Summer II Granada, Spain

Granada, Spain was so amazing! My Cea Capa group was smaller which gave each of us the opportunity to know each other on a more personal level! Also, one of our excursions (provided by Cea Capa) was to Morocco, Africa! I had so much fun on the excursion, while our group was there, we were able to ride camels, shop in the markets, and eat lunch local families! In addition, Cea Capa planned local events in Granada for us to attend (if we wanted), but the events were spaced out so that we could plan our own events or excursions on the side!

What was your funniest moment?
My funniest moment was the time I accidently bought a baguette at a local pastry shop. I laughed so hard at my miscommunication! Thankfully, my host mom was able to use the bread for one of our meals!
Pros
  • Fun excursions
  • Helpful and reliable Cea Capa team
  • Amazing host families
Cons
  • Office hours changed during the Summer

Granada

Staying with a host family in Spain and studying there was the best experience I've ever had. My host family and I are still close to this day and the home placement was truly amazing they made me feel a part of the family. The location was great and within a good walking distance from my classes and I especially loved that we got to go home and eat lunch with our host families each day. Lunch is a huge part of Spanish culture and I loved the opportunity to meet more of the family and spend that crucial time together. CEA CAPA led guided trips spread out among my studies and I was very grateful for those because it took some stress off planning, scheduling, and trying to tackle transportation in a foreign place all while being a student and trying to learn the language. The Córdoba trip was one of my favorites and allowed me to visit places I wouldn't have otherwise. I was a fan of the lunch and dinner times but I will say definitely bring snacks because the breakfast to lunch gap can be quite hard for Americans, especially with how small breakfast is!

What was your funniest moment?
It was my first day there and I was getting settled into my home... I couldn't figure out how to flush the toilet! Now I've seen some varying toilet designs in my life, but this was different. My host home had two bathrooms and in both the tank was up high on the wall, but in one there was a chain that ran down you'd pull to flush, and in the other- nothing. It was a bit embarrassing at the time when I asked my host mom, but we both laughed and she showed me the hidden way.
Pros
  • Appreciation for the culture
  • The friendships I built
  • The experiences I had
Cons
  • Time difference for calling my family back home
  • Not knowing the language better
  • Pork is a large part of their diet, but I was allergic

CEA CAPA Granada, Spain

My study abroad experience was beyond amazing. I learned so much about myself and grew so much. I had the chance to meet so many people and create wonderful memories. I feel grateful to have had a great support system from CEA CAPA while I was abroad. The city of Granada was also wonderful and the people were so kind. I loved the culture so much and I cannot wait to be back! Living with a host family allowed me to immerse myself in the culture as well. My host family made my experience so much better!

If you did this all over again, what's one thing you would change?
If I could do this all over again, I would go for a year instead of a semester.
Pros
  • I improved my Spanish
  • I met so many people and created amazing friendships
  • I had a great support system with the CEA CAPA staff
Cons
  • It was a bit hard to adjust to having 2 hour long classes
  • Stores were closed on Sunday, which was hard to get used to at first
  • Getting used to the eating schedule was a struggle at first

Granada, Spain

My experience in Granada was incredible. Between my placement with my host family, the time spent at the Universidad de Granada, and the onsite CEA CAPA staff, I could not have had a smoother and more enjoyable time abroad. The city is the perfect size and the people were welcoming. I was blow away by the beauty of the city and how much history there was to experience. The city was extremely walkable, and if you didn't feel like walking, the public transportation was easy to navigate. Overall, I could not recommend any other city more than Granada if you are looking for the perfect study abroad location.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I am not a big fan of seafood, so anything in that realm was unfamiliar to me. I at salmon, shrimp, scallops, and muscles. While I didn't enjoy the food completely, it was fun to try new foods and surprise myself with what I liked and did not like.
Pros
  • On-site CEA CAPA staff
  • Great location

Granada is my new home away from home!

I was incredibly excited to study abroad, but I never could have imagined how amazing my time in Granada would be. My host family was so sweet and I met so many amazing people through my classes and the social scene. I continue to keep in contact with these people even now that I am back in the United States. I took twelve credit hours in the Centro de Lenguas Modernas, part of the Universidad de Granada. The professors were so kind and knowledgeable and I still had time to go out and have fun! I am going back as soon as possible.

What is your advice to future travelers on this program?
Make sure you figure out your support system before you leave. It was really helpful and important to me to know when I could call people back home and when I could expect messages from them! No matter how prepared you are it is always nice to hear a familiar voice.
Pros
  • Travel opportunities
  • Local culture emersion
  • Spanish emersion

The Experience of A Lifetime

I studied abroad for 4 weeks in June 2023 in the Spanish Language and Liberal Arts Program. I was able to earn 6 credits towards my Spanish minor at the University of Granada that seamlessly transferred back to my home university as pass/fail. The classes I took were Spanish Literature (1.5 credit), Latin American Literature (1.5 credit), and High Advanced Spanish Language (3 credit). Classes were a short 10-minute walk from my residencia (dormitory-style living with other CEA CAPA students as well as local Spanish students), and ran from 8:40am-2:30pm Monday-Friday, with a midday break. 3 absences were allowed without penalty, which I used strategically to plan personal travel and/or recover from nights out.

We also had 2 days off for Corpus Christi, which was one of my favorite parts of my stay in Granada. Corpus Christi is a week-long celebration consisting of parades, a fair, and other cultural festivities throughout the city's public spaces. The Spanish students staying in the residencia with us were kind enough to answer all of our questions about the events and make sure we had an amazing time during this unique holiday. CEA CAPA staff also gave us tons of information.

Granada could not have been a better destination. It offers a blend of many cultures (Andalucian, Islamic influences, Romani, and more) due to its unique history, has an extremely laid back culture that made my experience and my course load as relaxed as possible, and so many incredible, friendly people.

Overall, I highly reccommend going abroad to Granada with CEA CAPA. They offer so much support in every step of the process. I went abroad with two friends from my home university, but met so many people who went by themselves and had an amazing experience as well because the nature of the program allows you to make meaningful connections with other students.

Education Abroad in Granda Spain

Granda is a small city which made it feel safe and everything you need is within walking distance. I stayed with a host family which was one of the best decisions I ever made. They truly took me in as family and took care of me when I got a stomach bug in Morocco. I studied at the University of Granada and the professors are very kind, knowledgeable, and approachable. I loved how every professor was very passionate about the courses they taught and I greatly learned a lot. I also made lots of friends in the CEA CAPA program, and I still keep in contact with some of them now. Hopefully I get to visit my host family again sometime soon in the future.
