Studying abroad in Sydney, Australia through TEAN was the best decision/experience of my life! Sydney is the most perfect city to study in, combined with the beaches, city, art, history, and awesome people. I enjoyed going to classes surrounded with students from all around the world which left me with friends from everywhere. The program also included several opportunities to explore Sydney and surrounding areas included in the cost! My program leader, Laura, always supported us and was there for us when we needed. I enjoyed going to surf lessons organised by the program, as well as a personal tour of the Opera house. There is no other place I could have imagined to study abroad, and I am so thankful I had the support from TEAN!

This program includes several trips in the tuition and it was awesome being able to take advantage of that!
Studying in Sydney allowed me to meet students my age from all over the world, something I could not have done before

Studying abroad in Australia during university had always been a dream of mine and I am so happy I was able to go with a TEAN/ISA program! This program was extremely helpful and supportive throughout my application process, once I arrived in Sydney, all the way until it was time to head back home to the US. The staff are always available to answer any and all questions applying students may have and provide thorough instructions on how to complete the application process. Once you arrive in Australia, all students attend a 5-day orientation packed with so many fun activities where you get to know your peers and how to best assimilate to the Aussie lifestyle. Throughout the semester, the program hosts multiple different cultural experiences and events. The program provides many resources and point of contacts students can utilize throughout their stay to make their stay as enjoyable as possible. I would highly recommend for everyone to study abroad during their time in university, and if you choose to do so, go with a TEAN/ISA program! You will not regret it, the memories will last a lifetime!

I absolutely loved my time abroad. The TEAN staff were incredibly accommodating and helpful. Throughout the semester, our contact in Australia took us on trips around Sydney, from tours of the Opera House to surfing on Bondi Beach. Additionally, they contacted us often with lots of useful information before the program started. We also had the opportunity to go on excursions to other parts of Australia and the surrounding countries. I was able to take a weekend trip to Melbourne and a week trip to Fiji beforehand. There I made some amazing friends and lifelong memories. During the semester, I studied at UNSW in Sydney and had the most magical time. Studying abroad is definitely worth it.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

During our orientation week, there was an opportunity to try crocodile and kangaroo meat. I heard it was pretty tasty!

I absolutely loved going abroad with TEAN. They were available every step of the way to make sure I got all the information I needed and more! They helped me choose a program, pick housing, enroll in classes, and helped with any documentation I needed for the country and school. TEAN allowed me to make friends before starting class, making the transition easier. I could see some of these friends becoming life long friends. With TEAN I was also able to make Australian friends that I still stay in touch with, which was an amazing gift studying aborad. My favorite part of the experience was I was a minute from the beach. I could go to the beach every day without any effort. I was truly living the dream. I am so happy with my experience with TEAN and anyone thinking about going abroad should choose TEAN.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?

If I could go back I would save up more money so I could travel more. There are amazing places to see on that side of the world.

My study abroad experience is something that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I am a firm believer that if anyone has the chance to study abroad while in college, you need to. The memories, lessons, and experiences throughout the 5 months that I was there were some that I will value forever, and I will never be same because of them. I was taught independence like I never experienced before and freedom on a whole new level. Studying abroad was an extremely significant part of my life when I think I needed it the most. I experienced things that some may never get to experience, like skydiving in Wollongong, visiting the Sydney Opera House weekly, and spending my StuVac week with people who are now some of my closest friends in New Zealand! Thank you, Australia for the experience of a lifetime.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

SAVE SAVE SAVE! Going into this whole experience I knew I was going to be spending a lot of money, but I wish I would've saved a little bit more leading up to it instead of just always going into my savings. Although I spent what I did, it was all worth it and I don't regret it at all!

My study abroad experience is a memory I will reflect upon for the rest of my life.I feel so lucky and grateful to have lived in such an amazing environment surrounded by amazing friends. I honestly could not have imagined studying abroad to any other program but TEAN, they made it so easy to connect with other students, travel to different counties during your semester, and engage in activities in your city that you actually want to do. The resident directors and staff truly care about your experience and will do anything they can to help improve it in any way possible. They take you step by step through the whole studying abroad process so you never feel confused or alone. Studying abroad has fueled my passion for traveling and helped me make self realizations along the way!

