As one of the world's most densely populated areas, Mexico City has a lively energy and endless amounts of awesome things to do. The main square, or the Zócalo, is the heart of the city and the location of the annual Festival de Mexico.

Because of the large population, Mexico City is filled with places for people to meet up and relax at like the Bosque de Chapultepec Park. This park, named after the grasshoppers that lived in it long ago, is complete with a lake, castle, and even an amusement park!

Mexico City also offers a ton of great museums and markets like the Frieda Khalo Museum and Mercado Sobre Ruedas. Whether you’re interested in art, architecture, or shopping around, Mexico City has plenty of spots that will not disappoint!

  • The National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi, offers many scholarships for studying in Mexico to Spanish-speaking students.

Culture and Immersion

One thing that study abroad students definitely will not want to miss is the Metropolitan Cathedral. Described as more amazing than anything in Spain, France, or Italy, the Metropolitan Cathedral is an architectural gem that took over two years to construct. If you’re interested in ancient ruins, another great place to visit is the Museo del Templo Mayor. This indoor and outdoor museum showcases the partial excavation of the Mexico City’s ancient civilization’s “Great Temple." For a more contemporary museum, visit the Museum of Modern Art, which holds the largest collection of 20th century Mexican art.

For an incredibly unique shopping experience, stroll through the Bazar del Sabado. This historical indoor and outdoor market has a wide variety of artistic and colorful items. Another awesome market that should not be missed is the Mercado Sobre Ruedas. This Tuesday 9am-5pm market is a great place to just about anything including clothing, ceramics, and delicious fresh food. Because the locals are known for having immense amounts of pride in their City, it should be no problem for study abroad students to get a full feel for Mexico City’s vibrant culture!

Affordability

Although it is one of the most expensive cities in Latin America, Mexico City can be very affordable if you travel smart. By using the public transportation systems and eating inexpensive options, students can get away with spending just 100 to 200 pesos ($10-$20) per day. It is highly encouraged that students who wish to save money adventure over towards the street stands to grab a meal. Mexico City’s street stands offer extremely inexpensive food that is both delicious and authentic. Another great way to save money is to visit the many free museums and attractions in the city like the Museo Nacional de Antropología.

Insider Tips

All the thrill seekers must visit La Feria de Chapultepec, Mexico city’s amusement park which is home to the country’s very first roller coaster. The park is open Tuesday through Sunday and offers extremely reasonable prices!

If you’re interested in treating yourself to an amazing breakfast with views to die for, dine at the delicious roof top café El Mayor.

A hidden gem that those who love art must visit is the Joaquin Clausell studio of Mexican impressionist art. At this studio students will see things ranging from sharks to demons to beautiful Mexican landscapes.
