Many children grow up with very little, but by using sport as an outlet for fun and competition, they gain skills and coordination while enjoying themselves at the same time. My Experience Volunteering in Kenya

My experience volunteering in Kenya was the best I’ve ever had and I don’t think it would have been as incredible if not for the program and the local team. I felt safe at all times and like I always had someone to call or reach out to if I needed to. I made some friends from around the world and got to experience living like a Kenyan local. I mostly enjoyed going to the markets and picking our produce and driving around on motorbikes and matatus, which are the main forms of transport. The kids were the sweetest things and they were so excited to see us everyday. They, along with the rest of the locals, are so fascinated with volunteers that look different from themselves. I really felt like I was living in a completely different culture and it was incredible. I would definitely recommend for anyone who wants to get out of their comfort zone and do something to help others. It was a bit pricey, but considering what I got out of it, I will definitely be traveling again through this organization! Also, I would definitely recommend going for AT LEAST three weeks. Two weeks will not be enough!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
We went and visited the Maasai village as part of the safari experience and I decided to completely envelope myself in the culture and got branded. I got a permanent burn mark on my arm for a constant reminder of the incredible experience I had.
Pros
  • Making friends from around the world
  • Living like a local
  • Helping out in the schools
Cons
  • A bit pricey

Incredible experience

Incredible experience from start to finish, I don’t have just one word to explain my trip to Kenya. But what I can say is that it was truly life changing in so many ways.

I have made friends for life, and had experiences that I’ll never be able to forget.

The entire process is planned perfectly, I always felt safe and received prompt responses to any question's I had. My host family in Kenya were incredible and for the cost of my entire trip I couldn’t believe how packed full of adventure it was. I loved every minute and can’t wait for my next adventure with IVHQ!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
Absolutely nothing. This programme became not only everything I imagined but more. It was a fantastic and eye opening experience throughout
Pros
  • Insight into how people live in poorer areas in Kenya
  • Insight to the education system in Kenya
  • Made many new friend
Cons
  • Didn’t stay long enough, 2 weeks simply isn’t long enough

IVHQ - Kenya

IVHQ does an amazing job at preparing you for your trip. My program coordinator, Marissa, always answered my questions, no matter how silly I though they were. She was incredibly helpful and it was clear she wanted me to have a trip of a lifetime!
I went to Kenya for one month and volunteered at a school in their Special Needs unit. The staff at the school were so kind and welcoming. The kids were so much fun to be around, they were so excited to show me their favourite games and share their culture with me! My host parents were so kind and welcoming and I had 3 host siblings who were such a joy to be around. I definitely cried when I had to leave them.
IVHQ was able to give me one of the most memorable experiences! If you're thinking about it, just do it!! You'll regret not taking this opportunity.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Be open minded and allow yourself to be immersed in your surroundings. There definitely is a culture shock and you're going to feel very out of place. That being said, people are very welcoming and love when you're trying to learn about their culture. For my program, we had to take a tuk tuk to and from school everyday. The shock and appreciation most of the tuk tuk drivers had when you tried to talk to them in Swahili was so amazing. You could tell they surprised but loved the effort. So just be engaged with the community and the people you get to interact with and I promise you'll have the most amazing memories.
Something else I'd HIGHLY recommend is to bring a journal, or just write in your notes app. Keep track of the things you did, the interactions you had with people, the funny moments and anything else that comes up. I did this, and now I have a book full of silly drawings from the kids I worked with, the funniest moments from my trip, and memories I'll always keep close to my heart.
Finally, keep in mind this is a chance to step outside of your comfort zone. Sure it's going to be difficult but you're half way there by thinking of booking this trip. You're going to have ups and downs and have to overcome challenges, but I can promise you that you'll regret not taking this opportunity. I grew so much over the month that I was gone, and I learned a lot about myself and the world around me.
Pros
  • Met the most amazing people
  • Had an authentic experience with Kenyan culture
  • Push outside of your comfort zone and a chance to grow

If I Had Only Known…

It was a long flight from Los Angeles to Nairobi, Kenya. I didn’t notice. I was too excited.
Thanks to IVHQ, I was going to live and teach in the Maasai community. What an opportunity to immerse myself in this beautiful culture.
I arrived early but it was soon Saturday- Orientation Day. The other volunteers arrived from all over the world. Everyone was so kind and caring. Did IVHQ just attract the nicest people, I wondered?
There were just two of us going to Maasailand. We left for our new ‘home’ for two weeks. We drove down a very bumpy road to Ngong and then further to a rural area. It was quietly beautiful. A family of four greeted us along with a herd of very healthy looking goats.
The next two weeks we’re full of wonder. My lovely roommate and I had each other to go through all the experiences. Primitive living. No running water in the house. No heating. And the ‘toilet shed’ was several yards from the house. My head flashlight was a blessing!
Sundays were Church days. Monday through Friday I was teaching in a school on Ngong.
I cannot tell you in a few words what an extraordinary time I had. Joyful and challenging.
Fifty children in the class of 6-7 year olds. Room for 30. Such a fine teacher. Smart and clever. It took no more than a few minutes to love the children. We had such a good time together.
I was able to contribute to their school supplies; exercise books, pencils, crayons etc. and to buy some equipment for their sports days on Fridays.
I was so difficult to leave them. Time and tears!
IVHQ made me feel completely supported all the time. Their Kenyan team was at the other end of the phone if you needed and they drove us to various events. Viv a vis The Outreach Program. A wonderful two days of learning and fun! So much to share…..
I had the time of my life. If I had only known, I would have volunteered much sooner.
You will treasure your memories forever..as I shall.
Don’t wait. Follow your dreams and open your heart. The world is waiting!

It was an incredible experience

It was an incredible experience. Everything happend in a very good way and the contact with the local team was perfect. For a first experience, this way was so good to discover a new culture and everything about a country. In the school where I teach I was free to do and experiment everything I wanted. The experience was so better than I expect. I create a link with a lot of people that I will never forget for all my life. The contact with the organisation to plan this trip was also perfect with no problem, they answer all my questions.

Pros
  • teaching a class of children
  • create super-link with the childrens of the school
  • traveling around kenya
Cons
  • I would like to stay more
  • the price
  • i don't know at all it was so good

A chance to see a different world

Something my experience really helped me realize is the huge heterogeneity in ideas, opinions and perspectives people might identify themselves in depending on the social and historical context in which they grew up. I understood that in life it's very important to be able to resize one's own problems and to try to look at the bigger picture, contributing to the betterment of someone's situation.
This journey taught me to try to understand without judging, and I'm glad I had the opportunity to get to know myself in a completely new environment.

Pros
  • Helps you look at things from a different perspective
  • Gives you the opportunity to meet new and interesting people with whom you can share your experience
  • You immerge yourself in a different culture
Cons
  • It can be hard to accept that not everyone lives in the same world as you

The most beautiful experience of my life!

Volunteering is a life-changing experience, you will learn and experience a new culture, community, people, language and most important: you will create beautiful memories with amazing people while you make an impact. If you are a volunteering for the first time IVHQ is the best organization to do it with. They offer 24/7 guidance, a diverse variety of programs/countries and an amazing team that will guide you through the whole process. I joined the kindergarten and special needs program in Kenya for 3 weeks, I spent every day teaching and playing with the most lovable and kind kids. The teachers and volunteers at the school I was placed in became my family and the school my home away from home. If you are thinking about it do it, you will have the BEST time of your life!

Pros
  • Made friends that became family
  • Experienced a new beautiful culture that taught me new things
  • Find happiness
Cons
  • None
