Overall I had a fantastic experience whilst partaking in this internship. Most obviously is the fact that I learnt so much within my field of interest, media post-production, and would say that in that respect the internship was invaluable. The city of Wellington provided a fun, friendly and exciting backdrop to my placement and I was never bored or unhappy living in such a great place. The accommodation was very nice and fantastically located, though I would have to say I was not very happy with the fact that it was expected of the interns to share bedrooms, with there even being a be in the kitchen area for when there was a large influx of interns. One would assume that the high cost of the internship would allow for individual bedrooms at least. But other than that I had absolutely no complaints about the experience and would happily recommend it to others.

Taking an internship in Florence Italy is definitely a wonderful opportunity ! It is so beautiful here, and learning the language is definitely easier when you are surrounded by people who speak it all the time. Florence is a safe fun place with many options on things to do. If you decide to take an internship in Florence you will be satisfied.

The most important thing to me was the communication. My emails and phone calls were always answered the day of or the following day. This enabled me to get all my questions answered and I felt completely prepared when I left for the airport. The only thing I would have liked to see a change was the housing. I appreciated that I was with other students, but our rent was higher than some other american students we met. Other than that everything was great. They kept up on how I was doing before, during, and after my internship. World Internships also provided airport pick up which was very helpful when going to a new country. Some of my roommates went through a different organization and they were not offered the same benefit. It was an overall great and positive experience.

Go Overseas recently caught up with World Internships' Program Advisor Christopher Clark. Christopher Clark is mid-twenty-something recent graduate from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts where he focused in political theory, philosophy, and critical legal studies. He currently lives in Northampton, MA with his partner, Allie, where you can find him at local used bookstores and coffee shops. He is deeply committed to social justice principles and is interested in constructing discussions and communities around the intersections of these various ideologies.
Christopher adopted an unmatched eagerness for travel at an early age and took to traveling the United States by car during long cross-country road trips, living in Santa Barbara for a short period, and making friends in many cities dotting each coast. He spent a semester away from Hampshire College to conduct his own self-designed independent research in Palestine -- an experience that continues to mold his writing on political theory and critical visual studies. Christopher is an avid traveler -- quick to answer what his top 5 next destinations could be -- and is eager to talk with other people who share the same passion.
Go Overseas: What position do you hold at World Internships? What has your career path been like so far?
Christopher: I am currently the Program Advisor at World Internships. Once students have chosen their destination country of choice, decided on their internship field of choice, and completed their application-- I begin working closely with each student; coordinating the internship search and other program elements with our on-site coordinators, ensuring the student is prepared for their trip and also checking in with the student during the program and upon re-entry. A multi-faceted process of interaction, certainly! I dutifully try to keep the World Internships Facebook page lively and engaging. In between those various responsibilities, I also work with the Director, Christine Adamission, to develop new programs while continuing to ensure our current programs are the best they can possibly be.
My career path has been long and winding. For many years, I took on all sorts of banal part-time positions in order to pay for my wanderlust. There were two positions in particular that I walked out on in order to pursue my dreams of traveling the country, believe it or not! I was young and in love with travel. While attending Hampshire College in Massachusetts, nearly the only place that I was stationary in for more than one year, I worked in the Admissions office as a student tour guide and interviewer for prospective students. After returning from a semester of research in Palestine for my thesis, I spent my last semester working more closely with the transfer student community. After graduating in May of this year, I took this current position at World Internships -- a position which stokes my wanderlust and allows me to work directly with folks interested in enacting the very same thing.
Go Overseas: What are the core principles World Internships strives to achieve?
Christopher: World Internships' core principles are simple and straight-forward: affordability, individual attention to each application, customized internship placements, and attempts at cultural integration. We strongly believe in the idea that if we just stick to our basic core principles, we will be offering the best possible program(s) we can. Our entire team is invested in making sure our programs offer the opportunity to enhance an individual's professional experience in their field while simultaneously providing contextual perspectives into a country's cultural character via immersion activities & language courses.
It is somewhat of a personal mission of mine to see that our applicants are devoting themselves to their internship and at the same time, experiencing life in, let's say, Cuernavaca more intimately than by reading about it on Wikipedia. By including social activities in our internship programs, we guarantee that students will get the best of both worlds -- professional experience to enhance their career futures in addition to meaningful interactions with local cultural norms. Learning in a hands-on international environment, we believe shapes individuals into more knowledgeable and engaged world citizens.
Go Overseas: What separates World Internships from other internship providers?
Christopher: Similar to what I stated above regarding our core principles, we have been deeply intentional about setting ourselves apart from other internship abroad and even study abroad organizations in a myriad of ways. World Internships has committed to working one-on-one with every applicant to ensure a personable experience during the entire placement process. Whether we are speaking with them directly or our on-site coordinator is sending them news about their prospective host companies, we always promise clear and concise communication with each and every applicant.
Being able to customize nearly all aspects of every program really sets us apart from the pack as well. Due to the relationships we have with our teams abroad, our staff can add or drop many parts of the program so that it fits exactly what the applicant is looking for. In tandem with our flexible start dates for most programs, this means no program is ever really identical to another. Lastly, World Internships wants every applicant to know that we take their wants and needs seriously, therefore, we guarantee internship placement in the individual's field of choice. I'd say that's a world-class opportunity for anyone who wants to travel AND gain workplace experience!
Go Overseas: What does the future hold for World Internships?
Christopher: We can say with all honesty: the future looks big and bright for World Internships! Some of our goals are to develop new programs in other key destinations, expand our career resources for students both prior to departure and once they get back home with all their new knowledge, while continuing on our path of remaining a personable company. We also aim to increase cultural engagement in some of our existing destinations and provide students with more local tips so they can pave their own path instead of following a travel guide. Another goal of ours for the future is to increase our programs in Europe, South America, and Canada to meet the needs of our students around the world! Even though we've just celebrated our one year, World Internships is just getting started, and as we continue to grow, our core principles will always stay the same.

While in Ecuador, I worked with indigenous tea farmers around the jungle town of Tena.
My internship was incredible. Not only was I in the Amazon Rainforest, but I was constantly forced to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. I tried new foods, spoke in different languages, and most importantly, learned how to interact in a different society. That's the beauty of an interning abroad - you get the same technical experience, but you also get that added bonus of interacting and learning from people, communities, and situations that you wouldn't normally have here in the States.
Interning abroad helped me grow tremendously. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested.
