Back-Office Internship in Riviera Maya

I completed a four-month internship with WWI. They found me a placement in Secrets Capri Riviera Cancun and I was very happy with my position. I worked as an assistant to the Quality Control Manager with the work generally consisting of computer based tasks. The manager I worked with was great and made me feel very welcome to the office team. I learned a lot of back office operations in the hotel, something which was a new thing for me. I worked six days a week having Sundays off.

Here are some tips that I would like to leave for future candidates who are considering an internship in Secrets Capri:

Accomodation is provided though be prepared that rooms are plain and old and there is no wifi or other source of Internet available. You are also most likely to share a room with 1-2 other people (which isn´t neccessarily a bad thing!).

Learn Spanish before hand. The work you are most likely to do is in English but please be aware that only a few collegues speak English and most of the hotel staff don´t speak any English. You´ll get more out from your time in Mexico if you learn as much Spanish as possible before arriving so you can mingle with everyone. Everyone in Secrets Capri are extremely friendly so you have no trouble finding opportunities to practice your Spanish! I did only a basic beginners course of Spanish before I arrived and I found it wasn´t enough.

I had a great time in Secrets Capri and Playa del Carmen is definitely a great place to stay. There is so much to do and see that you won´t have trouble finding something to do on your days off!

What would you improve about this program?
Emphasise and/or encourage interns to learn Spanish before arriving would be helpfull. More active communication from the agency before arriving.

An experience well worth the sacrifice!

I went to this internship with another collague of mine, both of us arranged crosstraining internship trough several departments. My collegue was for a month in F&B as room service attendant which was really exsausting and he didn't have a chance to learn a lot, however he was noticed by the management and they respected their deal which was made on the begining; and after one month transfered him to the reservations department and now he is really learning and is satisfied. As per me, I am at front office (including reception, telephone operator and concierge). I will stay here one more month cause the computer system and all FO duties are too wide and complex to be handeled in one month period. I am happy in this department but at the begening I didn't have an assigned trainer so my learning procces was longer simply because my collegues didn't have time (due to high occupancy of 90+ %) to show me everything slowly.Right now, both of us are working equally as other staff members so I can say we are appriciated here. All the managment and the staff are really welcoming and helpful so we feel comfortable. Basically everything is great except the accomodation! We were extremy surprised when we saw where we will be staying.. We are living at the boundries of Dubai in Dubai Investment Park, 45 min-1 hour away from the hotel. Living conditions are bad, 4 people in a small room, only one bathroom on the floor that is used by 50 people. Everythig very old, water is boiling hot, and in both of our cases, bathroom is cca 50 meters away. However, as soon as we report a problem, our management is working really hard towards fixing it. So all in all, all compliments to the Ramada Downtown Hotel people but the accomodation is simply horrible. Now, like all the staff, we are use to it but maybe this should be mentioned before. All in all this is an experience that will determine my career and in the future can bring me only positive benifits! After finishing university, this internship was the best decision that I have made, no matter how hard and challenging it sometimes is!

What would you improve about this program?
Simply giving better information about the accomodation cause in my case, it showed to be a big dissapointment. Maybe some people would even give up if they were offered to live here. But every company, different accomodation.
Response from Worldwide Internship

Hi Marija, we appreciate your honest review. Your comments are really important to help us improve the experience of next students coming to the UAE. We talked to the GM of the hotel confirmed that they have the same living conditions for everyone and have plans of providing better living conditions for all staff.

On our side, please receive our sincere apologies, unfortunately it is something we can´t control.

We’re really happy that even with this matters, you’re having a great professional experience in Dubai.

Great Opportunities!

For those looking for new job opportunities, or those who need a change in their current professional career, London is the city. I needed a change a in my actual career but also a great experience where I could grow professionally, where I could face daily challenges and learn the most out of it.
I was looking for an internship position in the hospitality industry, when World Wide Internship came into place. They offered me the possibility to move abroad, find me a great hotel in the heart of the city centre and they assisted me with the accommodation. I am really happy how they helped me through all the process until we found a suitable position for me.
The most difficult part was finding a not too expensive accommodation close to the Hotel. The city centre is really expensive and the options through the agency are not as wide as one would liked to be. Anyways, I am really thankful to them because they never gave up looking after me until I found a suitable place to stay.
This is a great experience, full of new challenges, new places to discover and whole new culture to live!

Amaizing experience

Before to start my internship in China I had a lot of doubts about this country. It was been amazing for me discover this wonderful country, my integration in the chines' environment was very fast and I do a lot of friends (local and foreign). In my work the conditions was been very professional and the staff was been very nice.
It is important to mention that my biggest problem in china was been the communication because most part of Chinese people don't speak English, but always the people try to so its best to help you.
Definitely I recommend this kind of programs, nowadays I'm feeling very happy to have been part of this program.

