About Program

Atlantis is the largest and most reputable pre-health study abroad organization for US undergraduates. What better way to gain 60+ clinical hours than in the beautiful and warm country of Spain. Not only will students be shadowing in top European hospitals with well-esteemed physicians, but students also have the opportunity to explore the rich culture that their host city has to offer.

Students will learn from and build relationships with the physicians in each specialty they rotate in and participate in excursions to enhance intercultural perspectives. This is the best way to show MD/DO/PA school admissions that you can compare and contrast different healthcare systems and apply that knowledge towards improving the care of your future patients. With alumni in 40 of the top 50 MD programs, Atlantis prepares students for a future career in healthcare.

Since summer of 2021, Atlantis has ran many safe and successful programs throughout the continuance of the COVID-19 pandemic.

An amazing experience!

It was an awesome experience overall! Housing was great, hospital was an amazing educational experience, and there was so much happening in the area that it felt very urban and social. I got to explore the town and the restaurants there, and the public transport was awesome as well. The doctors were very interactive and they taught alot about the anatomy as well as helping grow my spanish speaking skills while they also spoke English. The hospital was very easy to manuever and to get to using public transport. Highly recommend!

Great Educational and Cultural Experience

This program is truly a life-changing opportunity that I would recommend to any pre-health student. My hospital experience was fantastic, as I got to see different procedures and elements of life in 6 different departments. All of the hospital staff was extremely friendly and ready to help explain something at any time. The cultural immersion of the program was also fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the Spanish food we were able to try at our group meals, and I loved being able to further explore the culture of Spain through our group excursions and individual travel. If you have the opportunity to do this program, do it!

Pros
  • Cultural immersion
  • Hospital experience
  • Free time
Cons
  • Language barrier

Burgos, Spain - Pre-Health Shadowing

I would say that my experience was unique because we had exposure to diverse medical cases! Shadowing doctors provided a first-hand experience that would be really hard to find here in the States. The patient interaction was also top tier, you were not only communicating with them patient to pre-health shadower but also working and practicing on your Spanish, which leads to unforgettable moments and something you can take back home!
I would definitely recommend this to anyone pre-med wanting to travel!

Pros
  • Beautiful Architecture
  • Welcoming Community
  • First-Hand Shadowing experience
Cons
  • Transportation to site
  • Lots of out of pocket spending
  • If your wanting to travel else where in europe, it was 2 hours away to the nearest international airport

An Incredible Opportunity

Getting to shadow doctors in different departments was amazing. I learned so much and got to meet some incredible people. The program staff is so kind and helpful, always available and supportive. We stayed in a really nice building in beautiful apartments, and I really felt that I got to experience the daily life of Zaragoza citizens. Our excursions were so fun and educational, and the three weeks of the program seemed to fly by. Our group dinners were delicious and always offered us a different type of cuisine, enhancing our knowledge and experience.

Atlantis Pre-Health Program in Spain

My experience with Atlantis was incredible! I felt very welcomed by each of the departments and learned so much during my three-week experience. I got the opportunity to explore several different departments and learn about topics that I would not have had the opportunity to do at home. The Atlantis team was also very helpful throughout my trip and was always available to help and answer any questions I has. I had so much fun and made lifelong friends and lasting memories. This was truly an incredible experience that I would recommend to anyone.

Pros
  • pre-health experience

Just go for it

If you are independent and want a good mix of free time and shadowing, you need to go on an Atlantis trip. They provide so much support and activities and group dinners. I got to experience so much in just two weeks and I would do it again every time. I had a great time in my rotations and was exposed to a lot of different things. I was also able to do a bit of traveling within Spain while I was there while still getting ample shadowing hours in. This was also my first time out of the States and it was amazing all around. If you are even thinking about studying abroad with Atlantis, just go for it. You won't regret it.

Pros
  • Free time
  • Medical experience
  • Tried lots of Spanish cuisine
Cons
  • Larger groups are a bit hard to navigate with

Barbastro Shadowing Experience with Atlantis

I loved shadowing in Spain with Atlantis. I was given the opportunity to interact with such intelligent and welcoming doctors. I felt comfortable asking any and all questions that I had, and because of this I was able to enjoy my experience within the hospital to the fullest. However Atlantis is more than the opportunities it offers within the hospital. I was also able to experience the culture of a region of the country I had never been to. The adventures I went on with my peers made for memories I will never forget. I learned so much and I would definitely recommend shadowing with Atlantis to anyone with even the slightest interest in medicine.

2022 Valladolid

I attended an Atlantis program in Valladolid, Spain this past summer (2022). My 3 week program consisted of shadowing at Rio Hortega University Hospital various specialties such as OBGYN, General Surgery, and Cardiology. The program makes sure to set you up with doctors who are able to explain everything in English. I was fortunate enough to know the native language, but do not worry if you don't! During your program, you will have a site manager who orients you around your program's city. Your tuition includes very nice housing, nice meals, breakfast groceries, tours, excursions and more. I went without knowing anybody in my group and we all became very good friends instantly! We still talk to this day and visit each other :) The opportunity is definitely one considering and I cannot recommend it more! I mean international shadowing? It sounds amazing by itself! Plus all the extras Atlantis has to offer :)

Pros
  • Shadowing experience after pandemic
  • International
  • Global health/Diversity
