Study Abroad in Bangladesh

About

Bangladesh was often considered a no-hope country after the many tsunamis that hit. However, Bangladesh has bounced back immensely and strongly. It offers as much history as India, more Buddhism than Nepal, as many beaches as Malaysia, and cheaper prices than even Thailand! Bangladesh is a combination of many of the South Asian countries, all rolled up into one.

As they don’t often have Western tourists, the locals are extremely friendly and always curious to learn more about you. So, if you’re looking for a place with few tourists, Bangladesh is a great place to go.

At Go Overseas, we strive to provide the most comprehensive program and study abroad listings available. At this time, we are only able to find a few study abroad opportunities in Bangladesh, listed below. You can read this full guide to studying abroad in Bangladesh, or use the Search page to explore other study abroad opportunities.

How to Choose a Program

Choosing a program can often make or break your experience. Especially in a place like Bangladesh where most students don’t study abroad, it is vital that you research as much as you can. As such, here are some things to consider:

Language

The official language in Bangladesh is Bengali. However, don’t fret. English is often considered the de-facto, co-official language, so you won’t experience too much of a language barrier. Bangladesh also has quite a few immigrants, so Burmese and Arakanese (from Myanmar) and Hindu (from Pakistan and India) are prevalent in Bangladesh.

Housing

Housing is often the factor that decides your trip simply because you spend almost half your trip there. Thus, make sure you weigh the pros and cons equally before deciding. In Bangladesh, you will be offered independent housing, university designated dorms (or apartments), and homestays. Independent housing allows you to really be independent as you find your own place to live, with roommates you won’t know. University designated dorms are independent as well, and if you really want to connect with your peers, this is the choice for you. Lastly, homestays provide you with the best sense of the Bangladesh culture, as you experience truly and daily what a family in Bangladesh would typically experience!

Immersion and Cultural Activities

Bangladesh offers a number of things for you to see and do. Experience its history through mosques, monuments and archaeological sites. Take a load off at its beaches, picnic spots and forests. Have some fun and adventure while fishing, hiking, river cruising, surfing, water skiing and rowing. For Buddhism, take a look at Bogra and Paharpur. Rangamati offers a tribal experience of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is famous for its scenic views. Sundarbans is a UNESCO world heritage site, and is the largest Mangrove forest on earth. Following in the theme of the world’s largest, Cox’s Bazar is the longest uninterrupted sandy sea beach. Also take a look at St. Martin’s Island, Bangladesh’s only coral island, Nafa-khum Waterfall, Lawachara National Park and Keokradong Peak. Bangladesh is truly a place where you can get away from all the tourism, while becoming one with Mother Nature!

Choosing a City in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a country of variation. Whether it's the busy streets of Dhaka you're searching for, or the trade heavy port of Chittagong, you will certain have a new experience!

Dhaka

Dhaka is Bangladesh’s hectic capital city. It’s a very hustling and bustling metropolis of around 12 million people and growing everyday. The energy is vivacious here, as the city seems to be always moving. You will feel yourself overwhelmed by the amount to see and the number of sensations to take in. It can be guaranteed that you will not forget your experiences in Dhaka in the slightest. Be wary, as returning to normal life may be slightly boring after your study abroad trip in Dhaka.

Chittagong

As the second largest city in Bangladesh, Chittagong is the largest international seaport in the country. A very bustling commercial center, its surroundings offer charming hillsides, beaches and forests. Chittagong is a great place to travel to if you want a blend of both nature and city.

Funding

Bangladesh is generally a money friendly place, but it's always nice to save a bit! Here are a few scholarships:
