The Best 6 Months of My Life

After spending six months in Spain, I can honestly say that Granada is my favorite place in the world. That city is absolutely enchanting. With the incredible mix of cultures, outgoing people, exciting nightlife and gorgeous city, I genuinely think it is the perfect place to study abroad. Every single week I learned a new lesson and every day I found a new aspect of the city that I loved. I stayed in a homestay, where I learned even more about Spanish customs and lifestyles. Over all, CEA equipped me with every tool necessary to make my experience unique and to this day I can clearly define my decision to study abroad as the best one that I have ever made.

Critical Feedback:

I would have lived in a homestay for a few months, then gotten an apartment in the city for the remainder of my time.

The Greatest Investment

Going abroad was the best decision I have made in my life so far, especially going abroad to Granada with CEA. Granada is absolutely breath taking. The city is small and easy to travel without having to take a cab or bus. Walking around the city was one of my favorite parts. There is something to discover every day, either meeting new people or finding a new place to admire. During my semester, I stayed with a host family. I absolutely loved it! My host mom was incredibly sweet and caring. She made delicious food. I rarely eat out side because of her magnificent taste in cooking.
One of the best things about Granada, besides being the greatest city in the world is that is very affordable. Going out to eat, traveling to the beach or nearby cities was reasonably affordable. Granada is a unique city. It has a stunning architecture, a mix of cultures and a warm friendly atmosphere. The CEA staff I consider to be one of the best. They helped me so much with every little request I had. They made us feel comfortable right away. Overall, the program was well organized. The staff knew all of our names and they were friendly, easy to talk to whenever we needed them. Studying abroad in Granada was the best investment in my life and for my future career. Now, Granada has a part of my heart and is definitely a place I recommend to anyone out there to visit.

Amazing Experience

I did the program in the summer of 2002. We had classes M-F either from 8am-12pm or from 4pm-8pm which were very conversational and fun. The program often coordinated dinners throughout the week and each weekend there were planned excursions to other cities in Spain (weekend in Sevilla, weekend in Madrid, trip to the beach, etc). The program staff was fairly young and energetic and loved to hang out with our group and was very responsive to our needs.

Best Semester Ever

Living in Granada changed my whole view on life. It was very relaxed and enjoyable. Monday through Thursday I went to class until about 2 in the afternoon, which is lunchtime. My host mom always cooked delicious meals for lunch and dinner. After lunch, the rest of the afternoon was mine to nap, shop, or explore with friends. Dinner was usually around 9pm and then I would go to the bars or a club. Nightlife was so exciting and there was something for everyone. It is very easy to travel throughout Europe and that's what the 3 day weekends were for. Overall, the Spanish lifestyle is awesome.

Critical Feedback:

CEA could use more activities that integrated Spanish people with the American students. More intercambios!

GO: Why did you decide to study abroad with CEA?

Emily: Deciding to study abroad was a very scary commitment. I was nervous, anxious and felt unprepared. My university told me that CEA had the best program for what I wanted, and there were many other ISU students going at the same time through CEA, so that eased my nerves a bit. CEA was very organized and extremely helpful throughout the whole application and pre-departure process. My representative was very timely with responding to my questions and always had an answer or knew where to direct me. Abroad, the CEA staff was awesome. They were also extremely organized and helpful and were very experienced working with American students. CEA truly helped make my study abroad experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

GO: How has this experience impacted your future?

Emily: Studying abroad completely changed my life for the better. Before I left, I was a shy and very worrisome person. I hung out with my friends only and did not like to branch out. Being in a foreign country completely changed me. I left with an open mind because I did not know anyone else going. I quickly and easily made friendships that I know will last the rest of my life. It is important to remember that everyone is in the same position as you. You are all alone and in a foreign country together which is comforting. Studying abroad truly broadened my horizons and made me appreciate all of the things I have in my life. Also, I am much more open to new experiences and willing to talk to people that I don't know and branch out of my comfort zone. I learned to not let the little things stress me out or ruin my day, because sometimes there are bumps along the way but you will always make it to your destination.
