About Program

Atlantis is the largest and most reputable pre-health study abroad organization for US undergraduates. With shadowing experiences in Athens and more to come, our Greece programs are for those who love all things ABBA. What better way to gain 60+ clinical hours than in the country full of myths and legends! Students will shadow in top European hospitals with well-esteemed physicians and have the opportunity to explore the rich culture that their host city has to offer.

Finding different physicians to shadow can be difficult to find in the US, especially throughout the pandemic. Specialties such as surgery, cardiology, and OB/GYN can be even harder, especially if you don't live in big cities! With alumni in 40 of the top 50 MD programs, Atlantis prepares students for a future career in healthcare.

Since summer of 2021, Atlantis has ran many safe and successful programs throughout the continuance of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Atlantis Review

At the beginning I was very skeptical. Really all the way until my very first day of shadowing I was nervous about the program. It was pretty expensive to be honest and it toon a lot of time and energy to prepare for the program. So I was worried that at the end of it all it wouldn’t be worth it. It was my first time ever traveling alone and out of the country. The first day of shadowing really opened my eyes to see how beautiful it can be when science and care really come together. Not only are Atlantis staff really helpful but also the doctors and nurses in the hospital. On days where it was slow and I felt like I wasn’t getting the most out of it, I could go to anyone and ask to change that and they would. I would do it all again if I could. It was such a beautiful experience and so worth everything I put into it. You meet such amazing people along the way and make incredible connections. There are sometimes where you light not click with everyone either in your group or out, but it builds your social skills and your team building skills which is so important for the field of medicine. After just a week you become known in the hospital if you do it all right and you have people who ask you to come to their departments. The hours seem long on paper but my four weeks flew by and I feel like I still didn’t see and learn everything I could have. Atlantis has a lot to offer if you take the time to make the most of your time overseas.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
I was most surprised by how excited the doctors and nurses were to teach. Even if you didn’t know something or asked an excessive amount of questions they always answered and wanted to give you more and do more for you. It’s harder in the states to have this kind of attitude in the medical field but in my experience in Greece, every day was filled with so much conversation and knowledge.

Atlantis-Thessaloniki

If you are looking for a great pre-medical experience and would also love to go abroad, I highly recommend this program. From shadowing, scrubbing in, and helping doctors you will gain so much knowledge and interest in medicine. Atlantis provides opportunities that you would not find in the USA and you will also meet the most amazing doctors, directors, and friends.

Greek food is amazing and the directors kept us well fed. We are supposed to buy our own groceries but our meals were so large I had enough left-overs for both lunch and dinner the next day! I literally did not buy groceries once in the whole month I was there.

Thessaloniki is a busier city right on the seaside. It is beautiful in its own way and close to many amazing things. During my stay, I was able to fly to Athens for a weekend, visit Mt. Olympus, Meteora, and many beaches. The only things I didn't like were: the constant smell of cigarettes (this is lessened in Athens), garbage in the port, and graffiti everywhere. If you are looking for a faster-paced city with mountainous views right on the ocean, Thessaloniki is the place for you.

What was your funniest moment?
Red hair is RARE. Pictures were taken of me everyday.

Amazing Experience

The Atlantis Fellowship was a unique opportunity to shadow and learn about the healthcare system of another country while in undergrad. I was extremely impressed by the staff and how helpful they were to make sure each fellow had the best experience. I was able to shadow in many specialties and view 18 surgeries in the OR! Outside of the hospital, I was able to tour Athens and several Greek islands. I highly recommend this for any serious pre-med students who also love to travel and learn about other cultures. Although I originally did not know anyone else going on this fellowship, I easily made friends with all of the fellows! I know that I have made life long connections with both the doctors in Greece and the future doctors that were on the trip.

Atlantis!

Atlantis does such an amazing job at making sure all fellows are happy, comfortable, and getting the most out of shadowing! It was amazing getting to be in foreign hospitals for three weeks, you really learn so much and it’s truly a once in a lifetime experience! Site managers are extremely helpful and the Doctors truly want to teach! They are so knowledgeable and kind. It’s such an honor to be able to have learned from such amazing doctors. The opportunity to see various specialties was my favorite part because I was able to view different aspects of medicine and how each department operates. The residents are so helpful and kind! They all want you to feel welcome and comfortable and it’s great to know you aren’t a burden or in the Doctors way.

Most amazing experience of my life

The Atlantis Program is a very safe, fun, and exciting way to travel and get experience shadowing for pre-med students. It is the ultimate opportunity for undergraduate students to gain essential experience for applying to medical school and for personal growth in general. The site managers were amazing, the pre-departure information was very helpful, and the Atlantis post enrollment team was very very helpful throughout the entire pre-departure process. The food and atmosphere was phenomenal, and I would go back in a heartbeat. I would highly recommend this program to any undergraduate/ pre-med student, or anyone looking to travel abroad and gain valuable experience while doing so. The people I met were amazing, and it was for sure a life-changing experience.

What would you improve about this program?
There is nothing specific that this program needs to improve. Everything was pretty perfect.

Shadow Abroad for the Experience of a Lifetime

I traveled to Athens, Greece for a 3 week medical fellowship through Atlantis. I knew none of my fellows, and traveled for the first time by myself. I was so scared about this experience, but it changed my life!! I got to shadow multiple specialities and be in the operating rooms for actual surgeries. I shadowed departments like Radiation Oncology, Robotics, E.N.T., Cardiologist, EchoCardiology, and so many more. Also, I was able to watch one of the best Robotic surgeons preform a major gastrectomy. My site manager went to the doctor with me when I got sick and was always so helpful and accessible. I made so many new friendships with my amazing fellows. We traveled together on the weekends and have each others social media to keep up with each other now.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would only change the fact that I did not reach out to my fellows before I got there. I feel like it would've been better to kind of know them before.

Atlantis Fellowship in Athens Greece - 1.5 Weeks

I would definitely recommend Atlantis because of the amazing opportunities provided both inside and outside of the hospital at which the fellows are shadowing. Within the hospital I personally had the opportunity to shadow a variety of doctors, in a variety of specialties, observing a plethora of different surgeries/consultations, as well as to develop personal relationships with the medical professionals, which does not come as easily/naturally back home. Outside of the hospital, I gained a better understanding of a different countries medical system, got to experience differing cultures, learned to adapt/grow in a different environment, and established friendships with a group of like-minded, motivate, pre-medical students that I know will last a lifetime.

What would you improve about this program?
I wish that more dates were offered! Other than that, I thought that the Atlantis Fellowship was run professionally and effectively, which made the idea of traveling to a different country comfortable and so much fun!

Atlantis shadowing in Greece

I had an amazing time shadowing in Greece. I learned more than i thought I would and I saw more than I thought I would. Doing this program validated my love for medicine and helped me realize that it is what I want to do for the rest of my life. When I arrived in Greece, I wasn’t quite sure of what I was expecting, but I know by the end of the trip, this program far exceeded those expectations and then some. I would recommend this to everyone.

What would you improve about this program?
I didn’t find many improvements.