TEAN is definitely the program you should go abroad with! Sydney was by far one of the coolest places I have ever been, but a new place can be overwhelming. Not with TEAN. TEAN staff members make the transition to your new country SO easy! Experienced and knowledgeable staff made the process of getting there a breeze. TEAN helped me to set up me housing, my visa, and my classes with ease. When I arrived, there was just as much help. TEAN staff members greeted me and picked me up from the airport and helped me to move into my new apartment. I was introduced to other students and taken on a walking tour of Syndey! The first weekend we went surfing at the iconic Bondi Beach! Without TEAN I would have felt lost, but I felt like a local in days!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?

In Australia, I got to try kangaroo at the TEAN farewell dinner provided to us! It was actually really good!

My name is Victoria Guasco and I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia last semester. My experience with TEAN was amazing and whoever is looking to go abroad I would recommend going with TEAN for many reasons. First, they made the transition into Australia very smooth and they also made the transition back home smooth too. Second, they were there if anything went wrong and I could always count on them to help me get adjusted. Third, they held events for TEAN students to get acclimated and make friends. They never left us empty handed and they did everything they could to make us feel safe and at home. Everything was very organized with the program and if you needed something you could get ahold of them within minutes.
My experience with TEAN and studying abroad in general was amazing! Those four and a half months I was there is a time I will never forget and always cherish. I traveled around Australia and New Zealand, made friends i'll have forever, furthered my education, learned many things about myself and grew in every aspect of my life. Leaving your home and started completely new is very hard, but with TEANs help you will not regret your decision to go.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?

First I would tell future travellers to go and to go through TEAN! I was hesitant about going at first, but once the tickets were booked and the time was planned out I was so excited. Second, I would tell future travellers that nerves are okay and they are normal. If you feel nervous contact a TEAN representative or talk to someone that has been through it before, because most likely they have gone through the same thing and know that the nerves fade once you step foot into your new home. Lastly, I would tell future travellers to do it all and never take a day for granted. I went one day and left the next. Time went by really fast and I am so glad I spent every day like it was my last. This is an experience you will never get back and it's something that you should be proud of. Cherish every second and do things you wouldn't normally do. This is your time to live and take advantage of the time you've been given.

Why did you choose this program?

I chose this program because I felt that Sydney offered everything I was looking for as a destination to study abroad. I was interested in experiencing city living, as well as taking classes at a large university (to experience a contrast to my small home uni). Additionally, Sydney is known for its beaches and laidback culture, which I was super exited to experience first hand. I loved being in the city and having everything be so accessible to me, with all of my favorite things just a walk or short bus ride away! I found myself exploring the beaches, the mountains, and walking around the many farmers market the city has.

In a more practical sense, I also figured that living in Sydney for 5 months as opposed to visiting Australia for a holiday would be a lot more worthwhile considering the distance, travel time, and expenses. I found that it was very valuable to be able to have Sydney as my "home-base" for a substantial amount of time, as it allowed me to visit many other countries and places in Australia that I would have never otherwise had the opportunity to travel to had I just gone to Sydney for a short vacation.

What did your program provider (or university) assist you with, and what did you have to organize on your own?

TEAN assisted me with the majority of aspects regarding my education abroad experience. They helped me with securing my student VISA, took care of my health insurance, gave guidance on booking flights, provided a pre-departure orientation as well as an amazing on-ground orientation week in Cairns, Australia at the Great Barrier Reef. In addition to this, the program also took care of securing student housing for me, which was a huge help because finding a place to stay in Sydney as a student can be extremely challenging and costly. After I arrived in Sydney, they helped me get acclimated to my University and provided a number of activities throughout the semester that were included in the program and were a great opportunity to take advantage of!

What is one piece of advice you'd give to someone going on your program?

