Taiwan Travel Homepage

Taiwan is a small island nation located just off the souther coast of China. For all practical purposes Taiwan has been independent for the past half century, but the Chinese government still regards it as a rebel region that must be reunited with the mainland - by force if necessary. China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949, when the defeated Nationalist government fled to the island as the Communists, under Mao Zedong, swept to power. Before that, Taiwan was briefly governed by the Japanese and you may still find some older Taiwanese people speaking in a mix of Japanese, Taiwanese, and Chinese.

Taiwan is regarded as one of the top destinations in Asa in which to teach English abroad. Every year hundreds of new teachers come to Taiwan to join an already vibrant expat community. Most of the best opportunities to teach English are located in the capital city of Taipei (see map) and surrounding areas, but there are a number of other cities that are wroth investigating as well: Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Hualien to name a few. Jobs in Taiwan have the highest earning potential, but the city also has the highest cost of living.

Approximate 1st year teacher monthly income ? $NT50-55,000 (after taxes). Each subsequent year you stay in Taiwan you can expect to make an additional $NT5,000. You can also supplement your income with private lessons and charge as much as $NT800 / hour.

Food & Drink

Taiwan is highly regarded throughout Asia for it's unique and delicious cuisine. You certainly won't starve when you come to teach, study, or volunteer in Taiwan!

Some local favorites:
- Dumplings are everywhere. Cheap and delicious!
- Beef noodle soup is a local favorite.
- Milk tea is a popular beverage.
- You'll certainly know when you walk by a stinky tofu stall. The stinkier the better!
- Taiwan is known for it's large night markets. You'll find a lot of delicious and interesting foods to try.

Visa Information

Americans can land in Taiwan and automatically receive a 30-day tourist visa. It's pretty easy to extend this to 60 days by visiting an embassy and filling out the required forms.

Health & Safety

Taiwan is an extremely safe country to live and travel in, even for women at night. Violent crime and muggings are very rare, although pickpockets are known to strike at crowded street markets. Just exercise a little caution and you'll be fine.

The southern city of Kaohsiung is a major port and does have a reputation for high levels of organized crime. Very rarely does this affect the lives of foreigners or travelers in Taiwan, though.

Driving in Taiwan can be a little crazy and a safety hazard. Basically, whoever is in the biggest vehicle has the right of way and pedestrians are at the bottom of the totem pole. Everyone and their mom drives a scooter and you'll constantly seem them zipping in and out of driving lanes. Start off slow as you get used to the flow of traffic.

Sports

Baseball is king in Taiwan and everyone loves the Yankees. It's generally pretty easy to find a team to play most major world sports: Soccer, basketball, tennis, baseball, rugby.
