along the way. I was able to visit 5 countries while abroad, with people I had only just met. It was a journey of a lifetime that I would love to return to. I got to live in the oldest part of our neighborhood, I was expected to be greeted with distaste, but I was accepted with open arms into the culture.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
When visiting Italy, I went with a girl I had known for a week! We started our journey by sleeping in the Rome airport, then being separated on buses and staying awake for 24+ hours. Later on we even got separated on a train, with no cell reception. luckily It all worked out and we were able to laugh it out. I was very stressful considering it was also my birthday.
Pros
  • gained problem solving skills
  • character development
  • its a funny story to tell now
Cons
  • It was really scary!
  • I got homesick
  • It was nerve racking to travel with new people.

Seville with CEA CAPA

Seville was the best city I could have ever studied abroad in, and CEA CAPA was a huge part of why the experience was so positive. The program ensured everything would be handled for us before departure. Arriving in Seville, I met fellow students, and we took an airport shuttle (provided by CEA CAPA) to our assigned housing. Seville is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited, and I am so grateful to have spent a semester there. It is incredibly traditional and historic, steeped in southern Spanish culture. We experienced many culture shocks as American students, but the program made sure we would be prepared for them and not take them negatively. Instead, we accepted them as part of the experience.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Meeting my host family for the first time was one of the scariest moments of my semester. I was on the airport shuttle bus the program provided, dropping all of us off at our housing placements, and as I realized it was my turn, my stomach was in knots. I thought to myself, this is the family I am living with for four months, and I don't know how I'm going to communicate with them because I can't speak any Spanish. As soon as I met my host mom, though, all of my worries went away. Yes, I couldn't understand her very well and was struggling to respond to her questions, but I could tell she was incredibly kind and would be very helpful. She made sure I felt at home and that if I had any issues or problems with anything, to let her know.
Pros
  • Meeting new friends
  • Experiencing new cultures (language, food, social dynamics)
  • Improving my Spanish language skills
Cons
  • Time table culture shocks
  • Understanding the social dynamics of Spain
  • Missing my family and friends back home

GO TO SEVILLE!!

My study abroad experience in Seville, Spain was truly the best decision I have ever made. I was very hesitant at first because it is very uncommon for people to go abroad their first year of college, but choosing to go transformed my life in ways I never expected. The experience was unique because it pushed me far outside my comfort zone while also giving me the space to grow personally, academically, and spiritually. I learned how to navigate daily life in another country, from grocery shopping to commuting to class, and by the end I was switching between English and Spanish naturally. I made lifelong friends, became more independent, and even discovered my career path by deciding to pursue accounting with international business and a Spanish minor. Studying abroad also deepened my Catholic faith, especially during Semana Santa, where I experienced traditions and history that were incredibly meaningful as a recent convert. The strong sense of community, work life balance, and emphasis on relationships in Spain gave me a new perspective on what I value in life. Traveling to multiple countries and cities, volunteering, participating in excursions, and meeting lifelong friends made this abroad experience unforgettable. What made it especially unique was how much it changed me. I left more curious, confident, and excited about learning and life. By the end, I was hesitant to leave, and I would do it all again in a heartbeat, which is why I am studying abroad again next year!!

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment is when I was coming back from a night out with my friends and they decided to jump in the fountain! Definitely unforgettable.
Pros
  • The teachers and staff were very supportive.
  • The city was not too overwhelming and was very culturally immersive.
  • There were many meaningful excursions and travel opportunities.
Cons
  • The adjustment period/time difference at the beginning was challenging.
  • The language barrier could be frustrating at times, but the people were very nice and accomodating.
  • Being far from home was sometimes difficult emotionally.

Abroad Anecdote

While abroad, I had hoped to gain a unique experience as an 18 year old, and a unique experience I had! I had a great time trying tapas, traveling, and learning more about the History of Seville. Moreover, the classes were engaging, my favorite being International Business and Art and Architecture of Seville. It was really fun to meet people both in my program and other students from Spain. Overall, I can say with 100% certainty that this experience provided not only personal growth but professional development as well.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
My advice to future travelers would be to plan trips in advance. My hesitation towards doing this was that I wanted to see what others in my group were doing, but it would have been just as easy for me to plan things before and then invite people on the trips. Time flies, and it can be hard to set aside time for planning.
Pros
  • Learning more history and about another culture
  • Trying new foods!
  • Meeting new people and making lifelong friends.
Cons
  • Away from your friends and family back home.
  • Can be hard to adjust to living in another place at first.
