I never felt lost or out of touch with what was happening in the city, thanks to their continuous updates and recommendations. They also organized some truly exciting tours and activities for me, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to my time in Buenos Aires. Te Quiero, Mente

My experience with Mente was wonderful, especially as someone who is mid-career--they helped to arrange my trip to accommodate this fact so that not only did it run smoothly but I had plenty of opportunities to meet others in the program during the weekly cultural events, which were a highlight for me. It was also nice to be able to adapt my Spanish lessons, and the availability of the program coordinators helped me to feel truly taken care of. Thank you, Mente, for making my experience in Buenos Aires!

A Wonderful Experience

I spent two weeks in Buenos Aires doing the intensive Tango course and added Spanish course and had a wonderful time. The program was perfectly organized by Mente, with members of staff always available to answer questions or help out. The accommodation they had put me in was very centrally located, within walking distance from the Tango studio and just a short subway ride from the language school. Mente also organized weekly events with other Mente students, which was a lot of fun and a great way to make friends. The Tango classes were a lot of fun, yet challenging at the same time. The teacher was friendly and supportive, and I got lots of practice. The Spanish lessons were also very good, I felt like after a week, I was able to say quite a lot (the groups change quite a lot though, and the teachers too, so it can get a bit repetitive).
In short, this Mente program was very interesting and great value for money.

Mente Argentina Volunteer Program Review

I joined Mente Argentina for a two month volunteer program combined with Spanish lessons, and I can confidently say it was truly an amazing opportunity.

For starters, Mili and Sam, both of whom got me set up when I first got to Buenos Aires, were kind, welcoming, responsive, and made sure that I had everything I needed throughout the duration of the program. They both put in so much work every day to make these programs fun, interesting, and eye-opening for everyone involved. Mente additionally puts on weekly activities for all of its participants, where individuals can get to know one another and create community. I would strongly recommend that everyone go to as many of these as possible, as it is a great way to meet new people and explore areas of the city that you aren’t as knowledgeable about. Through these events, I was able to visit a theatre, museums, restaurants, the Japanese Garden, and many more.

The volunteer work that I did focused around a home for children, and I was able to play with and develop connections with kids ages 0-12. Every day, I would travel to this home for a few hours, bring games and art for the kids, and sometimes help them with a meal as well. It was both a great way to practice Spanish, as well as an amazing opportunity to learn more about what life is like for a young student in the city. I felt like my time here was very well-spent, and I came out of this position with a much better understanding of the schooling and healthcare systems in Argentina as well.

For my housing, I was able to stay in a residence for students attending university in Buenos Aires. I had three roommates for the majority of my stay, two of which were from Ecuador and one who was from Northern Argentina. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know them, and they made me feel welcomed from the moment I arrived.

All in all, I would strongly recommend Mente Argentina for anyone looking for an immersive, independent experience in an urban city. The volunteer program and Spanish lessons work with your schedule, so you develop a sustainable routine while still having plenty of time to explore the city on your own. There are many fun day trips as well from the city center, such as taking the ferry to Colonia in Uruguay or going up to the delta Tigre in a nearby province. I am so appreciative for everyone that I met during my time with Mente and I hope to return to Buenos Aires someday soon! Below are a few photos from my stay-

Pros
  • Got to meet participants from all over the world
  • Practiced my Spanish skills and learned a lot about the political and economic situation in Argentina
  • Had a sustainable balance between structured and unstructured time
Cons
  • The heat during the summer is a lot to manage without air conditioning

Best 6 weeks

This year I had the pleasure of experiencing Argentinian culture for six weeks. Thanks to the amazing Mente Argentina staff and other fellow participants, this has been an absolutely unforgettable adventure which I will cherish forever.
Through Mente, I took the intensive language course which was fun, interactive and perfectly challenging for my beginner proficiency level. In addition, they provided me with a wonderful accomodation in Palermo, the most exciting part of Buenos Aires! The comfortable and fully furnished apartment was also close to all things I needed, such as the convinience stores right next door and the lavadero and metro station down the street. Sharing the apartment with four other Mente participants allowed me to build the best friendships and feel right at home there!
The combination of the hospitality and professional assistance was remarkable. For example, the initial services included in the personal welcoming booklet, like a SIM card and public transport card, proved extremely useful and stress-relieving. Similarly, any questions and requests were always promptly answered by the extraordinary staff. Moreover, I always made sure to attend the weekly activites that Mente organized. They were the perfect way exploring the city’s culture and food like a local in a very fun and social way with my fellow Mente participants, accompanied by the best Mente coordinator! This way, I met the other diverse and international students and was able to build lasting friendships.
All in all, I had the most amazing stay in Buenos Aires thanks to the exceptional staff from Mente Argentina (and the language school) and I highly recommend their services to everyone who considers visiting Argentina as well!

