COMMUNITY REVIEWS SUMMARY

Volunteers praise the program’s strong local support, safe placements, and meaningful teaching and childcare roles.

Consider your impact: Volunteering abroad can be a rewarding experience for both volunteers and local communities, and at Go Overseas, we believe all volunteers should have the resources to make informed decisions about the type of volunteer project they want to partake in. However, despite best intentions, some organizations offering placements in orphanages may unknowingly place children in danger. Many children grow up with very little, but by using sport as an outlet for fun and competition, they gain skills and coordination while enjoying themselves at the same time. An Unforgettable and Rewarding Journey with IVHQ

My experience volunteering in Kenya through IVHQ was truly lifechanging. From start to finish, the program felt safe, well organised, and reliable, which made it easy to focus on the meaningful work I was doing in childcare. Supporting and connecting with the children every day was incredibly rewarding, and it opened my eyes to new perspectives and cultures. The local team was supportive and always available if I needed help, which made me feel comfortable and secure throughout the trip. Overall, IVHQ provided an unforgettable experience that not only allowed me to give back but also helped me grow personally in ways I never expected.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
The most nerve racking part of the experience was arriving in a completely new country and not knowing exactly what to expect, especially when it came to meeting new people and adjusting to a different environment. At first, it felt overwhelming being so far from home, but I overcame it by staying open minded and reminding myself why I chose to volunteer in the first place. The support from the IVHQ team and the other volunteers also made a huge difference, as everyone was welcoming and understanding. As the days went on, I became more confident, settled into a routine, and started to feel comfortable, turning what was once nerve racking into one of the most rewarding parts of the trip.
Pros
  • Gained meaningful connections with the children and community.
  • Well organised and felt safe throughout the trip.
  • Personal growth and new cultural experiences.
Cons
  • Different living conditions
  • Saying goodbye when it was time to leave
  • Initial culture shock and nerves at the start.

Safe

This was an emotional and eye opening experience. I am very glad I done this even for a short time. The local team Made me feel safe and catered to any needs we had . I was made to feel so welcomed at our home stay and celeine was amazing and so kind . The social scene wasn’t the best as I was the only volunteer doing the childcare program therefore would have been doing it myself but luckily a women in another program changed . I wish I had been told this prior to coming and I would have changed the dates or changed program .

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The contrast between the slums and the awful living conditions some children and families are living in compared to people that go to the mall everyday
Pros
  • Eye opening experience
  • Felt safe with local team
  • Learned new skills

IVHQ Namibia

IVHQ helped prepare me for my volunteer trip to Namibia and was available for any questions or concerns I had before and during my trip! I highly recommend using them on a trip like this as everything went smoothly and I felt very safe and prepared going into the project! Be prepared to get your hands dirty and to learn lots while on this trip! They do provide you with a uniform. Remember it’s Africa so it’s hot and you’re in nature so there will be bugs. This is a life changing adventure!!!!!!!

Volunteering at Positive Life Kenya

Volunteering with International Volunteer HQ alongside the incredible team at my placement in Kenya has been one of the most humbling and grounding experiences of my life. I arrived thinking I was coming to give time, energy, skills, support. What I didn’t expect was how much I would receive in return. Every day here has been a reminder of the power of dignity, resilience, and community. I have witnessed strength that doesn’t shout, hope that doesn’t give up, and kindness that shows up even when resources are limited. The people at the women's education placement lead with heart, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others not just for today, but for generations to come. This experience has slowed me down in the best possible way. It has invited me to listen more deeply, to be present, and to remember that real impact starts with human connection. The smiles, the conversations, the shared moments they stay with you. They change you. I am deeply grateful to IVHQ for creating a bridge that allows volunteers like me to step into meaningful, respectful, community-led work. And I am endlessly thankful to my placement in Kenya for welcoming me with open arms and trusting me to be part of their story, even for a short time. This is not a trip I will “return from” unchanged. It is an experience I will carry forward into my work, my relationships, and how I show up in the world. Thank you for reminding me that service is not about saving, it’s about standing beside, learning together, and honoring the shared humanity that connects us all.

Amazing Kenya

The details and background on accommodation etc was spot on. I have been kept safe and fed and the excursions were the icing on the cake. Three weeks was perfect time for me.

I enjoyed being a part of the school and giving then a fresh look by painting the 9 classrooms ready for the kids return in 2026. The kids and teachers were just so welcoming and we were involved as soon as we arrived. Teaching new songs and playing games was so much fun. Very humbling. It allowed me to really understand the difference in our countries. I felt so grateful for this experience
