Teaching English in Cambodia

This was the most fulfilling thing I have done. The students really wanted to learn, coming to school even on public holiday. The students didn’t care that I was older, they would ask me to play and do all the things the others did. Skipping, playing hand ball, hopscotch, knuckle bones were all games we played. The students and staff made you always feel welcome and you were always included with break times, playing games as well as after school activities. You were always kept safe, from being collected at the airport, getting to school, or going out at night, they were always checking on your safety. The accomodation was in a central position, you could walk to shops or markets, and tour companies would collect you from the roadside.

What was your funniest moment?
The students would bring in different foods and ask me to join in their picnics. They would always give me the hottest chilli sauce and wait for my reaction, or the sour fruit they’ve picked off a native tree.
Pros
  • The children are amazing, wanting to learn.
  • The staff were all so friendly and helpful.
  • There was free time where you could go and explore.
Cons
  • I wish I stayed for 3 weeks not 2.
  • The program supervisor didn’t speak to you about how you went.

Teaching English in Cambodia

This is my second time volunteering via IVHQ. The first time was teaching English in Thailand and just now it was teaching English in Cambodia. The application process is very straightforward. IVHQ provides a good level of information to set you up. The volunteering was satisfying and I hope my little time helps makes an accumulative difference. The Cambodian people are so friendly and the country is great to visit.
A TEFL course beforehand would have been helpful with the older children’s classes.

What was your funniest moment?
Arts and crafts making paper gift boxes with 20 children. They’re all calling out teacher for either help, assistance or just being proud of their creation. It was a fun final lesson.
Pros
  • Making incremental differences to many children
  • Inspiring the older children that they have the possibility to achieve so much

Volunteering in Cambodia with IVHQ was one of the most meaningful experiences of my life.

I volunteered in Cambodia with IVHQ and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made.

From the beginning, IVHQ supported me every step of the way. They gave me clear info, helped me prepare everything, and answered all my questions super fast. I felt safe and ready before even arriving.

When I got to Cambodia, the local team welcomed me so warmly. They really cared and made sure I was okay throughout the whole time. I worked at a school with children from difficult backgrounds and some with special needs and I’ve rarely felt so much love in one place.

I was assigned to different classes, from kindergarten to grade 4. My tasks were varied: sometimes I supported the local teachers, other times I led short lessons myself. Often there was a bit of time to prepare, but a lot of the work required improvisation and creativity whether through games, songs or simple exercises. But don’t worry: there’s always someone around to support you, and your efforts are truly appreciated.

The accommodation was simple, but it had everything I needed. I had my own private room, which was a big plus and I’d definitely recommend the AC upgrade, especially because Cambodia can get really hot! The food was another highlight: three delicious meals a day, always fresh, local and full of flavour.

Every day brought something new. Some days were tough, but I learned so much about the world, about others, and about myself.

Thank you IVHQ and thank you to the amazing team in Cambodia. I’ll never forget this time and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a real and heartwarming volunteer experience.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be open, flexible, and bring a warm heart.
Things might not always go as planned and that’s totally okay. This experience is about learning, growing, and going with the flow. You don’t need teaching experience what really matters is that you’re willing to show up, try your best, and care.

Be kind and open with your heart. People will feel it and they’ll respond with love and trust. Especially the kids. They can feel if you’re truly there for them, and they’ll give that love right back through hugs, smiles, and so much joy.

Just be yourself, be present, and let the experience touch you.
And a small tip: if it’s hot season, go for the AC upgrade. It helps a lot!
Pros
  • Very friendly local team and lovely kids
  • You learn a lot about the culture and yourself
  • Private room possible and tasty local food (3 meals a day)
Cons
  • You need to be creative and plan lessons yourself
  • It’s very hot – AC is helpful
  • Simple living conditions, not like at home

