API at Kingston University London

Ideally suited for students who want the best of both worlds: Study in the London metro area in a quieter setting, away from the hustle and bustle of the capital city. Kingston University offers courses across academic disciplines and is especially strong in Education, Fashion and Design, Communication and Journalism, and Health Sciences (including Sport Science). Students will enroll alongside British and international students from around the world and will earn 12-15 credits.

Located in the vibrant hub of London, Richmond, the American International University London offers small, intimate classes, the opportunity to study with students from around the world, & industry connections. Courses in popular majors are easily transferable. Richmond was recently voted a top 5 London university for student satisfaction by their undergraduate students. Summer students will attend the Richmond campus, while fall 2022 students will attend the new Chiswick campus in west London.

The University of Westminster, with 20,000 students, is divided into four campuses. Every campus has its own individual character and is home to a significant international student body, its own library, and catering facilities. I studied abroad with API during the fall 2009 semester and my experience still positively impacts my life 10 years later! I loved all the things that were included in the program, such as the excursions and cultural events, and I felt truly supported by the API staff both in the US and abroad. While in London, API gave me the opportunity to grow more independent and confident and I developed a love of travel. I am still great friends with many people I met while abroad. I highly recommend every student study abroad!

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

Take every opportunity you have to explore London! There is so much to see and do and a lot of it is free! Check out museums, explore the thousands of parks, go to a lunchtime concert at St. Martin-in-the-Fields—all for free! Get out and walk around or use the Tube to explore all the unique areas around London.

I studied abroad in London, and I decided to really create a life for myself when I was abroad. I wanted to take part in my experience, not just be a tourist. UAL offers a freshers fair for newcomers, and I attended and met the football club. I was hesitant to join, but one of my course mates was also on the team. She encouraged me to come to a training session and joined the team. It took them two weeks to break the habit of me calling it soccer, but by the time I did, they had become my family in London.
I spent my last night in London with this team. The entire night I knew I needed to get back to my flat to pack, but I just could not leave them. These girls became my best friends. I stayed so late that I actually overslept and missed my flight home. I eventually got back home safely but miss those people every day. Going to London with API, choosing that school and meeting that time is the best decision I ever made.

What would you improve about this program?

I would have loved some assistance in professional development.
API did not have to provide it, but maybe some tips about how to use that time professionally too.

I participated in the API Study Abroad Program at the University of the Arts - Camberwell College of the Arts (for photography) in London, England. My first choice was Paris, but I panicked about being away from my family and friends for 3 months, especially because I did not speak the language. I ended up deciding on London because it was a place that I had been previously, and the arts program looked like something that I could really enjoy. I am so glad that I changed my mind! I was the first to attend Camberwell College of the Arts, so there were a few bumps that needed to be worked out, mostly just figuring out what classes I was to take, but I couldn't have enjoyed the experience more. The classes taught me to push my thinking outside of the box and not rely on such detailed project descriptions to finish my assignment. Our resident director was amazing. She was there whenever I had question and took us on awesome trips around the city (and even outside the area). After I graduated from my undergraduate degree, I ended up going back to London for my Master and even helped out the local API resident director for a few weeks with her new students!

Why did you decide to go abroad with your provider?

Kimberly: I knew when I was applying for colleges that I had every intention of studying abroad. The second I saw any information about traveling, I was at that meeting, even if it was my freshman year and way too early to go. I had previously been to the United Kingdom when I was younger and knew it was a place I was comfortable with, so when I found Academics Program International, I knew it was going to be a great fit.

I decided to go with that program because there was a Resident Director that would be in the area and accessible via phone if we ever had any trouble. There were also scheduled excursions which I was very excited to be given the opportunity to go on. Lastly, the arts program that I would be attending, while new, fit with what I was studying at my home university.

Where was your best photo taken and what was it of?

Kimberly: When I first arrived at Camberwell College of the Arts, I was overwhelmed with our first project. Not because it was a hard project, but because we were given so much freedom with what to do with it. American schools are a little more specific on what you do, but for this project we were just told "Time."

Each person had their own idea of what time meant. Some appropriated images that were found, while I took it literally and tried to freeze time. I took this picture of a double-decker bus traveling through Leicester Square and was very pleased with the results. I have it printed poster-sized and hanging on my wall at home!

What is one piece of advice you'd give future students traveling with your program?

Kimberly: Take advantage of every opportunity that you have while you are abroad. Any events that your school is putting on, excursions with the resident director and other members of your group, and make friends outside of your group. If you make friends with local students, you will get to see London from a their perspective and not just from the program. Lastly, if you are brave enough, travel by yourself! I traveled to Paris for the day and I was able to see the city at my own pace.

How has this experience impacted your future? (Personally, professionally, academically, etc)

Kimberly: First and foremost, it gave me the travel bug! I decided after my program finished, that I want to see as much of the world as possible. For my senior year of college we were given the chance to take a course where were would go to Sicily for 10 days during spring break to take pictures, paint and draw. I gladly applied for that class.

Later, I ended up heading back to London for my masters. I was able to spend a year living in the heart of London. From there, I was able to travel to Belgium, Croatia, Ireland and visited family friends who live in Newquay, England.

I feel like studying abroad has given me a respect for different cultures and cities that I might not have had before I went. I am very appreciative of every opportunity that I have had to travel and I feel that this has made me a braver and stronger person as a whole.