What would you improve about this program?
Maybe more options in the business sector.

Great proffessional experience in the paradise of Riviera Maya

I spent 3 months working in the Quality Assurance Department in a 5 star resort, which highly interested me and therefore working towards improving the services became more than just a job.
My main duties were related to a project as part of the Guest Satisfaction program, with the level of responsibility assigned constantly increasing, which added value to my overall experience.
Overall, my internship was demanding and exciting, not only because I had the opportunity to work in a completely different environment and adapt to a new culture, but also because I was eager to learn, and challenged myself by accomplishing various tasks.

How has this experience impacted your future?

This experience has been beneficial for me from the get-go. This is also exactly the type of internship that I was looking for, one that doesn’t require full Spanish fluency, but allows me the opportunity to improve my Spanish. It has only been a month so far, but I can already feel that my Spanish has reached another level.

Professionally, I have learned so much more about the tourism industry in general. This knowledge will be extremely beneficial for me when I return to Vietnam to open my own hostel. Academically, this internship is the perfect place where I can apply what I have learned from my first year of MBA.

Describe your program socially and academically.

My internship program is structured so that interns work six days a week with a day off. Interns can eat lunch at work and the food is made by the hotel’s kitchen staff when they are working. The program does not have much of a social aspect, but interns have sufficient free time on their own to explore nearby attractions and places. I have also made many new friends from the hotel and other places.

On the weekend, I tend to go to nearby towns to explore all the beauty of Mexico. I am planning to visit Chichen Itza in the nearby future as well. Academically, every working day is another day of learning for me. The learning is geared towards the hospitality and tourism industry.

What did World Wide Internships do for you and what did you need to do on your own?

World Wide Internships (WWI) was mainly responsible for making the connection between me and the hotel that I am currently working at. I believe that was the most important and valuable thing that came from WWI. They also provided me with guideline on what things I should bring along for my trip. The rest of the planning needed to be done by me, from booking plane ticket, arranging temporary accommodation, inquiring about applicable visa, to arranging for transportation to my destination.

There was a slight miscommunication between me and the staff at WWI that resulted in some extra costs on my side. I wish that there were more than one person that I could contact at WWI or the WWI representative would be more responsive to my emails and messages in a timely manner.

Do you feel you got a chance to see the city from a local's perspective?

Yes, very much. Even though the company put me in a room in one of their hotels on a crowded tourist street, I still have plenty of chances to explore and see the city from a local’s perspective. I have travelled to Merida, which is further away from the popular tourist destinations.

I believe that Merida is a quaint town with lots of history and there are fewer tourists. The city is filled with Mexican culture and history. The food is also very delicious and there is a variety of cuisines to choose from. I have also been to Tulum, a small coastal town that has Mayan ruins and beautiful blue-sky ocean. Overall, travelling around in Mexico is fun and educational.

Zayra Duarte

Job Title
Placement Coordinator
My name is Zayra Duarte and I am the Placement Coordinator in Worldwide Internships. I studied International Relations with a specialty in Tourism at Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. I am 23 years old and I love to dance.

What language have you always wanted to learn and why?

Zayra: Language learning is really important for me because it gives me the opportunity to immerse into any culture in the world.

friends at Fundidora Park Monterrey Mexico

I found the cultural diversity as an opportunity to understand that we are not totally different from people who live in other countries and that we have similar thoughts, interests, hobbies, etc., and we can help each other to live in a better world.

What country have you always wanted to visit?

Zayra: The country that I have always wanted to visit is Germany because the culture is really interesting and progressive. Also the people are totally different from the stereotype we usually tend to have. Three years ago I had the opportunity to meet a German friend and he gave me an alternate perception. We’re definitely good friends now!

Describe a time when you felt especially proud to be part of the Worldwide Internship team.

Zayra: I felt especially proud to be part of the Worldwide Internships team because I have realized that these programs give the opportunity not only to give someone a professional experience but allows them to have a personal experience, too.

This holistic internship experience enables you to go beyond your comfort zone and develop personally and professionally more than you’ve ever imagined.

What changes would you make to the intern abroad industry?

Zayra: The changes I would make to the intern abroad industry would be to change the visa procedures. I think that most of the time people are nervous about it because all governments have a lot of restrictions. I think that it would be awesome if ALL the countries could be more open with this kind of situation and establish a specific kind of visa for the interns across the board.

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

Zayra: The best stories I have heard from return students have been when they finished their internships and as they did really well, the hotel or company gave them the opportunity to get a job. These kinds of stories make me feel so proud because it means that they could get a really good professional and personal experience and also that they contributed to the hotel or company to improve the way they work. It is amazing to hear from them that they are really happy with their experiences!