I would recommend to save up a lot more than you are expecting to! Not only is Sydney an expensive city to live in, but there are also so many more opportunities for traveling and experiences that I had realized or financially prepared for. By saving up and preparing to spend a lot, you are able to give yourself more financial freedom and less stress during your time abroad. It is so important to feel like you can live in abundance and fully experience everything to its greatest potential instead of worrying or limiting yourself in what you can partake in. That being said, if you can swing it, spend it! Money is best spent on experiences you will never forget, and will always come back to you:)

What does an average day/week look like as a participant of this program?

Typically, I would wake up and go for a morning walk to a local cafe to get an outstanding coffee (what a great start to my day!). After this, I would return to my apartment and get ready to head over to campus, which was a convenient 15 minute walk away. After class, sometimes I would take the bus to the beach and spend the rest of my afternoon enjoying the beautiful weather, or I would head back to my apartment to do some school work or go to the gym. On the weekends, I could always be found going to the farmers market, the beach, or the Blue Mountains. I also loved grabbing dinner with friends or my roommates, where we loved to head to Spice Alley or Newtown to dine at some of the best restaurants! We also loved to end our night with some frozen yoghurt (I highly recommend Yo-Chi)

Going into your experience abroad, what was your biggest fear, and how did you overcome it? How did your views on the issue change?

Going into my experience, the biggest fear I had was my housing accommodation. I was most nervous for living with 7 other people and having to share a room and common area with so many people. I overcame this fear simply by going into the experience with no expectations and trying to remain as open as possible. Once I got settled into my apartment, met my roommates, and got accustomed to my new life and routine, my view changed significantly and my fear subsided. I actually grew to love living with so many people! It was so nice to always have people to do things with and know a solid number of individuals while learning to navigate a completely new city and country.

What is your favorite travel memory?

This is such a hard question!

I think my favorite one most recently would have to be waking up in Queenstown every morning and opening my shades to see Cecil Peak across Lake Wakatipu. It's an absolutely unreal sight; photos don't do Queenstown justice.

I understand now why all of our students go back again after their orientation!

What is the best story you've heard from a return student?

I had a student that went on our University of Otago program in New Zealand which houses a number of international students together with a local kiwi flatmate to help them get acclimated to the area.

This student, in particular, had made such a great connection with her flatmates that they still talked regularly and she was planning to go visit some of them in their home countries over the summer.

It's great when study abroad experiences open up students to more cultural opportunities not just relating to the country they’re in, and more future travel!

If you could go on any program that your company offers, which one would you choose and why?

I love our Semester in Shanghai program. I've fallen completely in love with Shanghai as a city -- there's so much to do and see. Plus then you can travel through the rest of China, in addition to the Chengdu and Beijing excursions we include in the program.

I'd personally love to see the sunrise over the Great Wall. I'm always so jealous when I see the photos each semester! Also, the language program is an excellent opportunity. It's incredibly immersive and I'd love to advance my Chinese language skills.

What makes your company unique? When were you especially proud of your team?

I really like that at TEAN it's very one-on-one when working with students and we focus on a specific part of the world. It gives you the opportunity to know your students well and your regions intimately. I love being able to tell students about my favorite places to get pork bao in Shanghai or where the local farmer’s market in Wellington is.

Working in an office in Chicago, we don't get to see students much but have the opportunity to get to know them through their pre-departure calls and emails which is really nice.

I'm always proud of our team here, but especially when I see someone working closely with a student when they run into an issue or just need extra help. We really try to go above and beyond for our students here and when I see colleagues going an extra mile to make study abroad work for the students, I get a swell of pride for what we do.

What do you believe to be the biggest factor in being a successful company?

Being able to adapt and change. We're constantly revising our processes and looking at what works and what doesn't for students and then making changes to make the process easier.

You get students from all different backgrounds, ranging from those who have traveled extensively to those who have never even set foot on a plane before.

We want to make sure everything is clear so that whatever your background is in terms of traveling and studying abroad, it's made easy for you - and fun!
