Why did you decide to intern abroad with My China Opportunity?
Justin: I decided to go abroad after I met Chris and Miranda in San Diego at an entrepreneur meeting at my university and I liked what they were doing. Most of all, I could tell they were genuine people with a passion for what they are doing. I researched many internship placement firms, but MCO seemed the best because they were boutique which I feel provides a very personal and professional experience.
What made this study abroad experience unique and special?
Justin: I would say that this experience was unique because I had an opportunity to get connected to China and grow as an individual. I learned so much about myself through the program & internship. Also, getting offered a full-time job was something that made my experience special because I got to stay in China for longer then three months.
I would also say that without Chris and Miranda, my experience probably would have not been the same. Since I did a job in sales & spoke no Mandarin, I had to utilize professional networks in Beijing. It was great having Chris and Miranda for support to point me in the right direction for my internship and personal life.
What is one piece of advice you’d give future My China Opportunity students?
Justin: Take it to the limit. Push yourself beyond all of the ideas you had before you come to China. Chris & Miranda will always be there for you but they will push you to be independent. Experience as many opportunities and perspectives as possible, don’t just think about your major, you may find a whole new passion from coming out to China.
Do you think your program changed you as a person?
Justin: This opportunity has most definitely changed me as a person. You can’t come to China and not change. Your brain is exposed to new sights, smells, tastes and all sorts of sensory experiences, not to mention how much learning a language can change your brain. This program has made me mentally strong and flexible. Everyday is a challenge and adventure, make the most of it.
Describe a goal you set and how you went about accomplishing it.
Justin: My goal for my first year in China was to break all the limits and barriers put on me by myself and my peers back home in California. I was a college graduate who studied sociology and religion, what most people would consider two useless degrees for a good professional future.
Now I look back and smile at the fact that I got to study what I wanted to during university and it has not held me back, it has motivated me. That being said, My China Opportunity gave me that chance to change others perception. I am now a professional in China and will soon be taking an executive role in my company. Chris and Miranda promised opportunities to move up quickly and they were right!
