Viviendo La Pura Vida

I came to CECOS as a graduate intern studying Nonprofit Management and Development. I lived and volunteered here for 6 months, along with my three children (ages 13,12, and 8). I must say that Sarapiqui is a wonderful place to travel with your family, and CECOS was a huge part of our enjoyment. My children were able to experience intercultural exchanges with the local kids, learn Spanish, and enjoy the beauty and diversity of the rainforest. Playing with monkeys, reforestation projects, rafting, jumping from the Puente de Chilamate, learning how to open pipas with a machete.... all of it has enriched our lives. Likewise, the staff and volunteers at CECOS became a part of our hearts forever. (WE LOVE YOU YAZMIN!) We actually leave in a few days and we are super sad about this. We will definitely be back!!! I highly recommend that you volunteer at CECOS.

Recommendations: Bring bug spray, hydrocortisone cream, sunscreen, and a flexible outlook on life.

What would you improve about this program?
A stronger organizational relationship with the Board of Directors and less reliance on Selva Verde Resort.

Go to Sarapiqui!

I came to the Sarapiqui Conservation Learning Center to do action based research as a part of a thesis . It turned into a program for kids and youth focusing on ICT and English skills for community development. I truly enjoyed working with these kids and teaching them computer skills and organizing discussions around issues such as poverty and human rights. We also had a lot of fun as we incorporated creative activities and sports too. These kids will always be in my heart, and it was hard to leave knowing that there are still so many needs in the community. The area is small and safe, and it gives one an excellent opportunity to interact with locals. The Rainforest is beautiful and Yazmin the assistant director is very supportive of the volunteers. I would highly recommend volunteering with kids and youth at SCLC, so go to Sarapiqui :)

What would you improve about this program?
It is true that no program is perfect. The SCLC could be improved by having an established program for short-term volunteers so their stay could be more meaningful for them and more beneficial the local community. This is however something they started working on as I left.
