About Program

The Alliance for Smiles (AfS) International Medical Fellowship program is designed for pre-med students who are ready to enter the medical field. Our program offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about cleft surgeries by supporting and watching our highly trained doctors and nurses on an AfS mission. Interns are expected to shadow and support the doctors, nurses and non-medical volunteers one-on-one for approximately 7 hours/day and 6 days/week. Unlike many international medical programs, AfS is a non-profit organization focused on giving to the communities in which we operate. Every fellow who joins to our program will be providing sponsorship for one child’s transformational cleft surgery.

Please apply regardless of your experience level in the medical field!

  • We work with a carefully vetted travel agency and local contacts to book our accommodations ensuring that they are in the safest areas, typically with easy access to major roads, shopping areas, U.S.
  • You will have two days of travel and group excursion to discover the city and rural life in addition to 10 days of program. We have several customized short trips, which are sold as all-inclusive packages and can be added to your fellowship charges.

Yes, I recommend this program

Grateful!

Words cannot describe how thankful I am for having been included in the program as Alliance for Smile’s first intern / educational observer. I had such an amazing experience during the trip to Myanmar.
I am very passionate about becoming a doctor someday, and this trip just encouraged me to pursue my goals even more. Being a young student, just the ability to be present among your nurses and doctors, and being able to observe and ask questions is a gift all in itself. Experiencing new cultures and immersing myself in a country that I have never been to before was a valuable experience that I will never forget.
Some of my top takeaways from the trip were visiting with the families of the children who had just been operated on, and getting to be right next to the surgeons while they were at work. Speaking with people from the hospital and learning how to operate on cleft lips and palates was truly an awarding experience. This was a very intense and deeply moving experience as all the doctors worked so incredibly hard around the clock!

I find that trips like this help shape the kind of person I strive to be, and the kind of doctor I hope to become.

Thank you Alliance for Smiles!
