How do you choose the school?

Question Details

Did you only look at the schools your study abroad office provided or did you do your own research as well?

Answer

When I was planning to go abroad, I looked for schools that had classes in my major/minor and electives that would teach me more about the culture. I'm a Sociology major with a minor in Gender Studies, so I looked for universities abroad that offered classes in both of those areas. I also wanted to learn either a language or learn about my host country's culture, so I also looked for universities that had classes like that. I ended up selecting the University of Limerick because it was in one of the countries I wanted to study in (Ireland), and had classes that fit all of those categories.

I talked to my study abroad office about schools we had exchange programs with. This meant that I just had to pay tuition as usual to study abroad, plus there were already lots of classes I could take which had already been approved by the head of my department.

It was also really helpful to talk to alumni who had lived in the countries I was considering to see if it was a good culture fit.

When I was preparing to go abroad, Grenoble School of Management was the only Business school. This made my choice easy. However, I was also looking at other cities and countries and narrowed down schools based on the courses and specializations that had, and I also checked to see if they were Accredited. There are certain schools that are recognized for what their concentration is. Similar to an Ivy League in the US.
