About Program

Tales of the Sea is an academic, experiential course for curious and capable high-school students. The curriculum focuses on the close reading of college-level texts; on writing thesis-centered arguments; and on becoming an active crew member on the historic Grand Banks schooner, Roseway. Students sail from St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, to Boston, Massachusetts, on the ship’s annual transit north, learning seamanship, navigation, and the importance of community to the effective operation of an ocean-going vessel. At the same time, they read notable texts from the world of maritime literature, especially those pertaining to the age of sail, and practice interpretive, analytical writing in response to those readings. Earning a transferable credit from Proctor Academy.
