Global Public Health Internships with FSD

By Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD)   Reviews (0)   0% Rating

Spend the summer as a Public Health intern at one of the Foundation for Sustainable Development’s (FSD) community-based partner organizations in Africa, Asia or Latin America. Public Health Interns have the opportunity to grow personally and professionally in this culturally immersive and educational program while contributing to locally-led efforts to address public health issues. Interns are matched with a host organization, learn about their priorities, and work with their host-colleagues to develop a project plan that aligns with the organization's mission and will advance efforts that are important to the community. Some interns may work on developing brand new projects & others strengthen existing projects, but the focus remains on supporting local needs with local resources to ensure community ownership and long-term effectiveness. An equally important component of this program is that interns live with FSD host-families to foster community integration & cultural understanding.

FSD partners with over 60 community-based health organizations globally that provide a wide spectrum of local services that are crucial to community growth and wellbeing. Public Health Interns have the opportunity to interact with host communities that may participate in community education; HIV/AIDS support; child health and nutrition; preventative outreach; psychological and social services for women and children; reproductive care; community-based participatory research; holistic health; or health empowerment. Many communities have limited access to the most basic health resources, and Public Health Interns play an essential role in educating community members about global health. Public Health Interns may intern at a hospital, health center, rehabilitation center, clinic, or NGO focused on health related issues. Note that interns are not permitted to provide clinical medical services unless they submit proof of medical qualifications and licensing.

Critical to FSD’s work to support local health initiatives is capacity building of organizations and community members to maintain their own physical and mental health. FSD interns provide creative perspectives and serve as a powerful source of support for FSD partner organizations and the people they serve, while helping to stabilize the most critical ingredient to community growth.
