Volunteer in Peru with IVHQ

This is a unique volunteering project in that your contribution as a volunteer is three-fold: your volunteering assists with construction and renovation tasks, your fees help to pay for materials, and the end product can then be used to host other important community projects. Volunteers help local building projects that would otherwise not be completed, lending time and funds to see them through to completion. Construction & Renovation

The trip of a lifetime

I have volunteered with IVHQ twice now, and been partnered with Maximo Nivel on both occasions (first Costa Rica, and most recently Peru). In both instances, I was so overcome with anxiety leading up to the experience because it was my first time in each country and I was traveling alone. That said, IVHQ was so helpful in easing my anxiety. They gave me plenty of information ranging from what to pack to transportation to everything in between. And in the end, those two trips ended up being my most impactful and memorable adventures yet.

Pros
  • There were a lot of other solo travelers in my homestay which made every day fun.
  • Volunteering at the local zoo was such a unique and exciting experience!
  • Cusco is a beautiful city with great food and lots to do.
Cons
  • At times, the language barrier between the project's staff and volunteers was tough.
  • I think the project could benefit from more structuring so volunteers can maximize their time.
  • I had too much fun and made a ton of friends so I was sad to leave, if that counts as a con?

A Safe and Rewarding Experience!

The company does a fantastic job at making you feel comfortable and safe the moment you leave for the airport to the moment you return home. There is support 24/7 and anytime I had questions, they were quick to be answered. The experience itself was life-changing in the sense that I was able to gain new cultural perspectives as well as new friendships. There is a lot of growth that can happen on these trips and I am so glad I found an organization like IVHQ to help me push myself outside of my comfort zone.

Thank you!!

It was an unique experience, everything was perfect. The service of the team, I felt so safe thanks to them. The kindness of everyone. The family where I was staying, I love them so much and already miss them! They were so kind with me, on e day I was sick and they took care of me as If I was their daughter, they always looked after me
Also the food was amazing which is an important point when you travel somewhere!
And the program with the guide wasn’t the easiest because it took a lot of energy, but you learn how to be patient, and you give love and it is giving back to you 🙏🏼❤️

Thank you for everything🤍

Animal Care in Cusco

I spent two rewarding weeks in Cusco, Peru, volunteering in a zoo and in a dog shelter. The IVHQ staff made sure that I was well taken care of my the local host organization. I highly recommend IVHQ! The organizations that I helped rely on volunteers to fill the gaps in staffing. If you are an animal lover, yo will love this experience! The dogs in the shelter were all so sweet and I wanted to bring them all home with me. My host family was so kind, and my Spanish improved by talking with them. Great experience!

Best way to immerse yourself in a community

If you’ve got only a week to spend in Cusco and want to really be on the ground, there’s no better way than to volunteer with IVHQ. Their program gives you the opportunity to interact and be part of a community while being completely hands on. That said, there leaves time everyday to explore the city, see the sights and interact with others (even learn Spanish!) No regrets and will 100% recommend this experience to others.

This is also the perfect programme if you’re patient with kids and want to make a meaningful connection with the community.

It's also a good chance to really get to explore Cusco on foot, with hostels within the city that are well connected and great!

Early retired and travelling solo

Having early retired it has always been an ambition of mine to volunteer abroad. The whole experience was life changing. From the moment I got off the plane there was someone there to take me to my accommodation. Throughout the programme there was always someone to answer any questions and give support if needed, I never felt alone. My skills were tailored to the Community work I got involved in and it was truly rewarding, an experience I will never forget. Don't be put off by age, its just a number, take that leap of faith and take that trip! you won't regret it. IVHQ were amazing and I cannot recommend them enough.

Pros
  • Life changing experience
  • Learning about other cultures
  • Giving something back

Dental volunteering in Peru

This was the best experience I have ever done in my life, the host families house I stayed at was so wholesome, everyone was so kind and everyone you’re living with is in the same boat as they are all volunteers or there to learn spanish, it was my first experience in a shared house and it was the best, the volunteer work was really educational, opened my eyes to dentistry in another country and it was something i would recommend any dental professional to do and get that experience . I would do it all over again if i could and i would have stayed for much longer too

Pros
  • Meet new people
  • Trying new food
  • Feeling like you have achieved something
Cons
  • Couldnt do a lot at the dental clinic due to my lack of spanish
  • 1 week was not long enough
  • Altitude was worse than i thought

Questions & Answers

Yeah! I actually got there earlier than the program started and went out in Lima on my own. During the program, yes we went out to different bars/discotecas. During the week, however, we had a curfew of 11pm.

There was a wide range of ages! I think you have to be 18 to do this program, and we had 18 year olds, people in their 20s, and we had one or two people in their late 20s/early 30s.

Yes, we can accommodate families on our volunteer programs and our local team can make arrangements to ensure you are accommodated and placed on a project together. To apply to volunteer abroad as a family, one person needs to complete the application process first and select ‘Yes’ to the question ‘Will you be volunteering with a friend, family member or group?’ within the application form. Hi Laurie, according to the IVHQ website, "Volunteers in Lima are accommodated with other volunteers, in either avolunteer house run by a the local coordinator's family or in a homestay." "Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner)." I did an IVHQ program myself and both of those were included in the program.
