About Program

Join Global Volunteers in the volunteer experience of a lifetime in St. Lucia, one of the most beautiful islands in the West Indies - for one to two weeks. As a volunteer, you will make a substantial difference in a small amount of time.

The ways volunteers serve as a resource include:
• Tutoring at the infant and primary schools working with reading, colors and shapes, group activities, and school outings.
• Building and maintenance of school facilities.
• Training youth on employable skills.
• Earthboxes: help community members plant and maintain container vegetable gardens that provide needed nutrition and micronutrients to area families.
• Swimming Lessons: skilled volunteers are needed to teach area children how to swim. This lifesaving skill is critical for island residents.
• Sewing: teach area mothers how to create dresses, shirts and other clothing items.

My Experience in Anse La Raye

My stay in Anse La Raye was memorable. I still think of the children I worked with at the Infant School with delight. They want to learn and the school was so prepared for us I feel we did make a difference in just the week we were there. The pride they have in their country was evident. The celebration of their Nobel Award Winners was moving. The children were singing their hearts out with joy. Excellence and Discipline were evident.
The village people were so open and easy to talk with. I enjoyed my walks around talking with and watching the fishermen and others. A special treat was working with a small of group of women in the evenings learning to sew, making and using patterns. Chemida’s, “OK. Let’s go.” After giving an instruction still rings in my head.
The beauty of the island is spectacular. I learned so much and enjoyed every minute in Soufriere’s botanical garden. St. Lucia is the only Windward Island named after a woman. Is it because of Petit and Gros Pitons? She's the Helen of the Windward Islands.
I hope to return if time and resources allow me.

What would you improve about this program?
It would be wonderful if there could be found a place in the village where volunteers could live while they are there; more interaction with the villagers. JJ's was lovely, but interactions were mostly with the staff.

Great experience in St Lucia with Global Volunteers

My husband and I recently spent 2 weeks in St. Lucia with Global Volunteers. It was a fun and rewarding experience! Our group of 10 was led by a well-organized and caring leader who was always going it of her way to make sure we were happy and comfortable. My responsibilities included working at a preschool in the mornings and teaching women how to sew in the afternoons. I loved seeing the proud faces on the women when they completed a project. I hope that someday they’ll be able to use their skills to make an income. We’ll definitely do Global Volunteers again!

What would you improve about this program?
I really can’t think of a way to improve the program.

Global Volunteers -- St. Lucia

The experience was transformative on so many levels. The level of poverty hit me in the face the first day of service, but I was also blown away by the people I met... Our guide Chemida was compassionate, strong, and extremely knowledgeable. The teachers at our school where we worked were resilient and resourceful, doing so much with so little. But who impressed me the most were the children at the school where we volunteered, especially one particular child, Carlos. He was only four yet could read at the 3rd or 4th grade level. Yet he struggled with his behavior. I hope the extra attention I gave him helped to reassure him and encourage him to pursue his academic progress.

Overall, the experience was wonderful. I cannot say enough about how well organized our two weeks were, and the food was next-level delicious. There wasn't a day that I didn't clean my plate.

If you want to make a difference in a place where the beauty of the island, the riches of the resorts stand in such stark contrast to the people who are poor but resilient -- I highly recommend this program to you. Truly an inforgettable experience.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish that the schools utilized us more... Sometimes I felt extraneous.

Please see my comments

I have been on 4 GV programs. I think this is an excellent organization. I am hoping to join GV next year on the ST. Lucia project.I have enjoyed myself immensely on each trip. The food was excellent, the staff could not have been better, I felt safe and the community in each country was welcoming. I had a roommate for two of the trips after the passing of my husband who was always with me and my friendship with them has endured. Cost is appropriate. The work is rewarding, the children were wonderful, and I can't wait to return.

Leaving A Mark On The World

I looked forward to each and every day! It was such a wonderful experience to work with a inspiring teacher daily in helping second grade boys primarily with language and math. It wasn't easy! Children at this age are distracted from lessons, but to have a youngster respond with a smile when they give the right answer to a question about a fraction or read well was a thrill for me as a volunteer tutor. I miss the children very much and hope that I helped them in their educational progress. I also looked forward each evening to hearing what other Global Volunteers did each day in education, health care, building and other areas of service with the community.
I can without any reservations strongly urge folks to go with Global Volunteers to St. Lucia. It is an experience I will always remember and treasure!!!!
