New Zealand Scholarship FAQ
This scholarship seems too good to be true. Is it?
This scholarship is absolutely, 100% real! We are awarding one worth up to $15,000 USD to an undergraduate student from the US. Education New Zealand and Go Overseas are passionate about studying abroad in New Zealand. This scholarship is meant to encourage more students to seriously consider studying abroad in New Zealand.
I work at a university that has exchange agreements with universities in New Zealand and/or my school is a part of a consortium/association (ie: ISEP or EAP) that coordinates study abroad to New Zealand. Can my students apply?
Absolutely! When your students are completing their applications, have them select "Direct Enrollment" and then apply directly to the New Zealand institution. Scholarship funds cannot be applied to the consortium, they must either go to the New Zealand university or a provider listed on this application.
I completed my scholarship application. Am I done?
Not quite! You must also apply to the university(s) in New Zealand that you'd like to attend, in order to actually apply the scholarship funds if you win.
How do I do this?
To apply for the study abroad program you want to attend, head over to our list of Universities & Providers. From that page, you can click on the programs you want to apply to and learn about their application requirements and processes. Note that some providers and universities have an application deadline of October 1st, so don't delay!
What if I don't win a scholarship? Can I still study abroad in New Zealand?
Yes, and we absolutely hope you do. Other schools and providers are offering individual scholarships if you don't win the full scholarship. Feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions.
How can I win this camera?
On September 17th, we will put all applicant names in a hat and draw one random lucky winner. This US undergraduate student, who has completed the application form, will receive a camera valued up to $500! Go Overseas will pick out the camera and coordinate the shipping. Our hope is that this camera is the best supplement to an abroad experience... and we hope we get to see the pics!
Will my top 3 program/university choices contact me after I submit my application to this scholarship?
Yes. As soon as you apply, we'll share your contact information with the 3 providers/universities you have chosen. They will then contact you to help you prepare for your study abroad adventure in New Zealand. Whether you are chosen as the recipient of this scholarship or not, we hope you choose to study abroad on one of their excellent programs.
If I’m chosen as the recipient of one of the scholarships, will there be any costs to me when I'm in New Zealand?
Yes. Remember, you will still need to pay rent and you'll need to eat! Remember, this amount will likely be less than the amount you'd spend on your home campus for a semester.
I see that some study abroad programs have offered additional scholarship funding. Can you tell me more about this?
Certainly, and we're glad you asked. Some very generous providers and schools are offering additional scholarships that can only be applied to the program that is offering them. Each provider and school will be choosing the recipients among the students that apply to them. It's also worth mentioning that the recipients of the main scholarships we give away will not be eligible for additional scholarships.
Any tips for my photo submission?
Sure thing! We look for creativity, relevance to New Zealand, quality, composition, editing skills, and we like to see you in the photo. Remember, all photos must be original. In year's past we've asked to see kiwis in the photo, but this year we'd like applicants to submit a creative photo that illustrates their personal essay answering the question, “What is ‘new’ about studying in New Zealand?”.
When is the application deadline for the Go Overseas Study Abroad Scholarship?
The deadline for New Zealand Scholarship application is Friday, October 11th, 2019 at 11:59 pm PST. With the number of applications we expect to receive, we recommend being proactive and applying early.
Can the Go Overseas Study Abroad Scholarship be applied to a winter, summer or J-Term study abroad program?
No, this scholarship can only be applied to the Spring 2020 or Fall 2020 semester. You can select both!
Can Graduate Students apply for this scholarship?
This year we are only running the undergraduate scholarship. Grad students, keep an eye out for future opportunities!
How are the funds awarded to recipients?
The funds will be sent directly to your university in New Zealand to cover the full tuition costs of the recipient.
Do applicants need to have already been accepted to a study abroad program before applying for the scholarship?
The short answer: No. Undergraduate (study abroad) students should apply as early as possible to their chosen program, though. We expect that many applicants, if not most, will not have applied to a program when submitting their application to this scholarship.
Are there any costs to apply for this scholarship?
No, absolutely not! That would go against everything we believe in here at Go Overseas. We're a very mission driven organization and pretty nice people (at least we think so).
Do I have to finish my application all at once?
No, you'll be able to log in to your account and finish the application later, and you can even make edits after you've submitted it.
Does applying for the scholarship mean I'll definitely be accepted to a program?
No. Applying for the scholarship and applying for a program are two separate things. Be sure to apply for the program of your choice in addition to applying for the scholarship.
I'm a non-traditional student. Can I apply for the New Zealand Study Abroad Scholarship?
Yes, most certainly. Education New Zealand & Go Overseas will judge each applicant on the quality of their application.
Do students with particular majors have an advantage in applying for the New Zealand Scholarship?
Students in all majors are considered equally for the New Zealand Scholarship. Applications are judged based on the quality of their application.
Is there a minimum GPA required in order to apply for the scholarship?
There is no minimum GPA required to apply for the scholarship -- however, when you're conducting your program research be sure to check the provider or university individual requirements for program admission.
Can I view or edit my application after I press 'submit'?
Once you press submit, you can't edit further. If you press 'save draft' you can go back in and edit at any time (before October 11th, that is!).
