Fashion Studies in Paris CEA CAPA

CEA offered great stuff both in and out of the classrooms. There were super awesome and really experienced professors that I learned a lot from. They also hosted a ton of events and outings with the students that helped to take advantage of being in Paris and make a lot of friends in the program. They even planned a weekend trip where we got to go to Normandy. We stayed in a nice hotel and they provided our meals. We saw a lot of cool museums and the beautiful beaches of Normandy. I also loved the cultural exchange they held during the semester where were able to meet and interact with other local Parisian students!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried escargot! I was worried about what the texture would be like but it was actually really yummy and way less weird than I was expecting.
Pros
  • There is always something to do in Paris.
  • They have a really convenient public transportation system.
  • CEA CAPA made sure I was able to make the most of my experience.
Cons
  • Language barrier
  • Very different cultural norms
  • Long commute to the academic center

CEA CAPA - Engineering in Paris

My favorite things about studying abroad with CEA CAPA were the included activities and events that we had before and during the program, and the general atmosphere of support that was present during the program. I was not expecting there to be so much included with my program before I went. The weekend excursion was one of my favorite parts of the entire trip, and was of outstanding quality. The guides, transportation, and lodging were all great. In addition, the tours, food tastings, movie night, and cultural exchange were amazing. There was something to do every week and I attended everything I could because I knew it would always be lots of fun. Also, from the beginning of the program it was always clear if we ever had an issue who we needed to reach out to and I always felt very safe while I was abroad.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Use your time abroad to do as much as you can. There is always something new and exciting to do when you're in a city like Paris, and 6 weeks may seem like a long time, but there is still a bunch of stuff that I want to go back to Paris to do someday. Traveling on the weekends is also so easy that you can pretty much go anywhere for very cheap, which I would highly recommend.
Pros
  • Activities
  • Travel
  • Food
Cons
  • Big City
  • Olympics Preparations

The Ultimate Support System

I could talk about how amazing Paris was, how much I loved my classes, and all the fun places I visited, but I am here to talk about why CEA CAPA specifically stood out. First of all, the have a physical building in le marais where office staff are there to help you, find you tutors, and facilitate package deliveries. They maintain a 24/7 emergency hotline, which set me at ease. The program includes visits around Paris and a weekend trip to Normandy - my favorite excursion was going to a ballet!

What was your funniest moment?
While abroad I had a lot of time to travel - 2 week long breaks throughout the spring semester. During my April break I traveled to Sevilla for Feria and danced in the street all night and making such a fool of myself I couldn't stop laughing with my friends the whole time.
Pros
  • Accessibility to resources
  • Friendly staff
  • Great location

Paris Engineering Fall 2023

I cannot express enough how fantastic this experience was! Living with two other roomates from different parts of America in a cozy European apartment in the 5th arrondissement of Paris was a dream! And right next to Ernest Hemmingway's old apartment! Experiencing the daily life, in's and out's of French language and culture on top of the renowned food, historic sights, metro/subway system, unforgettable markets and events was like no other experience and I am ecstatic at the thought of going back ASAP!

What was your funniest moment?
The day of realization when I had reached capability in my French speaking to wear natives would respond back in a full conversation!

Time of my life interning + studying in Paris

I did a study+internship program in Paris through CEA CAPA and had the adventure of a lifetime! I was drawn to this program in particular because I was hoping to build my resume but didn't want to sacrifice having a study abroad experience, therefore this program was perfect for my goals. While working abroad can feel like a daunting task, the team at CEA CAPA helped us to both anticipate and navigate any challenges that we might have encountered. Using CEA's toolbox to work through problems that arose has exacerbated my professional growth and I continue to use these same tools in my current endeavors. I also felt that the internship did not impede with my other courses, which was very important to me.

The 'study' portion was amazing as well. The faculty was fantastic, and I loved using the city as my classroom (going to museums, speaking to natives, etc.). The trips that the CEA team took us on were also very fun and I would suggest taking advantage of every event the school organizes- we went to so many places I would have never chosen to go to myself, and these were actually some of my favorite places that I visited during my time in France.

