What are the jobs like:

English teaching jobs are typically at private language institutes with students paying private tuition to learn a language by a native English speaker in a 100% English immersion classroom (you don't need to speak another language). Your English language students are typically adults in Europe and Latin America and either children or adults in Asia and the Middle East.

Your day at work: You typically teach 5 classes a day for 45-50 minutes, 5 days a week. There are anywhere from 5 to 50 English teachers at each language school so you will have lots of new friends to make. Most cities will have anywhere from 500 to 5000 other English teachers like you.

Wages: Most industrialized countries you get paid a middle class wage to support yourself, pay your bills and break even (just like teachers in America), many Asian countries teachers can save 30-50% more than the cost of living which can be up to an extra $ 12,000 to $ 15,000 in a year!

Helpful, but mostly you're on your own

Overall, though the International TEFL academy gave me advice and helpful information on schools and opportunities in Spain, almost all of the work was done by me. I found a way to apply for a visa because I had a boyfriend living in Spain, but otherwise most Americans simply have to stay illegally or find someone to sponsor them for a visa which is a long and difficult process, not to mention rare. However, if I ever need advice or assistance the TEFL Academy does what it can to provide me with information from past alumni that have traveled to Spain.
So far I've really enjoyed myself here-the nightlife is great! Drinks and finger food (called pinchos) are really cheap so you don't have to spend all you earn on going out. The food has a lot of garlic, bread and oil which does get a tad boring at times but if you're in a large city like Madrid you can find plenty of foreign food. I felt very safe-you have to be careful at night in the big cities but I found a shop to buy pepper spray and the Spanish community are very friendly and helpful in general. They don't speak a lot of English, however so you either have to be patient or have a little Spanish in your back pocket.
I would definitely do this again-it was hard to find work at first, especially in a crisis-ridden country like Spain but if you're persistent there is a lot of good paying english teaching jobs out there.
I didn't like my school so much-especially with children they expect you to teach them things that are unreasonable-you don't always see your kids very often and they only want to play games, so its hard to teach them advanced English, the most you can hope for is basic sentences. I've had great resources for teaching exams though, like the TOEFL and Cambridge books-they help a lot and keep the students focused. I wish I would've brought more books on English grammar because books are really expensive here, though. Maybe more clothes too, because those are really expensive as well-prepare to pay much more than you would in America. I wish someone would have told me how expensive things were so I would be prepared with an adequate wardrobe and possible more Spanish. I didn't really bring anything I didn't need-eveything has been put to good use.
My school didn't really prepare me to teach, more thew me in and expected I could swim-it was terrifying at first, but I got the handle of it though. My older students were very well behaved and loved to learn, as well as not being afraid to do some hard studying, but the young ones-horrible! No disciple-they were very used to getting what they wanted, it seems to me kids in Spain remain dependent on their parents longer than in America.
As much as I've had fun I don't think I want to keep teaching English-its an ok pastime but there's not much gratification, I will probably continue learning Spanish and study in Spain. Hope this helped!

Alumni Interviews

Meet Ryan Franco, International TEFL Academy-Spain alum

GO: Why did you choose the International TEFL Academy?

Ryan: The International TEFL academy had good prices and good reviews. It had the program that allowed me to complete it from Santa Barbara my final quarter, since I graduated one quarter early and the counselors were very helpful.

GO: How did the course prepare you for teaching abroad?

Ryan: I had a decent amount of teaching experience before this as a TA and Personal Trainer, but teaching English was a new topic. The TEFL course helped me brush up and review where I needed to. The preparation for abroad manual was very thorough and helped me a lot! The best way to learn is just throwing yourself into the classroom and going for it with the honest intention of doing well for yourself and your students.

GO: Describe your day to day activities as a teacher.

Ryan: Well, everyday was different. I flew to Madrid without a visa or an apartment. Getting up and running was a little challenging but once I did I managed to construct a very happy and successful life over there. I taught Mon-Thursday at my language school, "The English Group". Monday's and Weds were long, Tuesday's were average, and Thursdays I only had 2 classes. I also had a few private students which were awesome and I formed great relationships with them!

GO: How has this experience impacted your future?

Ryan: I have more confidence, assertiveness, resourcefulness, and overall a better self evaluation as a result of my trip. I moved there with one suitcase, and a child's level mastery of the language. I learned to live with close to no possessions, to speak the language, to adjust to a vibrant culture, and to dance until 7am regularly. I think everyone gains different things out of trips like this, but I got exactly what I wanted out of it and even more. I could go on and on, but if I could summarize my trip as briefly as possible I would put it as so: See for yourself!

GO: What is one piece of advice you would give to those thinking about pursuing a TEFL certificate?

Ryan: To just do it! People around the typical age to do this all have so much social pressure to get a job or to start a career. Quiet frankly, there is no better time to do something like this, it is socially acceptable to be broke, traveling really helps put things in perspective, it educates us, you meet so many interesting people, you find new stores of energy within yourself you never knew you had. It teaches you so much about yourself that you will never know unless you go for it!
