About Program

Spend your gap year abroad in Oman, home to one of the largest deserts in the world as well host to a beautiful but fragile tropical cloud forest. Over four weeks, BSES will lead camps through the harshest of conditions, trekking through relentless deserts and sleeping in dune systems under the unpolluted skies. Participants will then spend four weeks in the Dhofar Cloud Forests, which remain watered and sustained by the yearly monsoons that take the form of thick, misty clouds. Within this mystical environment, lucky adventurers can find Arabian leopards and possibly even turtles laying eggs on the beaches of the Arabian peninsula.

Much of the research conducted in the 2013 expedition will build upon the work of the 2012 travelers, so exact projects are not yet clear, but participants generally craft individual inquiries and use the vast region to carry out critical research.

Unique Experience with real science!

This expedition was in two parts - the first in the Empty Quarter we were camped deep in the desert with camels, sand foxes and scorpions for company. Amazing night skies, cooking on campfires, and camera trapping for mammals in the dunes.
The second half was in a coastal wadi exploring caves and pools for dragonflies, and the elusive Arabian Leopard. Brilliant company and real wilderness..
