About

An enchanting study abroad experience awaits you in Vienna, the City of Music and Dreams. The capital of Austria has everything a student could want, including a sophisticated lifestyle, delectable food, and even world-renowned opera. A semester in Vienna will provide you with enough academic and cultural stimulation to last a lifetime!

Vienna is consistently named one of the most livable cities in the world, and we promise that the quality of your study abroad experience will be just as high. Between your classes at Vienna’s top-ranked universities you’ll have the opportunity to explore every nook and cranny of this city. Stops will include stunning classical palaces, museums filled with famous masterpieces, and the serene oasis of flower-filled parks.

Culture & Immersion

Vienna is the music capital of the world and has produced some of the most influential musicians of all time. Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms are only a few of the prodigies that called this city home. In addition to classical music, excellent opera is also a fixture at the many concert halls across Vienna.

Vienna is also a must-see for fine-art aficionados. The city has over 100 art museums, as well as numerous monuments that highlight important architectural movements such as Baroque and Art Nouveau. Vienna is also unique as the only city to continue the age-old tradition of the classical ball. There are more than 200 balls in Vienna each year, complete with live orchestras and opera singers, so if you like to dress up and dance then this is the city for you!

Foodies will appreciate exploring the cafes and food stands that line the streets of Vienna. Make sure to taste the city’s specialties, including wiener schnitzel (Austria’s national dish), strudel, and sachertorte.

Austrians are generally considered to be friendly but slightly reserved. For the easiest adjustment, try to always be respectful and make an effort to be kind and considerate to the people you meet.

Don’t leave Vienna without seeing these sites!

  • Hofburg Palace: Once home to the dynasty of the Austrian empire, this architectural masterpiece was built in the 13th century.
  • Schonbrunn Palace: Another of the many palaces that fill Vienna, this one houses 1,441 rooms, a traditional French garden inspired by Versailles, and the world’s oldest zoo.
  • St. Stephen’s Cathedral: First built in 1147, this structure serves as a symbol of the city as well as its religious center.
  • Belvedere Palace: This Baroque-style palace contains one of the most renowned museums in Vienna. lt houses over 100 works by Gustav Klimt (the largest collection by this artist in the world).
  • Riesenrad: This giant ferris wheel in downtown Vienna was built in 1897 for Emperor Franz Joseph I. It is 212 feet tall and offers sweeping views of the city.

Affordability

As a member of the European Union, Austria’s currency is the Euro. Although prices will be comparable to the rest of Western Europe (and a little but more expensive than the US), Austria is actually more affordable than either Paris or London.

Students should be sure to take advantage of Vienna's many well-priced bistros and taverns. The 7th District, a trendy area near the center of Vienna, is particularly popular among students because it has many cafes, where a cappuccino is 2-3 euros. Students discounts are also offered at many of the city's museums, which can help keep costs low.

If you’re worried about paying for your study abroad program, there are scholarships available that can help.
