Barcelona, Spain's second largest city and the most cosmopolitan, is one of the most dynamic cities in Europe. Barcelona's architecture, art, and overall vibe is something that should be experienced. As a volunteer in the city, you will get to experience all the attractions of a typical tourist while also making a difference in the city.
Community Development: Even though Barcelona is a developed city, there are still parts that need work. As a volunteer working in community development, you will work on painting community centers, gardening projects, and restoring old paintings.
Teach Children: Spain has a relatively good education system, but it is true that children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds often don't have access to a good education. As a teacher, you will work in schools that cater to disadvantaged children and teach them math, science and English.
Animal Shelter: Like most cities, Barcelona has animal shelters which take in unwanted animals. As a volunteer, you will help in taking care of the animals, helping with administrative tasks, and helping find homes for the animals.
As a volunteer in Spain, you are recommended to be vaccinated for Hepatitis A & B. If you visit between November through April, you should also get an influenza shot. For more information, visit MD Travel Health.
Barcelona is a safe city for tourists to visit. However, like any other city, there is petty crime that tourists might encounter. It is important to be vigilant in crowded areas in the city and also the Metro.