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve-wracking moment was when there was a flair of terrorist activity in France. As a Massachusetts native, I haven't seen many/any terrorist threats really and it really made me anxious- especially being so far from home and not being super familiar with what was happening. I was able to overcome my anxieties by speaking with CEA staff and altering some travel plans I had made. I try not to let fear dictate my life and plans, however, I think it is important to know your personal limits and take a step back when it feels necessary. Although that one moment was alarming it was fleeting and did not take away from my time as a whole.
Pros
  • Professional Growth
  • Travel
  • Meeting New Friends
Cons
  • Scholarships not widely available
  • Internship program costs more
  • Internship could limit travel opportunity

Paris City Life!

Paris is such an amazing city, and CEA CAPA provided an excellent experience. The staff was so kind and happy to help with any questions. The program provided a lot of opportunities to get to know Paris better, taking part in relevant cultural moments. There were also excursions included in the program cost to travel around France, bringing us to the beach when the weather was nice, into wine country, and even to Belgium in the snow! The classes were engaging, and allowed students to maintain a very reasonable work-life balance and have a great study abroad experience!

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
One of the most surprising things I did was book a trip to Strasbourg one day in advance. I wanted to visit the Christmas markets before I left France, so I decided to make it happen and take a short solo trip to get some Christmas spirit!!
Pros
  • Paris has such amazing food, a lot of which you can find for very reasonable prices.
  • Museums and other attractions are almost always free (or at least discounted) for students!
  • The staff was always there to help and was incredibly supportive.
Cons
  • You kind of have to spend money to do a lot of fun things, and that can add up.
  • There were a lot of strikes, some of which impacted business hours and the metro schedule, which can be inconvenient.
  • You definitely will start to miss some things from home (friends, family, comfort zones).

Studying Engineering in Paris

Going into my sophomore year of university as a Mechanical Engineer I knew that I wanted to study abroad if possible. With most programs, I know that it can be hard to stay on track with courses to graduate on time. However, the program with the Paris Center worked out perfectly for me. I was able to take the engineering courses I needed as well as French courses and another core class. For my core class, I took the History of Paris Through Architecture. This was by far my favorite course as most of the classes are out exploring the city. We would have walking lectures going from sight to sight and learning about the why and how each building was constructed. Overall the academics were good but I didn't find them all that challenging. As for the staff they are amazing and extremely helpful. I found the housing to be adequate but can be smaller than your normal US dorm-style rooms. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the program and got a lot from studying abroad.

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
I would try to connect more with the local community and branch out as much as possible from the other students. Given that it is an all-American university it can be hard to find ways to interact with Parisians and build friendships outside of the program.
Pros
  • Great staff
  • Amazing food
  • University is located in a great part of the city
Cons
  • Only Americans in the program
  • Only got confirmation on which courses I would be taking right before leaving for program

A Once in Lifetime Experience in Paris

Engineering in Paris is an incredible opportunity for undergraduate students around the world to complete several of their engineering requirements while being able to experience an amazingly rich and diverse culture. Academically CEA CAPA provided great teachers who were passionate about their subjects and understanding of the unique circumstances that students were placed in. They taught the course material well, formed connections with us, and encouraged us to explore and travel while we had this opportunity. The CEA CAPA staff were very helpful as we started to gain our bearings in Paris and organized many activities and excursions to immerse us into the culture. Paris itself is an absolutely beautiful city that has a plethora of options for nightlife, food, drink, shopping, museums, historical sites, and natural beauty. The public transportation system in Paris is very accessible and serves as an easy way to travel around the city, however, I encourage walking as much as possible because it is the only way to truly embrace all of the natural beauty and sites of the city. Furthermore, Paris is a very centrally located city in Europe and allows easy and relatively inexpensive travel opportunities to most other countries in Europe.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
During an excursion to Loire Valley, we were offered various local meal options for one of our group dinners. I decided to choose a regional sausage dish as my main entree and it was the most interesting thing I ate during my time in France over the summer. When the sausage was served, I found out that it was actually made from pig intestines and smelled like feet. However, in an attempt to be respectful of the culture, I tried the sausage and was unable to finish the entree, but I am really glad that I was able to try something like this.
Pros
  • Centralized location which made travel to other places easy
  • Great way to meet like minded peers who have similar interests
  • Amazing food, nightlife, and historical sites
Cons
  • Very crowded during the summertime
  • Not the safest city in Europe and will potentially need to navigate unsafe situations
  • Paris can be very expensive