What a Wonderful and Fulfilling Experience

My experience was absolutely wonderful! From the start, IVHQ took care of everything and was very present, including several emails to keep us informed and updated about our placement and making sure we were legible to go after doing an online training. Once we arrived at destination, emails followed to make sure we were safe and comfortable. Concerning the Local Team I interacted with, they were just as attentive and were super welcoming and friendly. The great organization of IVVQ definitely made my experience smoother and enjoyable. About my experience in itself, it was wonderful. From the people I met, to the school I worked with, to the food, and the landscapes-- it was all memorable.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
I would suggest going with an open mind. Signing up for this experience already means that you probably have an open mind, but it’s worth thinking about it twice. You should not go abroad if you plan to compare your culture with theirs, determine whether what they do is effective, or judge whether they have the right priorities. You should start with a blank page and immerse yourself in a new culture: food, clothing, behavior, and more.
Pros
  • The kindness of the people
  • The safety of the place
  • The independence and insights you gain
Cons

Another great experience with ivhq

Another great experience with ivhq. My assignment was changed due to a local holiday but new arrangements were found for me. This actually allowed me to spend time in 2 locations and meet more volunteers and locals over the course of my 5 weeks in cambodia. The first three weeks were spent teaching English at an ngo school and my last two weeks were at a special education school. Both were great programs and experiences. With 5 weeks I had plenty of time to explore the areas I was in and have a weekend at the beach!

What was your funniest moment?
Participating in khmer new year by getting drenched with water guns, hoses and buckets of water in the streets
Pros
  • New friends
  • Experience new places
  • Getting to know locals
Cons
  • Not many volunteers but they're working on increasing the numbers that fell because of covid

An Amazing Experience

I taught English in Cambodia for 3 weeks and it was an amazing experience! The staff was well mannered and very helpful. They did everything in their power to make sure the trip went smooth with no bumps along the way. The food was amazing and the school was as well! The living space was clean and overall it was incredible. I tried new food, met new friends, and explored new places that I will take with me for the rest of my life. I would recommend using IVHQ for volunteering abroad, as I will be using them again as well.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I ate crickets and beetles! It was not a part of the program, but while you are abroad you must try new and interesting food that the locals eat!
Pros
  • A new experience
  • They taste like chips or peanuts
  • Something to remember
Cons
  • None

I recommend it

It was my first time volunteering, so I felt a bit nervous at first. But the program was well organised and the staff were kind and great. They made it easy for me to know what to expect and what to bring, and gave good tips specific to where I was going.
I felt safe throughout my entire solo trip. The local staff checked up on me often to hear if I was okay and if I was settling in the new environment. He gave me good tips on how to stay safe and secure in the city. He showed me around the city and also gave me recommendations on where I could go sightseeing during the weekends.

Go with an open heart and come home with great experiences.

Pros
  • Kind people
  • Special city
  • Cheap
Cons
  • Busy city
  • Trafics

IVHQ deserve our trust!

IVHQ and Cambodia's local team answer fast to my questions. I received excellent service and once I was in Kampuchea, I never felt let down.

My experience was more interesting than I imagined! I left Canada to travel alone, and throughout my stay I shared wonderful and unique moments with the other volunteers and with the Khmer people in my placement.

At the accomodation, having little autonomy over food and laundry was a constraint for me. Otherwise, I loved where I was placed! Les Restaurants des Enfants (LRDE) allowed me to visit the places where the children who come to eat live. LRDE's Khmer staff and volunteers answered all my questions about the children's plight, as well as how the organization support these children for a long term result.

Pros
  • Khmer people are so kind and sociable
  • The adaptation was very easy! It doesn't take long to feel at home!
  • The local staff answer fast for advices and problems encountered.
Cons
  • The food of the accommodation lack of diversity.
  • We cannot expect to visit a lot of thing outside the city of the accomodation unless we have a lot of weekends.
  • For me, food and laundry were a bit of a constraint, as we had little autonomy over them.

Questions & Answers

No not at all :) - the only language requirement for all of the IVHQ programs is being able to speak English. But in saying that, it is great to learn bits and pieces if you can, I really struggled but it didn't inhibit my trip and everyone was grateful if you tried and extremely helpful :)
