Why did you decide to study abroad with AIFS at the University of Salamanca?
Samantha: I studied abroad with AIFS because the programs my school offered didn't include a Spring Semester in Spain and as a fall sport athlete, who wanted to go to Spain. I knew I had to do it on my own so I found the best program and one that transferred back to my school. AIFS made the process very simple. I specifically chose Salamanca because of it's history and strong connection to the true language.
What made your study abroad experience unique and special?
Samantha: A lot of things made my study abroad experience memorable, simply traveling across the Atlantic alone for 5 months certainly topped the list! I went over alone, but truly did come back with great friends and relationships that changed who I am as a person today. Being able to have the AIFS office to go to if we needed something or just to hang out was a nice comfort. Studying abroad isn't always fancy trips and neat souvenirs, there are tears and hardship involved, but that's part of what makes doing it so great. You learn a lot about the world, others and most importantly, yourself! The food wasn't bad either. ;)
How has this experience impacted your future?
Samantha: In terms of impact, I learned more than I ever thought possible in 5 months. I learned not only the language, but so much about the culture. Since then I've been borderline obsessed with different cultures and learning about them. *Shamless plug, if anyone out there has a job for me all about culture, I'm there! Having Spanish in my background helped me get a head start on my teaching career in the city. Although I now teach in a more rural district, my start was in the city simply because if my Spanish. I pretty much exploited the personal impact studying abroad had on me, but to reiterate, I'm glad I took the once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm changed because of it.