Pros
  • Hospitality and professionalism
  • Experience argentinian/buenos aires culture like a local
  • Friendships, fun, social

Why did you choose this program?

I chose Mente Argentina because I saw that they run short term programs and I was interested in a 2 week Tango intensive program combined with culinary studies. I also noticed that they had programs running frequently and would also pair me up with a host family, which is what I was interested in doing so that I could improve my language skills and absorb more of the culture.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

Mente Argentina found my housing for me, arranged my airport pick up and drop off and scheduled my dance and culinary lessons for me. They made the whole experience seamless and the only thing that I had to arrange myself were my flights to and from Buenos Aires. They sent me my schedule and paired me with the perfect host mom for my needs as well.

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I would advise them to not live alone because the experience is much richer linguistically if you live with a Spanish speaker. I would advise them to become current with regard to the volatile economic situation in Argentina because it can be tricky to access cash due to the current economic circumstances in Argentina. This has nothing to do with the program but it is a piece of advice that I think is important.

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

A typical day for me included a private tango class during the day, a group tango lesson at night, a 2.5 hour cooking class at the Gato Dumas Culinary Institute and a home cooked dinner with my host mom. After that, I usually go out tango dancing from about 10 PM until 3 AM. I would go to sleep at about 3:30 am and then wake up at about 9 am and do it all again.

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

My biggest fear was personal safety since I was traveling alone. I overcame it by being cautious, being mindful of my environment, not drinking or drugging, not carrying a lot of cash on my person and not walking alone at night. As a result, I did not feel any fear and just remained vigilant and mindful wherever I went.

Write and answer your own question.

I would recommend not waiting if you have the urge to travel. I am so grateful that I did this program at this time in my life and I learned so much in a very short amount of time. I have so many stories to share but I would say that one notable one is experiencing the nightlife and when I say days which is unparalleled and seeing people my grandparents age arriving at milongas at 3 AM and dancing their hearts out until 6 AM on a weeknight.

Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Thaís is passionate about learning new languages, cultures, and travel. She has worked several years in the Tourism industry and loves to help people pursue their dreams.

What is your favorite travel memory?

One of my favorite travel memories is when I went to El Salvador. I had the opportunity to get to know this tiny country in Central America which is full of lovely people, good food, and enriching culture. This opportunity was amazing as it gave me an experience of being in a place that is so different from my hometown, and it made me start seeing things in a new perspective.

How have you changed/grown since working for your current company?

Working at Mente Argentina gave me the opportunity to meet people from many different places. I learned so much from their customs and cultures which greatly helped me develop a better understanding of people. Overall, it has been a truly great experience, and I hope to keep learning!

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

Mente Argentina receives participants of all ages. We once had the opportunity to receive an older participant with a dream to learn Tango. She has always loved dancing and had the desire to learn Tango but never had the opportunity until she was older. I was deeply impressed by how determined she was and how she never gave up on her dream.

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

Mente Argentina offers a variety of programs, and I personally would like to participate on the volunteer program. I believe that international volunteering promotes cross-cultural learning, and it helps create global awareness and understanding between cultures as well as contribute to our ongoing effort to bridge the cultural, social, and economic gap which currently exists in Argentina.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

Our company is unique because we are a small team that works together. We always try to be like family to all of our participants. We think in the minimum details so they can return with the feeling that they had the best time, and most importantly, that they achieved a positive change.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

I believe that for a company to be successful, it must always treat its customers and employees as its number one priority. When everyone in the company works together in order to achieve the same goal, success is a given; the company becomes larger than the sum of its individual parts, and great things can be achieved.
